We may grumble about the state of affairs at

the BC Roy Technology Hospital, but it would be
relieving and useful for all of us to know that
emergency services, basic medical facilities and
good doctors are available within minutes from
the IIT Kharagpur campus. These people charge
mediocre amounts (within Rs 200/- per
consultation) for their services and provide an
assured and better quality of treatment than
what we face at IIT Kharagpur. Moreover, the
UNI-CARE insurance policy that we avail
through our institute allows us to get all our
medical bills reimbursed, too. So, we can
actually get better medical services free of cost
without having to depend on the BC Roy
Technology Hospital.
IMPORTANT NOTE:

The latest Reliance MediAssist Health Insurance Cards for students are available in the respective
department offices. They have been lying there for almost 5-6 months and most of the students
seem to not have collected them. Please do so, as this is for your own good. The MediAssist ID
present on the Card is essential for settlement of any kind of insurance claims. The insurance card
also comes with a booklet that contains information on how to avail the insurance facility, use it in
case of emergencies and settle reimbursement claims (details available at http://wwwoklet that

For the outgoing batch : The insurance policy is valid till September 2009, so it makes good
sense to still collect them.

In a couple of hours of searching, we were able to come up with a list of medical services
available in and around Kharagpur (within walking distance of Hotel Park), the details of which are
provided as follows:

Ambulance Services

1. Sanjoy Emergency Services - available at +91 9332282763. Provides 24x7 ambulance services
with assistance.

2. Malancha Ambulance – available at +91 9474969600. Ambulance is well-equipped, but no

assistance is provided.

3. Emergency Ambulance Services – available at +919932737099, + 919434194350.

4. Midnapore Scan Center (Keranitola, Midnapore) – available at +91 3222 266610, +91 3222
267398. This place provides 24x7 ambulance services, and also has facilities for performing
common medical tests like Pathology, X-Ray, ECG, etc.

5. 24 hrs Ambulance Pariseva (Balaji Mandir Unnayan Samiti) – available at +91 3222 252932,
+91 9434416749.

6. Ambulance (Municipality Hospital) – available at local number +91 3222 283241. Available
24x7.

7. Spandan Diagnostic Centre – available at +91 3222 257940 (Gole Bazar), +91 3222 221080
(Chota Tengra). This institute also provides 24x7 ambulance services and houses all common
medical test facilities at its main branch in Rabindranagar, Paschim Medinipur (number : +91
3222 263716, 275475; email ID : kgp_spandan@sancharnet.in).

8. Seven Star Club – available at +91 9434218535, +91 9434243542, +91 9434243543. The
ambulances are small in size to lay down a person properly (Omni Vans are provided).

CT Scan and MRI Scan services

Near IIT Kharagpur, these services are provided only by Spandan Diagnostic Center main branch
at Rabindranagar, Paschim Medinipur which is about 15 kms from the campus. Spandan is a
100-bedded hospital. Outside Kharagpur, one needs to go to Kolkata and reach out to one of
the Multi-speciality hospitals like the Apollo Hospital, SSKM PG Hospital and AMRI Hospital (details
about these hospitals are directly accessible via Google).
Dialysis services

Near IIT Kharagpur, these services are provided only by Spandan Diagnostic Center main
branch at Rabindranagar, Paschim Medinipur which is about 15 kms from the campus. One’s case
needs to be referred to Kolkata at one of the multi-speciality hospitals like the Apollo Hospital,
SSKM PG Hospital and AMRI Hospital (details about these hospitals are directly accessible via
Google).
Medicines and Dispensaries

There are a lot of medical stores and dispensaries available in the Chota Tengra region near Hotel
Park, which is about 2 kms from the IIT Campus. These stores are capable of providing medicines
and pharmaceuticals 24x7 (call-bell services are present here, i.e. even if the store is closed,
one can ring the bell outside the store and wake up the chemist after which he/she will fetch you
the required medicines). The typical opening hours of these stores are 8 AM – 10 PM. These are
as follows:

tests like X-Ray, Blood tests, etc.

2. Chaulya Medicals – available at +91 3222 221973. Also, capable of conducting basic medical
tests like X-Ray, Blood tests, etc.

tests like X-Ray, Blood tests, etc.

4. Giri Medicals – available at +91 9434033495.

5. Dhanvantari Medicals.

The people at these(1-5) stores are also capable of arranging an ambulance, if

contacted at the above numbers.

6. Tech Market has 2 medical stores, open during the normal working hours of Tech market, one
of which is also open on Mondays.

7. Bimala Jeevan Rekha - prop. Satadal Ghosh(B. Pharm)- contact no.9732423480, 03222-
220552, 266610, 26739810, 267398. Timing- 8am-1:30pm and 5pm-10pm(except Sunday).

5pm-10:30pm( Thursday close).Various doctors appointments can be taken from this

can be made thorugh this contact.

with Chaulya Medicals during 9 – 10 AM and 5 – 7 PM. Also, available at Dandapat Diagnostic
Center on Fridays during 10-11 AM.

2. Dr Ranjan Kamila – can be contacted at +91 9830071345. He is a famous orthopaedician at

Apollo Hospital, and can be contacted in case of emergency at the above number (currently
handling Mithun Madhusudan’s case of fractures).

3. Dr. Asis K. Mandal(MBBS, D. Ortho)- bone specialist can be contacted at +91 03222-277500,
Near Prem Bazar gate. Available Monday to Saturday between 8 AM- 11 AM (Wednesday and
Sunday close)

Neurologists

1. Dr Amar mishra – can be contacted at +91 9433012195. Available at Dandapat diagnostic

Center every Saturday during 9 AM – 12 noon. Also, during the last 2 weeks of each month, he
consults on Saturday evenings during 4 – 5 PM. Appointment must be made at Dandapat

Hospital who can also be reached by phone in case of an emergency.

Within Kharagpur, no reputed cardiologist is present. However, a couple of general physicians and

Facilities like these are not present in BC Roy Hospital. Within Kharagpur, Life Care Nursing Home
located at Hospital Road, Prembazar (2 kms from IIT Kharagpur campus) provides a 24x7
environment for such services. These are also available at Spandan Diagnostic Center main
branch at Rabindranagar, Paschim Medinipur which is about 15 kms from the campus and can be
reached by an ambulance. Also, a couple of nursing homes are present in the Chota Tengra area,
about 2 kms from campus.

Please REFRAIN FROM GOING TO THE KHARAGPUR S.D. (sub-divisional) HOSPITAL. It is

worse than the B C Roy Hospital in terms of its performance.

People (professors, staff, students) are also encouraged to provide more information about
