EMERGENCY ROOM STUDENT NURSE RESPONSIBILITIES

Triage
• ER nurse is responsible for seeing each of the patients, evaluating them based on the
early, limited feedback she receives and then prioritizing the injuries.
• ER nurse must be able to make quick and effective decisions based on the training she
has received and the knowledge she gains from the patients.

Assist Doctors
• ER nurses are responsible for recording the patients' symptoms so the doctor may review
the patients' documents before he sees them.
• Responsible for checking heart rates, listening for breathing problems and finding out if
the patient is on any medications.
• ER RN is responsible for answering additional questions a patient might have forgotten
to ask when the doctor was present, and they instruct patients about prescriptions and
how often medications should be taken.
• ER RNs are also responsible for assisting with moving patients from the ER to operating
rooms when necessary.

Administrative Duties
• Emergency room nurses may be required enter patient information into a hospital's
computer system, including documenting each patient's treatment and any medications
that were prescribed.
• ER Nurses must be able to switch between administrative and patient duties quickly so
neither physical care nor paperwork become neglected.
Uphold Policies and Procedures
• An ER RN must understand and comply with each of these laws and procedures in order
to keep the ER running smoothly, efficiently and within legal bounds.

Compassionate Care
• Part of the role of a nurse is to help patients remain calm.
• ER nurse is reassuring patients, calling family members and explaining to patients what
they can expect when a doctor arrives.
• ER RN must be able to handle the inherent stress that presents itself when people are in
pain and need assistance and remain compassionate toward all patients.

Skills
• Advanced cardiac monitoring
• Care of emergent and non-emergent patients
• Head-to-toe assessments - knowledge of normal vs. abnormal findings and reporting of
abnormal findings to Charge Nurse, M.D., if warranted
• Phlebotomy skills
• Critical thinking to intervene with appropriate intervention for urgent/emergent care.
Care of the acute and chronically ill patients
• Knowledge of hemodynamics
• Basic IV and central line skills
• Identifying and managing life-sustaining

EMERGENCY ROOM STUDENT NURSE RESPONSIBILITIES

A student nurse in ER will assist nurses on call with whatever task requires completion at the
time.

Health History and Physical Exam

• In ER, a student nurse is responsible in taking a patient's vital signs and personal
information during triage.
• Obtain a health history of his patient to understand the patient's health problems, family
health issues and possible psychological issues.
• Upon completion of the health history, the student nurse must perform a head-to-toe
examination of her patient.

Administer Medication
• The student ER nurse is responsible for administering all ordered medication to his
patient during the day of his clinical rotation.
• Performing skin test is a skill mostly developed in exposure to ER
• Prior to administering the medication, he must research his patient's medications for their
therapeutic uses, dosage limits, proper administration and any factors that would make
administering them inadvisable.
• Once these steps have been completed, the student nurse, must prepare and administer the
medication properly.

Provide Nursing Care


• Be able to learn and provide advance care such as, changing dressings, starting IVs,
drawing blood and caring for catheters if necessary.
• A student nurse learns how to perform certain medical procedures such as the insertion of
an intravenous line by a licensed nursing instructor.
• It is the student nurse's responsibility to care for her patient throughout the day of her
clinical rotation.
