Title Open Space Planning: Erie County

Brief Background
The project is an exercise for open space planning in which a suitable analysis for open
space planning project was produced. Varieties of criteria are considered for the suitability
analysis for open space planning which is explained in the images.

Potential Technology
2D visuals can be produced using simple Adobe Photoshop colouring. However the data
produced and collected in this project can be referenced on top of GIS data for that region.
Part of the criteria for the project was to see the proximity to roads, water bodies, dense
population areas, vacant land, slopes/terrains and density of parks. Information such as this
can be found from digital sources, such as elevations from LIDAR data.

Advantages
 Easy to interpret as data is linked to a key legend
 The cost implications are not as high as the technology used is readily available on
the market.

Disadvantages

 Data can get misinterpreted if Key Legend has errors.

 Information is displayed not as accurately as it is limited to 2D (x, y axis)

Title Urban Redevelopment: Erie County

Brief Background
The idea for this project was to create an aesthetically pleasing 3d simulation to the
community within Erie County, NY.

Using photographed images – a sense of

realism is achieved.

A Google Maps image was placed in a 3D

environment along with an AutoCAD file.

Potential Technology
 ArcMap
 Photoshop CS3
 SketchUp
 AutoCAD

Advantages
 Realism can be achieved by overlaying actual photographs on 3d models
 Client finds it easier to relate too if they see known landmarks and references.

Disadvantages
 Cost of production and technology is considerably more expensive then 2D
 Data from technologies might not be up to date as the environment could have changed
(Google Maps).

Title Lumbinigram – Residential

Brief Background
The project proposed was for clients who had purchased some land and wanted to build a
residential complex on it. The aim of the simulation was to see how they could fully utilise the
land as efficiently as possible.

A collection of different ways to

visualise an idea to clients from
2D masterplans, 3D images and
simple 2D block sketches.

Potential Technology
 Photoshop CS3
 SketchUp
 AutoCAD
 3Ds Max

Advantages
 Combination of GIS and VR can create very accurate models and simulations
 Allows planners to easily visualise the end product.

Disadvantages
 Limited to the amount of detail that can be shown on a 3D model. Without over-
complicating a visualisation.

Title Landscape Planning

Brief Background
The project proposed was for a student competition to create new living quarters for
students. Emphasis was also placed on the landscaping as well as building placement.

Potential Technology
 Photoshop CS3
 SketchUp

Advantages
 Sketches can be generated easily and quickly saving on time and money.
 helps clients to visualise the way a project is heading

Disadvantages
 Can look a bit too sketchy and unprofessional
 Not as accurate as in, scale, building heights
