Third Saturdays New Series: Smart Gardens and Landscapes

Bernheim is offering a new series of hands-on workshops that teach sustainable horticulture
practices. Smart Garden and Landscapes programs are designed to help you transform your yard, urban
space, rooftop and street side into green spaces that are attractive, food-producing and beneficial to
people’s lives and the environment. Let Bernheim show you how to prepare and plan your own spring
garden as you learn about plants, soil, ecology, insects, wildlife and much more.

Composting
Saturday, January 15
Composting is the natural process by which plant material decomposes. Providing your garden
soil with a supply of compost adds organic matter and encourages the growth of beneficial
microbial life in the soil, which is good for plants. You will get a “quick and dirty” overview of the
science of composting and then learn valuable composting benefits and tips, what materials are
best for your compost, different systems that are available to you and general maintenance
practices. You will help construct a compost bin at the Research Center during the second half of
the workshop.

Edible Ornamental Gardens

Saturday, February 19
Growing your own food is fun and rewarding. February is the month to plan your garden, and to
start your seeds for the cool season vegetable plants indoors. You will learn to plan a successful
harvest armed with information on plant and site selection, garden design, preparation, labeling
and the care and maintenance of your beautiful – and fruitful – garden.
Water-Wise Vegetable Gardening
Saturday, March 19
Proper watering technique is an essential gardening skill to learn. It is important to know when
to apply water and how much water to apply. Join this program to learn about watering
frequency and amount, watering techniques and timing, and water conserving catchment
systems (i.e., rain barrels) and practices.

Workshops take place at Bernheim’s Research Center from 10am – noon and are $10.00 for Bernheim
members and $15.00 for non-members. Registration is required; call (502) 955-8512.

The Smart Gardens and Landscapes monthly programs will focus on a different gardening theme each
quarter. Stay updated with your forest echo, Bernheim enews, Facebook and bernheim.org for
information on upcoming opportunities.

Quarterly New Series: Bernheim’s Forest Forays

Bernheim is pleased to announce the formation of an exciting public program series. Forest Forays have
been developed to provide extended opportunities to learn about and experience nature’s glory,
utilizing Bernheim’s Bean Property in the research forest. Forest Forays are a unique opportunity to
visit secluded natural areas with scientists, botanists, geologists and other specialized instructors, a
chance to bring together nature lovers with skilled interpreters and experts, possibly creating new
dialogues and innovative ideas regarding our natural world.

Forest Forays take place at Bernheim’s Bean House, directions and other pertinent information will be
available upon registration. Plan to spend the full day or a half a day in nature. Bring your lunch, good
hiking boots and remember to pack it all out when you head home.

Winter Foray
Saturday, February 5
Winter Plants
10am – noon
Despite the lack of sunshine and warmth, plants have developed adaptations that allow
them to survive through the cold winter months. Join us for this guided hike in the
research forest to learn why winter can be the best time to appreciate trees, how
mosses and lichens thrive in the cold, and how to spot the first signs of spring before
winter has ended. This one and a half hour hike offers something for every plant
enthusiast, from beginners to seasoned botanists.
Winter Raptors
1pm – 3pm
The varieties of habitat at Bernheim attract a diverse array of winter migrants, perhaps
none as inspiring as the raptors. This guided hike leads to an observation spot used to
view eagles and other raptors that make Bernheim their home during the cold months
of winter. Along the way, you will learn about Bernheim’s winter bird “residents” and
why these migrants are attracted to this large forest block.

Forest Forays are $25.00 for Bernheim members and $35.00 for non-members. You may choose to
participate in one or both of the day’s programs. Pre-registration and payment are necessary, call (502)
955-8512 by 4:30pm on the Friday before the program.

Stay tuned to your forest echo, Bernheim enews, Facebook and bernheim.org for information on these
future forays:
Spring: Migratory Birds / Wildflowers
Summer: Moths of Bernheim / The Night Sky
Fall: Seeds and Fruits / The Fossil Record of Bernheim
