Title Auditory P3 modulation by visual emotional stimuli: effect of temporal context and task relevance

Text The auditory P3 component has been shown to be modulated by the presence of secondary cognitive
tasks (Isreal et al., 1989). This has lent support to an atencional bias model of P3 modulation,
according to which the amplitude of the component depends on the amount of resources available to
the subject. This effect has been studied on the context of the emotional modulation of the ERP. In
spite of results supporting the atencional shift model, illustrating that the presence of secondary visual
tasks decreases the amplitude of the P3, especially for arousing affective stimuli (Cuthbert et al.,
1998; Schupp et al., 1997; Barbosa, Almeida, Santos & Marques-Teixeira, 2008), some contradictory
results have been found (Dominguez-Borras et al., 2008).
31 male subjects performed an auditory oddball task while ERP were recorded at 32 sites. Auditory
tones were presented at either 150, 450 or 850 ms post image onset. Subjects were instructed to
either focus on the auditory oddball task or the visual stimuli (task relevance). Auditory P3 amplitude
analysis shows a clear effect of modulation by the visual task. In addition, it is shown that the effect of
emotional modulation on the auditory ERP is different according to the time point at which the tone is
delivered. These results stress the importance of controlling the processing stage of the visual stimuli
when studying the interference of the emotional context on atencional allocation processes, as
indexed by the P3.
