Richard Fields is Development Officer for Pacific Legal Foundation of Sacramento, CA. He is responsible for

women are candidates

HRWF is in the fortunate and proud position of having two
members standing for election in the June 8 Primary. They are
Johanna Rodoni, candidate for Humboldt County Assessor;
and Karen Brooks, campaigning to unseat Wesley Chesbro
for the California State Assembly. Each of our outstanding
members/candidates personify HRWF‟s goals for
conservative government with the goal of best
serving their constituents.
Johanna Rodoni, a native Californian, has been a Humboldt
County resident since 1971 and a full-time rancher since
1981. She earned her credentials for the assessor through
consistent strong concerns with local and state government,
her background in business, community service in the arenas
of wild life and natural resources, and extensive service on the
county‟s General Plan. The judgment of the Humboldt
County Grand Jury listed extensive changes needed in the
assessor‟s office; Johanna is the woman for the job.
Karen Brooks describes herself as “a citizen candidate for
the assembly seat currently occupied by Wesley Chesbro.“
She became a candidate because of increasing concerns with
the ever-increasing problems in people‟s lives created by self
-serving politicians, overspending, and ever-expanding
burdens created by government. Her 28 years in private sector
business management and marketing, plus a long history of
public service, equip her well to analyze California‟s ever-
growing debt and loss of businesses and to work on solutions
to start our state and county on the road to less invasive
government and far better days. Karen is also actively
concerned with the state„s drastic failure to best serve
families, poor handling of the problems of the disabled, and
working for positive solutions,
Her election would be a referendum on the unfortunate”
musical chairs” practices of many of our state‟s elected
officials who figuratively spit in the face of the people‟s
affirmative vote for term limits. It is a woefully repeated
practice to serve a tem in the assembly, go from that to a term
in the senate, then back to the assembly. As this is repeated, it
becomes increasingly difficult for a candidate from either
party to compete successfully for the elected offices because
of the avalanche of advantages of the deeply entrenched
incumbents.
It‟s a shabby practice and it‟s well past time to call a halt on
all participants. Good citizens like Johanna and Karen are
first-rate examples of powerful antidotes for the ills that have
beset us for too long. Please serve yourself, your county and
state with your vote and help get out supporting votes. Then,
after the Primary, let‟s go all out with campaign support and
fundraisers on our collective way to the ballot box on
November 2. When Women Work, We Win.

The Primary ballot box awaits us on June 8. Among the
propositions is number 14 and that one calls loudly for our NO
votes. Enough of those NO votes will avoid one of the more
dangerous legislative issues to be offered in recent times. Prop
14 would abolish candidates being identified by their party
affiliation. Write-in candidates are not allowed in general
elections. In many parts of California, Democrats may not vote
for Democrats and Republicans won‟t be allowed to vote for
Republicans. Those favoring the bill would have us believe that
this will end partisan politics. But Proposition 14 is a backroom
product brewed up to pass a budget that‟s written in red ink and
adds up to billions. California Nurses, Firefighters, and
Teachers are joining with Howard Jarvis Taxpayers‟
Association to oppose this Sneaky Pete deal. Something that
gets those organizations falling in line with us conservatives is
worthy of toasts (and we‟re not talking rye bread on this deal.)
Big time major bucks are being spent by insurance companies,
banks, and developers to deceive us into voting for it so there‟s
another good reason to say, “There‟s my NO vote in your face,
Buster.“
There‟s a hot reason to call, email, fax, and write senators and
representatives , or maybe send a photo of yourself in a t-shirt
with an appropriate message. The thing is that Congress is so
married to Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae that the prenuptial
must have been written with enough strings that the
Congressional Mafia is scared as all hell about what will
unravel if any of the outside layers get removed. If the public
got a halfway decent look at the real reasons for these two
houses of cards not only avoiding the exams and brutal critiques
given to other lenders, but being granted absolute open funding
with no end markers designated, they would be outraged. These
institutions were the biggest offenders on irresponsible lending
(„everyone deserves a house, even if they don„t have a job‟.)
Both President Bush and Senator McCain urged change on
several occasions and warned that collapse of the housing
bubble was imminent. That didn‟t change a thing and it didn‟t
bring any effort for restitution of the millions stolen by one of
the lending giant‟s crooked top dogs. Their grasp on sound
lending practices was further demonstrated by megabuck
donations to Democratic candidates. Senator Obama (at that
time) was the third most blessed recipient of their generosity
with taxpayers‟ dollars. These financial jokesters also proved
their love of Senators Chris Dodd and Chuck Schumer and
Representative Frank with generous campaign contributions.
Can you manufacture a reason that a government-funded entity
should make campaign contributions? Not one of those
campaign dollars has been returned.
Dodd got such sweetheart financing on two property loans that
he was finally done in on his parasite deals with our money.
Even his extremely liberal state decided „enough is enough‟.
For the first time in his adult life, Dodd will not be feeding at
the public trough. If that sounds like gloating, let‟s grant that
there is some of that present but, more importantly, at least one
of those most responsible for the country‟s economic collapse
will be gone after November. For now, none of the guilty has
been held responsible, and all of them are still being paid.
President Bush gets blamed, of course. And just to light the
brandy‟s blue flame on their Cherries Jubilee, Freddie Mac and
Fannie Mae‟s six-figure board members still have blank checks
on our dime. That should blaze the trail to the ballot box. Stay

Letter to editor/flyer
Dear Editor,
Recent mailings of misleading flyers to Republican voters is something of a puzzler. Three local candidates paid to present
themselves on advertising that claimed to be an advisory to Republicans on whom and what to support. Many of the recipients
believed these false tracts offered information sent by local Republican organizations (Humboldt County Republican Central
Committee and the Humboldt
Republican Women, Federated.) These voters were, for the most part, dumbfounded as to why their organizations would be
advocating for Democrats Bonnie Neely, Paul Gallegos, and Patrick Cleary.
Those running for office do often overreach in strange ways, but if it‟s so great to be a Democrat and so worthwhile to vote for
a Democratic candidate, why oh why would you present yourself as a Republican?
Many Republicans believed for more than two decades that Bonnie Neely was confused because we saw her functioning as a
RINO (Republican In Name Only.) Her recent change to Democrat was heartwarming. We thought, “ That‟s great. Now she
knows who she really is.” But she‟s confused again and pays to be a Republican at certain times. That needs checking out.
It‟s plenty timely to review those many years in office since suddenly she‟s promising jobs after opposing most job
opportunities for Humboldters in her past 24 years as Supervisor. If these candidates aren‟t sure which party they represent,
how much sense does it make for them to ask to represent the citizens of Humboldt County?

publication dates or for those that do not accept notices or letters of a political nature. Within the
situation, our best effort was made to inform our memberships and the community of Humboldt.
We urge you to do your best to advance your candidates’ campaigns. Be sure you get your turn
at depositing a proud heritage---your ballot.

False Advice Sent To Registered Republicans
Mailings have been sent to many registered Republicans by an organization that self identifies as a California Voters Guide.
The fliers claim to be an advisory to tell Republican voters how to vote. With one exception, Loren Hanks, a candidate for the
First Congressional District, the Republican Party of Humboldt County and Humboldt Republican Women Federated (HRWF)
have not advocated for the candidates presented on the flyers.
The candidates paid advertising costs to be presented on the flyers. It appears feasible that those distributing this primarily false
information published the flyers as a profit-making venture since whichever candidate bought first was presented as the
choices of HRWF and Humboldt County‟s Central Committee for the Republican Party.
Colleen Hedrick, President of HRWF and a member of the Central Committee, said, “These appear to be, in part, simply for-
the-buck publications. However, if similar flyers targeted registered Democrats, we have not had any reports on that happening.
The flyers do not represent advice by our organizations to our county‟s registered voters.”

presented by the Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District. We are presenting three Water Resource Planning sessions this
month: McKinleyville - June 1, Arcata - June 3, and Eureka - June 15. It is an opportunity for the community (you) to
become informed about water rates and why they are increasing and to voice an opinion on uses for our abundant water
supply. These are the last of the public input sessions.
The Eureka meeting will be held at the Warfinger Building, June 15, at 6:00 P.M. It would be great to have a number of
Republican ladies and associates in attendance to share their thoughts about FLOW.

As the 2009-2010 school year ends, I reflect on the changes that have hap-
pened in such a short time. Nationally, we are clearly on course for disas-
ter. Our hope is that more eyes are finally open and the House and Senate
will be cleansed, as well as the State Assembly and Senate. As bad as a
continuation of Obama horrors are for us, our children‟s and grandchil-
dren‟s futures are even sadder. Take heart! WE can turn this around. Do
EVERYTHING you can to get our superb, citizen candidates elected. Join
my family on Monday, JUNE 7 @ 6PM at the Fortuna Veterans Hall for a
benefit barbeque for KAREN BROOKS for ASSEMBLY! Only $30 per
family or $20 per person! We have had more than enough of Chesbro and
it is time for him to sail off into the sunset, preferably to China, Vene-
zuela, Cuba, or some other liberal nirvana.

diligently to earn money for our first-ever high school scholarship fund.
My committee has some fantastic women on board, including our ener-
gizer bunny President, Colleen Hedrick, my education co-chair and book
distributing Mary Scott, our always smiling multi-tasker 1st V.P. Debbie
Walker, and our hit-the-nail-on-the-head humorist, Chris Wennerholm.
We are making a big push with our current fund-raiser…selling 150 tick-
ets @ $15 each: Grand Prize is a gas barbeque grill, 1 st Prize is a night at
Benbow Inn, plus golf for two people, and beautiful gift baskets from Blue
Lake Casino and Cherae Heights Casino. Odds are four chances to win

This one really upsets me! As a public school teacher, I have long been
sickened by the inaccurate portrayals of American and World history in
our textbooks and schools. According to Harcourt Publishers, the Cold
War was won, not by Ronald Reagan, but instead by Mikhail Gorbachev!
Houghton Mifflin also states that Islam is a peaceful religion, and that
followers of Christianity, believing that theirs is the only true religion,
view using force as an acceptable means of conversion. A history profes-
sor from HSU mused that our Founding Fathers “had seen how much trou-
ble religion had caused in the world and were not about to have any of it in
their new country”. Unbelievable! In reality, the Founding Fathers, en-
gaged in the writing of the Constitution, prayed at length each morning for
God‟s guidance. For the longest time, I just could not believe how books
and people could lie like that. I have come to discover that they think they
are telling the truth. Over roughly the last century, there has been a
steady, progressive (pardon the pun) effort to rewrite history. You have
noticed that Obama accepts this Progressive agenda hook, line, and sinker.
As you know, he is trying his darnedest to dismantle our freedoms , our
economy, and in general, our American way of life. The first big push
came from Woodrow Wilson, followed and tweaked a bit by Franklin
Roosevelt, and now being arrogantly and boldly crammed down our
throats by the so-called “Anointed One”. Ladies, take time to see what is
in your children‟s and grandchildren‟s textbooks. Ask them what they are
learning in history class. If it is as bad as expected, challenge the text-
books and the teachers. Earlier this year, I was taken to task for assigning
Bill O‟Reilly‟s Factor for Kids, because he is “opinionated.” For those of
you who have not read it, Bill avoids politics completely and discusses
with common sense issues that impact pre-adolescents and teens. My stu-
dents and their parents absolutely love the book! However, another
teacher assigned the book Like Water for Chocolate, which was deemed
appropriate for fourteen-year olds! Somehow, I don‟t see reading about an
engaged woman having intimate relations with another man before her
own wedding as having any literary value for freshmen. The teacher‟s
justification was that the book was “multicultural”. If you are so inclined,
pray for our teachers and pray for our country and work to turn things
around!

FROM THE MOUTHS OF BABES….
I recently asked my friends' little girl what she
wanted to be when she grows up. She said she
wanted to be President some day. Both of her
parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there,
so I asked her, "If you were President, what
would be the first thing you would do?"
She replied, "I'd give food and houses to all the
homeless people." Her parents beamed.
"Wow...what a worthy goal." I told her, "But
you don't have to wait until you're President to
do that. You can come over to my house and
mow the lawn, pull weeds, and rake my yard,
and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to
the grocery store where the homeless guys hang
out, and you can give them the $50 to use to-
ward food and a new house."
She thought that over for a few seconds, then
she looked me straight in the eye and asked,
"Why don't the homeless guys come over and do
the work, and you can just pay them the $50?"
I shook her hand and said, "Welcome to the
Republican Party."
...Her parents still aren't speaking to me.
