Year 1B Class Bulletin
Term 3 January 2011

Dear Parents and Carers,

Happy New Year! It is lovely to see the children back at school after the Christmas holidays. We
are settling into our new and spacious classroom and children are adapting well to the more
structured timetable with their wonderful enthusiasm for learning.
Our topic this term is ‘Brrr! It’s cold outside.’ We will be learning about animals that live in the
Arctic and Antarctic. We will also be thinking about freezing and melting as well as touching on the
changes that our planet is going through and how this is affecting creatures that live in these cold
places.
If children have any books or resources related to our topic that they would like to bring in to
show the class they are welcome to.

Topics this term Important Notes:

Literacy – Homework – This will now be sent home

Our new Literacy Unit is ‘Stories in a Fantasy
setting’. We will look at a range of fantasy stories,
focusing particularly on ‘Harry and the Snow King’,
‘The Snowman’ and ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’. We will
be discussing the language, characters and plot of
these stories as well as exploring them through
drama and using them as a doorway into our topic.
Our final product will be a class book of fantasy
stories. We will also be producing pieces of work
during writing week based on the ice-skating scene
by Hendrick Avercamp.
Numeracy –
This term we will be continuing with the new
‘Maths Makes Sense’ scheme. Each week we will be
covering different strands of the maths
curriculum and building upon the new knowledge
learnt in a slow and gradual way. We will also be
having creative maths afternoons on Fridays
where children will undertake weekly maths
investigations.
RE – This term we will be focusing on ‘Prayer’. We
will be thinking about why people pray and the
different types of Christian prayer. We will also
learn a famous Christian prayer and write prayers
of our own to say at the end of each day.

Monday.

Spellings- These will continue to be set
on Fridays and tested the following
Friday. The children are still tested in
their phonics groups which are slightly
different this term.

Reading Books- I would like to
emphasise the importance of children
bringing their book bags with reading
books and reading records to school
everyday as Mrs Bhagwan will continue to
change books on Mondays and Thursdays.
Also this New Year means that as well as
guided reading groups on a daily basis all
children will be read with individually at
least twice more on a weekly basis.
Please ensure your child has their book
bag every day so we can read with them

Trips- The children have the
opportunity to go ice skating as part of a
whole school trip on Friday 21st January.
This will linked to the work we will be
doing in writing week (the following
week).
 Topics this term (continued):
PSHCE – This term’s SEAL topic is ‘Going for
Goals!’ We will be thinking about how we learn
and how we can achieve our goals by overcoming
obstacles. We will be thinking about setting
ourselves some important goals in our learning
and relating these to our targets.
ICT
Our unit is ‘Finding Things Out’ where we will
explore web pages to find out information for
our ‘Brrrr’ topic. All the internet sites we will be
using will be predetermined and safe.
Topic-
Brrr! It’s Cold Outside’
During this topic we will be looking at the Arctic
and Antarctic and learning about animals and
habitats. We will learn about how animals adapt
for survival in their harsh environments. We will
be doing experiments to do with temperature
and melting and freezing. We will also be
thinking about winter sports and how our climate
is changing. So even though it is inconvenient we
are hoping for some more wintry weather this
term to assist in our creative learning journey!
Important Notes (continued):
Trips (continued): We will also be
going on another trip to the National
Gallery on the 1st February. The
children will be undertaking a tour in
which they will investigate paintings all
to do with Hot and Cold. Please let me
know if you would like to come along
and help on either of these trips.
Indoor PE will be on Tuesday
afternoons as in Term 1.
Outdoor PE is now first thing on
Monday mornings. I would like
children to come to school in their
outdoor PE kits with their school
uniform in a PE bag ready to change
into afterwards. This will allow us to
make the most of our PE time.
