LEARNING OUTCOMES
This assignment requires you to draw on several areas of study within the Module. You
are expected to demonstrate and will be evaluated on the following outcomes.
1. The knowledge and understanding of well established concepts and principles
of organisational policy and design and their development in contemporary
management practice.
2. Coherent lines of argument and suggest informed solutions to organisational
dilemmas.
3. Effective written information and arguments.

A. THE REQUIREMENTS
A written essay of approximately 2,000 words that evaluates management issues selected
from the topics in the next page.

The assignment must adhere to standard academic documentation standards. (Failure to


do so will result in loss of marks in the Format, Citations and References criterion.)
 You are to write the citations and references following the Harvard System.
 You are required to use Times New Roman as the font type and 12 pts as the
font size.
 Vertical/line spacing is to be 2.0 (double-line) spacing.
 You are required to provide page numbers to your pages.
 You must use enough of your own words to convince that you understand what
you are writing. Evidence of originality in your writing reflected by effort of
paraphrasing and use of own personal expression in your individual analysis
and evaluation. You should not submit a “copy and paste” work as you may
only be awarded at most a PASS even though proper citations and referencing
are given.
 You may include diagrams, figures, tables etc. without word penalty. If you are
to present information in table format, ensure the information is presented
briefly. You are not to write paragraphed information in the table in order to
avoid word count.
 You must ensure that your writing is clear and concise as quantity does not
always guarantee quality. Therefore, you should not expect by writing more
will enable you to get a high mark unless the information is presented with
clarity and it is relevant with high degree of analysis and evaluation shown.
 A sliding scale of penalties for excess length will be imposed according to the
amount by which the limit has been exceeded. Your word count must be
indicated on your cover page.

2,001 – 2,300 words 10% penalty
2,301 – 2,600 words 20% penalty
2,601 and above Marks will be capped at a pass
e.g. 50 marks

B. QUESTIONS

Choose ONE (1) of the following question and write approximately 2,000 words
answer. You are to attach a softcopy of your answer in CD format together with your
written assignment when making your submission at the designated date.

Question 1: Organisational Structure

Using at least TWO (2) credible and external source (e.g. professional organisation,
textbook, journal articles, etc.), define organisational structure.

With reference to TWO (2) different types of organisation with which you familiar
(e.g. manufacturing/ governmental/ NGO/ service), discuss how organisational
structure have impacted the: strategy, process, product development and service
delivery.

Question 2: Organisational Culture

Culture need to change in order for them to be rewarding.


Critically evaluate the statement above.

With reference to TWO (2) different organisational culture (e.g. an American and a
Japanese company), critically assess how the organisation culture change in order for
them to be successful in the host market. The areas that you required (but not
exclusive) to consider are the organisational:
i. goals,
ii. strategies,
iii. structures, and
iv. practices.

Cover Page
The assignment cover page should contain information as stated below in order:

• Lecturer’s Name
• Work Count

Table of contents
The table of contents should follow the title page. It must list the Roman numeral
sections and the page on which each section starts. The table of contents may be one or
more pages long. The table of contents page(s) will not be numbered.

Body of the written entry


The body of the written entry begins with Introduction and continues in the sequence
outlined above. The first page of the body is numbered 1 and all following pages are
numbered in sequence. The numbered pages continue through references.

References
All the references used in the assignment should be given in this page and must be in
Harvard Name Referencing format.

Appendix
An appendix is optional. Include in the appendix any exhibit appropriate to the written
entry but not important enough to include in the body; these might include sample
questionnaires used, newspaper articles, general background data, etc.

You will be assessed at 100% for this Assignment and the marks will be weighted
at 30% for the overall marks for this module.

F. ASSIGNMENT ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The criteria below detail the areas, which will be taken into account when the
assignment is marked. Each piece of assessed work will be awarded a percentage
between 0 and 100%. The grades awarded will be marked according to the
following criteria:

75 and above This would be equivalent to a Distinction and would represent


outstanding performance. The work should show a thorough
understanding of the issue together with a high degree of analysis and
critical evaluation.

65% – 74% This will be equivalent to a Credit. This would represent extremely
good work demonstrating an in depth understanding of material and
sound analysis and conclusions.

50 – 64% This would be equivalent to a Pass. Work in this category should


demonstrate good application of the main principles to the question set
and provide a well-balanced view.

0% – 49% This would represent a failure to pass demonstrating a poor command


of the knowledge of subject area combined with an inability to interpret
the question.

Please pay particular attention to the following:


• Ensure that the contents page precisely reflects the whole content of the report
including the appendices.
• Page numbering: Ensure that the contents page accurately reflects the position of
the contents. Page numbers prior to the ‘introduction’ should be roman
numerals. From the introduction onwards page numbering should be Arabic.
• References should be consistently listed according to the Harvard convention with
the authors listed in alphabetical order.
• Authors should be accurately referenced within the report according to the Harvard
convention.
