Pearl Harbor and the Twin Towers

Some Similarities and the Differences, and Some Consequences
John H. Grobey will be speaking at our February 17th meeting on
the topic of Pearl Harbor and the Twin Towers: Some Similari-
ties and the Differences, and Some Consequences. A Military
Honor Guard will parade and post the colors. John is a retired
economics and forestry professor who taught at HSU and the
University of Washington. He also has had an extensive naval
career. He retired from the Navy in 1972 with the rank of Lieuten-
ant Commander. Currently, he serves as Post Adjutant for Post
2542 in Arcata, the Mad River Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars and a
number of other military associations.
He entered graduate school at the University of Washington in
1961 where he earned two Master's degrees and a PH. D. He
taught at the University of Washington one year as a Research
Instructor before being hired by HSU as an Assistant Professor of
Economics. He eventually rose to the rank of Full Professor and
was the Chairman of the Department of Economics for ten years.
He was at HSU for 34 years.
His naval career began when he received a scholarship at the
University of Washington as a U.S. Navy Midshipman, where he
took courses similar to those
taught at the U.S. Naval
Academy. He served aboard

In his Farewell Address in 1837,
President Andrew Jackson stated:

President’s Message
Boom! The Health Care Bill Illegal, Who Knew? WE DID!!
Federal Judge Roger Vinson, a Reagan appointee serving in Pensacola, Florida,
ruled that key components of the law signed by President Barack Obama in
March, are unconstitutional and that the entire law "must be declared void."
Judge Roger Vinson found the entire law unconstitutional, after declaring that its
key element -- the health insurance mandate -- was a law Congress did not have
the power to enact. Opponents of the law claimed that while the government
can regulate the activities of people engaged in commerce, like the insurance
industry, it cannot regulate someone's inactivity -- that is, someone's refusal to
buy insurance. It's an argument the judge found persuasive. Because the
individual mandate is unconstitutional and not severable, the entire Act must be
declared “void.” The injunction is in place and yet the President moves forward.
The Administration can be held in contempt of court! When does the rule of law
and the Constitution get recognized by Obama and Congress? If our Republi-
cans would follow both, they would look to Printz v. United States (95-1478), 521
U.S. 898 (1997). This 1997 victory states Justice Scalia’s opinion:

forward by Federal District Judge John Roll of Arizona, who was murdered four
weeks ago in Tucson.
What does the Government fear? Patriots who educate their neighbors!

Legislative Report
The U.S. Supreme Court will be taking up key California budget cases.
These cases will decide if the State can cut what it currently pays to doctors,
hospitals and pharmacies under the Medi-Cal program for the poor.
Governor Brown has been very vocal about all of the cuts he plans to make,
but his proposal to cut 10 per cent paid to health providers has hit a
roadblock. His claim is that nearly $719 billion can be saved by these cuts.
But, the providers have sued in federal court and won rulings that have
prohibited the cutbacks on the grounds that they conflict with the
Medicaid law. With these court decisions, lawyers for then Atty. Gen. Jerry
Brown appealed to the Supreme Court, arguing these private parties had
no right to sue the state and no right to a particular reimbursement
payment.
The high court has agreed to hear three separate appeals from the state, all
of which raise the same issue. The Obama administration filed a brief that
urged the justices to steer clear of California’s appeals, but despite the
advice, the justices voted to hear the cases. It seems the high court has
little respect for the wishes of the US President, as do a majority of the
citizens.
My read on this complicated issue is: if Medi-Cal payments did not include
so many illegal immigrants and only serviced truly poor Americans, the
budget savings would probably be much more than $719 billion.
 Education Report: On Ronald Reagan
Incredible as it sounds, February
6th will mark the one hundred
year anniversary of President
Ronald Wilson Reagan’s birth. For
those fortunate among us to have
been young parents during his
administration, there was a calm-
ness and assurance that, with this
man in the White House, our fami-
lies were safer. Before long, the rest
of the world who yearned to live in
freedom knew that President
Reagan was their champion as well.
So… just how did all this happen?
It came in gradual, steady steps. As
the young son of Irish-American
parents, Reagan considered himself
to be a liberal, FDR Democrat. As a
young actor in Hollywood, he
witnessed firsthand the communist-
leaning agitators striving to
infiltrate the studios, establish a
foothold in mass media, and domi-
nate the message that Americans
would “learn” through our movies.
This movement wasn’t recognized
by everybody. And much of the Left
didn’t see it as a problem. That was
a wake-up call for Reagan.
By the time Reagan was inaugu-
rated California’s governor on
January 5, 1967, his appreciation of
freedom’s value was firmly estab-
lished. On that day he stated, “…We
are participating in the orderly
transfer of administrative authority
by the direction of the people. And
this is the simple magic which makes
a commonplace routine a near
miracle to many of the world’s inhab-
itants: the continuing fact that the
people, by democratic process, can
delegate this power, yet retain
custody of it. Perhaps you and I have
lived with this miracle too long to be
properly appreciative. Freedom is a
fragile thing and is never more than
one generation away from extinction.
It is not ours by inheritance; it must be
fought for and defended constantly
by each generation, for it comes only
once to a people. Those who have
known freedom and lost it have never
known it again.…”
Reagan saw the same earlier methodol-
ogy used in Hollywood studios being
applied on college campuses during
the Vietnam War era. Young idealistic
students were encouraged and
manipulated by communist-leaning
agitators. The communist threat had
been in place since the revolution in
Russia and would endure for most of
the 20th century.
Reagan entered the office of President
with a belief that communism was truly
evil. In his first inauguration he stated:
“…We will again be the exemplar of
freedom and a beacon for those who do
not now have freedom. To those neigh-
bors and allies who share our freedom, we
will strengthen our historic ties and assure
them of our support and firm commit-
ment…. As for the enemies of freedom,
those who are potential adversaries, they
will be reminded that peace is the highest
aspiration of the American people. We
will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it; we will
not surrender for it---now or ever.”
After surviving the March 30, 1981
assassination attempt, this belief
became crystal clear. Reagan shared
what he had discerned with son
Michael, his new pastor of National
Presbyterian Church, Louis Evans,
Mother Teresa, Pope John Paul II, and
New York Cardinal Terrace Cooke. On
Good Friday, less than three weeks
after being injured, Reagan shared with
the cardinal that he sensed his survival
was a rebirth. He was convinced God
had spared his life for a special
purpose. That purpose was to defeat
communism, an evil that had hung
over the world for decades. “The hand
of God was upon you,” the cardinal told
the President. Reagan answered
solemnly, “I know, I have decided that
whatever time I have left is for him.” A
humbled Reagan and the “team” God
had apparently chosen would work
together around the world to end the
Cold War struggle, “the epic battle
against militant, murderous commu-
nism.” Marx had branded religion "the
opiate of the masses”. Lenin had labeled
it " a necrophilia.”
During Reagan’s presidency, much of
the media second-guessed and
criticized him over what proved to be
the right choices. People who actually
lived under communism and remem-
ber President Reagan, came to know he
said what he meant, and he meant
what he said. Ross R. Rossin was a
16-year old, living in Bulgaria in 1981.
All Rossin heard from Bulgarian media
was that Reagan was “a bad capitalist
leader." Now an American citizen,
Rossin recently completed a large,
commissioned portrait of Reagan for
the 100th anniversary of his birth. A
photograph on the front of a 2010
calendar hanging in his haircutter's
shop was the inspiration he had been
trying to find. The photograph “started
talking to me. I made a connection. I
saw the drama behind the eyes.” The
portrait, his latest, hangs in Rossin’s
studio near his other portraits of Teddy
Roosevelt, Nelson Mandela, Abraham
Lincoln, George Washington, and
Yitzhak Rabin. Rossin said, “I believe
they are here in spirit in this room right
now. I know a painting is ready when I
sense that presence.” He learned about
Reagan as he painted his portrait.
Rossin says, “To someone like me, who
grew up in a country that was once
communist, he’s the last of the Mohicans.
The last crusader.”
My information came from reading multiple books on
Reagan, from his inauguration speeches and, most
recently, from articles in Newsmax, (magazine),
February, 2011, including , “Faith That God Had Given
Him Time to Complete His Mission” and “Artist Draws on
‘Connection’ to President Reagan."

positive decision to join Humboldt Republican Women and
since then I’ve been able to meet and have lunch with this lively
group of conservative women and associates, listen to an inter-
esting and educational program, receive a monthly newsletter
(The Redwood Alert), and be able to access all sorts of pertinent
information on the web from HRWF’s very own website!
We are approximately a third through our annual membership
drive and to date we are ahead of last year for renewing members.
If you haven’t already done so, please send in your the annual

Egypt, Should We Be Concerned?
Could Egypt be another Iran in the making? Egypt is
the largest country in the Middle East with the most
educated population in the region. What we have seen
on TV for nearly two weeks is a mixture of protestors.
They are young, old and middle aged, mothers, fathers,
sons and daughters. One young man when he was
interviewed cited his lack of a job after receiving his
degree. Hmm, seems we face the same problem here.
Egypt’s economic situation has been a struggle for the
last ten years although in the last year or so they have
seen some improvement.
President Mubarak has been at the helm of Egypt for
over thirty years and though he is no saint, he has been
a friend to the United States and Israel. Mubarak has
given Israel security during his tenure and he has also
received much financial assistance from us. Even with
the tens of billions of dollars in assistance, he has
refused to adopt any type of reform.
So now it appears we are taking the track to an “orderly
transition” to a responsive government as Secretary of
State Clinton stated on Sunday. But how and where will
this lead? The Muslim Brotherhood seems poised to
take over as they are the largest organized group in

Egypt. What would that mean for Israel? The Brother-
hood has advocated the end of Israel.
If Egypt falls to the radicals, it will have a wider effect in
this very fragile area. Remember, Egypt controls the
Suez Canal, they also have been taking the lead role in
stabilizing the tensions between the Palestinian
factions and have stifled the smuggling to the Hamas
militants in the Gaza Strip. The fall of this nation would
also embolden our enemies around the world.
“We are calling for a real democracy, but not a democ-
racy for six months or a year and then evolving into
essentially a military dictatorship or a so-called democ-
racy that then leads to what we saw in Iran,” Clinton
stated over the weekend. That possibility frightens me.
To answer the question: Yes, we should be concerned.
