LADIES YOU ARE MISSED
At our May meeting we had only 32 in attendance. PLEASE make plans to come to our June luncheon on the
21st. Another great speaker is scheduled and there will also be signup sheets for helping at the fair booths at our
two local fairs this summer. We will have Election of our Nominating Committee for our officers for 2008. A LOT
is happening and we need your attendance.
Our Executive Board has decided for our Club to "go dark" in July and August. That means we will not have our
regular luncheon meetings during those two months. We can all have time to ENJOY THE SUMMER! We
will meet back again on Thursday, September 20th. One week later in September is the National Federated
Republican Women Convention in Palm Springs. Three ladies from our Executive Board have expressed an
interest in wanting to attend this Convention. The Republican Presidential Hopefuls will probably make an appear-
ance . . . so plan to attend our luncheon in October to hear all about that. At this Convention the National Achieve-
ment Awards are presented. Eureka Republican Women, Federated is applying for the Silver Award.
Hope to see many of you this month at our June 21st meeting. Also, look elsewhere in this
bulletin for my Special Report about my amazing trip to Hawaii in May!

June Program by Patricia Welch, 1st Vice President

BONDS, BYPASSES AND CONFUSION HILL
Our speaker this month will be RANDALL IWASAKI. Mr. Iwasaki is the Chief Deputy Director
of the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans).
Mr. Iwasaki manages the day-to-day operations of the Department, including an operating
budget of nearly $10 billion and more than 21,000 employees.
Mr. Iwasaki will address us on Proposition 1B, a California Road Improvement Bond which
was passed by voters last November, the Willits Bypass and the future of Highway
101. Regarding Proposition 1B—this was a bond for state-wide road improvements, including
the rural counties, yet the majority of the funds ended up in Los Angeles and Bay Area
Counties , allegedly to ease their ‗congestion.‘
This is your chance to be personally updated on the long-term plans of CalTrans and to
express your concerns regarding transportation issues in this county. PLEASE COME AND BRING
YOUR FRIENDS, THURSDAY, JUNE 21.

SPECIAL MESSAGE from Joy Finley

Aloha! I just returned from paradise and the best vacation ever! You ask why? It's because I was present at the kick
-off of the Sean Hannity Freedom Tour. Also present was Newt Gingrich and Ollie North. Sean gave an energy
packed speech and not only did
they sign their books, I had
pictures taken with all three of
them. Sean personally
Hannitized me. For a political
junkie like me, this was
thrilling. The money from the tour
goes for the education of children
of the fallen troops in the Iraq war
so it was especially good to hear
Ollie speak of his hero's.
Newt's new book, Pear
Harbor, is currently on New York
Times best seller's list. He gave
an excellent speech and is going
to do an online workshop

September 27th & 29th called American

Solutions. We will be in Palm Springs at that time
for the National Federation of Republican Women
and I intend to take my laptop and I encourage all
of you to go online for this workshop. He is also
proposing that FDR's 6 minute Prayer for America
to be broadcast every June 6th on radio stations
across the nation. I am working on that, too. I
hope to see all of you at the next meeting where
our speaker is from Cal Trans. Remember, when
women work, we win!!!

Chaplain's Message by Rita O'Connell

We, the people, have lost sight of some basic truths. It is vital that we reaffirm them: * Freedom cannot exist
without morality. When morality declines, more government is needed. * Ignorance and freedom cannot coexist.
To govern ourselves, we must be both moral and informed. * Our rights come from God, not from government.
God granted us inalienable rights long before governments were established. * The essence of freedom is the
limitation of government. Because we are imperfect, we need government to secure our God-given rights. * It is
imperative that we work to elect and support honest leaders and that we pray for God's guidance as we do so.

AMERICANISM REPORT by Chris Wennerholm

HOUSING PROBLEM?
LOOK OVER THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FOLLOWING TWO HOUSES AND SEE IF YOU CAN TELL WHICH
BELONGS TO AN ENVIRONMENTALIST.
HOUSE # 1:
A 20-room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms), heated by natural gas. Add on a pool (and a pool house) and
a separate guest house all heated by gas. In ONE MONTH ALONE this mansion consumes more energy
than the average American household in an ENTIRE YEAR. The average bill for electricity and natural gas
runs over $2,400.00 per month. In natural gas alone (which last time we checked was a fossil fuel), this property
consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home. This house is not in a northern or
Midwestern "snow belt," either. It's in the South.
HOUSE # 2:
Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university, this house incorporates every "green"
feature current home construction can provide. The house contains only 4,000 square feet (4 bedrooms) and
is nestled on arid high prairie in the American southwest. A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat
pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground. The water (usually 67 degrees F.)
heats the house in winter and cools it in summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas, and
it consumes 25% of the electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system. Rainwater from the roof is
collected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets
goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The collected water then irrigates the land
surrounding the house. Flowers and shrubs native to the area blend the property into the surrounding rural
landscape.
HOUSE # 1 (20 room energy guzzling mansion) is outside of Nashville, Tennessee. It is the abode of that renowned
environmentalist (and filmmaker), Al Gore.
HOUSE # 2 (model eco-friendly house) is on a ranch near Crawford, Texas. Also known as "the Texas White House,"
it is the private residence of the President of the United States, George W. Bush.

the old joke? How many senators does it take to ‗work on‘ changing a light bulb? One to propose a bipartisan
commission. One to threaten to de-fund the light bulbs. One to demand the impeachment of Bush and Cheney for
keeping us all in the dark. One to vote to pull out the first of the light bulbs by fall of this year with a view to getting them

Education Update by Sheryl Fearrien
( a bit more personal this month)
As we wind down and go "black" for July and August, some of us are getting ready to be energized for the
summer! As a teacher, I will be participating in some special training to hone my skills to better help my students.
Under Senate Bill 472 (enacted 8-28-06). I and other teachers from Mattole Valley Charter School will retrain in math
or language arts. (Yes, the legislature actually does pass some meaningful legislation occasionally!) I've chosen a math
course, specifically algebra, to be held in August. Backing up to July, I will be taking a two-week Montessori course in
math, language arts, and social studies. I had always heard that Montessori was "touchy-feelie", maybe so, but a
conservative teacher friend of mine took the training last summer and reports that it has really helped her reach kids who
learn in different ways. That's the key!
Not all students are gifted in the same way. If it can add more to my "bag of tricks", so much the better! Then in
September, I'll start a year-long course, Teaching American History, or TAH for short. Two of our teachers took the
course this year and report that it is really worth-while. The instructors often don't agree with each other so many
opinions are voiced. We will see! The shrinking violet, that I'm NOT, won't stay quiet if I hear something from recent
history being portrayed the way I KNOW it didn't happen!
My students all know, that while they are working on a few refresher activities I've assigned for summer, their teacher
will be working on her own refresher activities as well!

No Matter How You Slice Baloney—It’s Still Baloney By Colleen Hedrick

New York Times‘ reporter, Jim Rutenberg, opined about immigration, ―Conservative opponents can use one word,
amnesty, against the bill. Supporters, the president included, are forced into the complex weeds of policy and the
nuances of legislative language.‖
Nuances and complexities my right foot. The conservative base knows when it is getting a bunch of foolishness
shoved down its collective throat. Our administrative and legislative bodies, both past and present have failed to enforce
the laws they have already passed that promised to protect our borders, control the ever increasing flood of illegal
immigrants, and defend our citizenry against those with ill intent.
The liberal media, the administration, and most of congress are convinced we are too blamed dumb to know when we
are being lied to big time and jerked around. Pushing these policies makes them pathetic copy cats for Humpty Dumpty--
there just won't be a way to put it together again.
We don‘t think bargain lettuce, cheaper tomatoes, and bigger profits for some businesses are worth greater public
expenses for schools, numerous welfare programs, police forces, overloaded medical care, and social security plus
medicare for illegals. That whole irrational structure is a house of flimsy cards certain to collapse in the gusting winds of
ever increasing demands on our public resources.
The current dialogue is certain to be bringing an ever increasing influx of illegals across our borders with the promise
of citizenship if they are in this country. The premise that after a given period of time the illegal immigrant will return to
their home to wait a set period of time, pay a fee, and learn English to attain citizenship is mushy pie ala mode in the sky
since the elected officials have not ever been capable of enforcing the laws and requirements they have voted into effect
in the past. The truth about this biggest game in Washington is ―which party will buy the most votes by making the il-
legals citizens?‖
All this grandiose out pouring of benefits doesn‘t even buy us the good will and respect of the current and would be
recipients. Montebello High School students fly the Mexican flag above an upside down United States flag, Thousands
demonstrate their contempt in our streets because for all our give away programs it‘s still just not good enough. And a
young woman from the state of Tennessee competing for Miss Universe in the pageant held in Mexico City (she finished
in the top five) was roundly booed just because she is a United State ‘s citizen. Does that sound like a bargain to you?
They can shmooze us through breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a nightcap---the conservative base still knows this is as
dumb as it gets.

Red Fridays — Wear Red Every Friday

The first thing that a soldier says when asked what we can do to make things better for him or her is, "We need your
support and your prayers." There is a campaign sweeping across America called "Red Fridays". The goal of this
campaign is to have as many people as possible wear something red on every Friday until all of our troops come
home. Please pass this information along to your relatives, coworkers, friends, and anyone who will listen. This
campaign is an excellent vehicle to show our solidarity and our unceasing support and admiration for our troops.
I know I mentioned this before but it is still important.

Some Perspective on Global Priorities by Bill Leonard

Going to the Memorial Day benefit for the fight against Hepatitis-B raised my awareness of the huge worldwide
threats to public health that are out there. It reminded me of an article I read in the April 22 World magazine about
Danish academic Bjorn Lomborg. Lomborg founded a group called the Copenhagen Consensus, which identifies the
world‘s toughest problems and analyzes them from the perspective of economics in order to find ways to help the most
people with the least economic harm. Not surprisingly, opportunities to counter climate change ranked dead last. Under
their analysis, the Kyoto Protocol would cost the U.S. $160 billion a year for very little measurable benefit. In contrast,
the Copenhagen group cites UNICEF‘s estimate that $70-$80 billion a year could give the entire undeveloped world
access to clean water, education and basic sanitation. The group lists four opportunities to help millions of people with
solutions that are attainable and cost effective. These
are: Control of HIV/AIDS, providing micronutrients to the Treasurer’s Report by Cindy Lewis
