California Legislation by Vee Sorenson

Voter attitudes show that they are mad, angry and are “not going to take this anymore.” Well over a
majority, 78 % of respondents, call the State’s budget situation a “big problem.” You would think a 30 %
approval rating for the Governor and a 21 % approval of the legislators would send a clear and profound
message. It makes it hard for those elected to care when they arrive in Sacramento from safe districts
where lines are drawn to reassure their seats.
Political strategist, Adam Mendelsohn, Schwarzenegger’s consultant, brought up an initiative proposal
that would create a part-time legislature and cut their pay by at least half. He predicted the new initiative
could be a hit with voters...especially because of pay cuts.
The downside was that only 23 % polled expressed support for a part time legislature, but the poll spiked
upward when cutting pay was added.
One journalist reported he gets e-mails from people who want to blow up Sacramento, hang the
legislators, kick them out of office.
The initiative process has helped, yet brought damaging and excessive spending. It Sacramento did a
proper job, honestly represented residents instead of feathering their own bank accounts and retirement
benefits, the initiative process would not have become so popular. Now it has become an entire industry in
this state.
The question I have is, will there be a change over the next election? Sometimes the electorate seems to
“get it” and votes logically. Other times they seem fickle and easily manipulated by untrue propaganda, via
advertisements. All we can do is hope and pray that the eyes of a majority of Californians will see the true
picture, vote to right the wrongs that have overtaken our state and that honest elections take place without
voter fraud.

C HAPLAIN ’ S C ORNER BY V EE S ORENSON

It is disturbing today to see some Americans determined to forget our holy roots and the Godly foundations
this nation was built upon.
Did you see in the news where an atheist was suing the organizers of the presidential inauguration
ceremony because a reference to God was included? How can we be surprised when so many movements
work tirelessly to take God and everything holy, Christian and sacred out of our schools, workplace and
government?
I would think that any person with a mentality above a first grade level would see what is happening. Just
look at the turmoil and shootings in our schools, the corruptness in our courts, businesses and
government. Since this campaign to remove the bible, prayer, the ten commandments from our daily lives
we have witnessed chaos and a country on the decline spiritually, morally and economically.
Let us pray for our nation that we will get back to a place where we learn to separate right from wrong,
good from evil. God help our nation.

R EPRINT : L ETTER TO THE E DITOR

Dear Editor:
“Free healthcare” is not free! Russia’s socialized healthcare system nearly killed my other and it’s a history
lesson that’s not worth repeating. I am the “Jane Doe” Larry Kerr described in his letter last week. I was
born and raised in Russia and became a U.S. citizen in 2004.
The utopian idea of “free healthcare and equality for all” has been failing Russia since the 1917 revolution.
That new government nationalized our healthcare industry (along with everything else). They paved the road
to healthcare hell, with the best intentions.
They destroyed what was known to be an excellent healthcare system and created two distinct classes, the
political elite and the masses.
The quality and availability of healthcare for the masses became so bad that it created a healthcare black mar-
ket complete with bribery and political “favors”.
When my mother was 59, she became very ill and started vomiting blood. She called the local physician and
was seen a few hours later. He made a record of her symptoms but did not provide a diagnosis or treatment
(no bribe, no care). She was fading fast; we called an ambulance, but they refused to take her to the hospital
(no bribe, no ride).
My mother had been working in the Oncology Institute as a nurse-technician for 30 years. She spent her ca-
reer treating cancer patients (and getting exposed to harmful radiation) for the equivalent of $100 per month.
She knew how the system worked and didn’t have enough money to bride her way into an emergency room.
Her pulse was dropping fast and she was losing conscious. She made a desperate call to Vladimir Niko-
layevich… an influential man (with a good heart) and the right political connections. Mr. Nikolayevich kindly
drove her to the hospital and got her admitted into intensive care where she (thankfully) recovered two weeks
later.
Thousands of Russians die unnecessarily each year in their homes and in the hospital’s hallways, but who’s to
blame? Underpaid doctors who are overwhelmed by mandated quotas? Ambulance workers with a state im-
posed rationing system and no incentives (other than bribes)? No, it is the socialized healthcare system that
promised “free medical care for all” but only delivered it to a selective few and left the rest of the nation no
choice but to die in silence.
Learn what not to do from Russia and please, please, please… don’t let the bureaucrats in Washington social-
ize our healthcare system. No matter what they call it this week, we don’t want our medical decisions to be
made by government workers with government budgets. The government has failed miserably with Social
Security, Medicare, and the Post Office. It’s been said that the government is not the solution to our prob-
lem. That government is the problem.

Cindy Lewis, HRWF treasurer, went to

Washington D.C. for the 9/12 Demonstration
and reported it was a “wonderful experience to
be part of the million plus persons who
demonstrated at the event.” She had the good
company of her daughter and granddaughters.
Cindy is pictured with Athena (on the left) and
Daphne Fortain at the event. Athena (age 8) and
Daphne (age 6) also enjoyed extensive
sightseeing with their mother and grandmother.
It was their second visit to our nation’s capital.
