Invites students in grades 6 - 12
to participate in the fifth annual
Nancy Carnegie Merrill History Award
in honor of our esteemed citizen & town historian, Nancy Carnegie Merrill
2011 Theme: Exeter at the Time of the Civil War
Explore an aspect of life in Exeter at the time of the Civil War, such as life on the homefront,
family life, politics, industry, transportation, education, recreation, military life, or fashion, etc.

A $100 prize will be awarded in each division.


Middle School Division (grades 6 - 8)
High School Division (grades 9 - 12)
Winners will present their papers at Youth Night on Thursday, April 21, 2011.
Entries will be judged on the following criteria:
Traditional three-part Research Paper format
1000 words maximum
Clearly stated thesis statement
Historical Accuracy - It must be grounded in a historical context
(Students must use a minimum of 3 sources & are encouraged to use primary sources.)
Originality, Style, Spelling and Grammar
Citations Required

Submission Deadline: Tuesday, March 22, 2011

(title only on each page with your name and title on the provided cover sheet - do not put your name on the manuscript itself)
to Ms. Caroline Siecke or Mr. Neal Matthews (at the Cooperative Middle School), Ms. Molly Stevenson
(at Exeter High School), or to the Exeter Historical Society. PO Box 924, 47 Front Street, Exeter
Research at the Exeter Historical Society is strongly encouraged.
The staff is available during open hours* to direct students toward appropriate resources.
Judges’ copies will be numbered and submitted without student’s name.
Submissions will be read by one panel of three judges each:
1 local teacher, 1 member of the Exeter Historical Society Board of Trustees, 1 citizen
