WE LIVE WITH A WAR OF WORDS - Colleen Hedrick

It used to be that when people talked about the "enemy within" that meant foreign spies, double agents, and worst of
all traitors. In more recent times many of us have had to wonder if the "enemy within" might also well apply to
what passes for news from the liberals and the liberal media.
If it's editorial copy, go ahead with our blessings and be lopsided. You're expressing personal views and it is being
expressed as opinion. But if it's supposed to be news, for sweet Pete's sake stick to the facts and all its facets thereof.
Many have lifelong love affairs with words. But make no mistake words can be deceptive and
dangerous weapons. Continually reporters and talk show personalities use word choices to slant news to their own
inclinations. This subterfuge is made more detrimental by information choices and the worst of this slanting may be
through omissions. If there's a bad twist to be put on a headline or an oral clip some of these pundits find it every time.
One of the more flagrant examples is the treatment of the progress toward a new government in Iraq. A better voter
turnout than we get in this long time democracy and a surprisingly high showing by minority voters is no cause for media
or liberal celebratory treatment. Something that is particularly depressing is that liberal spokes persons and the liberal
media so often appear to hunger like a pack of starving wolves for the failure of any and all administration efforts. They
don't want anything to succeed. Granted it is a truism that overall the media thrives first on catastrophe and misfortune.
It's mostly a case that if it wasn't for bad news they would have no news at all.
Politicians contribute their share to this high handed dealing with the news and commentary. Recently Representative
Mike Thompson had considerable space to air his opinions in the Times Standard. Heretofore I had looked upon the
Representative with some approval because I believed he did support some interests on the North Coast although I had
trouble respecting his strictly Democrat position on some matters. This recent newspaper column was a convoluted
and vicious attack on the President. He went so far to the left the graphics people must have had a tough time keeping
that lopsided rhetoric on the page. His approach typified the liberal approach in hoping that there will be only poor results
for the economy, for Afghanistan, for Iraq, for gas, and any other aspect of concern. The Liberal faction appears to be-
lieve that failure will enhance their desperation to regain control. Of course then one must deny they had any contributory
role in the present state of affairs.
Don't you wonder if failure is what they hope for, why the Sam Hill are we paying them to participate?

Chaplain's Message Rita O'Connell

As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, we are aware of the multitude of blessings that we enjoy as Americans. While
we take pride in our accomplishments, let us not forget that our country was established by godly men, and has been
favored by God throughout its history. Let us work as if everything depended upon us and pray as if everything depended
upon God.

While various factions, including atheists and so-called right-wing fundamentalists, clamor for attention, it is well to remind
ourselves of the Thanksgiving message of Abraham Lincoln:

It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged, as with one
heart and one voice, by the whole American people.

Dear Supporter,
I am writing to tell you about a difficult and important decision I have made. Since you have honored me with your support, I
wanted to let you know about it before any public announcement.

I have decided not to run for state treasurer or any other public office in 2006. This decision was not easy. It came only after a
great deal of soul-searching and prayer. It was not a political decision, but a personal one. At this time of my life, as a father of
four young adults, it has become increasingly clear that my active participation is needed in their daily lives. As a result of the
attention they deserve, I would not realistically be able to devote the all encompassing time and energy to another statewide
political campaign during the 2006 election cycle.

This is an exciting and challenging time for California, and I wish that I could be part of the next four years in Sacramento as
state treasurer under the leadership of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. And, please be assured, that to the extent my family
responsibilities allow, I will continue to engage the issues, participate in the debate, support my party and serve our great state.
I hope and expect to be a candidate for public office in the future.

In the meantime there are, of course, many ways to be of service. Cindy and I will continue our extensive charitable and public
policy related activities in the Los Angeles area and throughout California.

Thank you for demonstrating your faith in my candidacy. I am grateful for your support and friendship. And, in that spirit, I plan
to return your financial contribution in full with my deepest thanks in the next several weeks.
Best regards,
Sincerely,
Bill Simon
