SALARY RANGE: $26.60 - $35.67 Per Hour

Note: Position is limited to 20 hours/week or 960 hours in a fiscal year.

THE POSITION: Current opening exists in Public Services. Under supervision of a Librarian II, utilizes
independent application of professional library techniques. Responsible for managing, or may assist in
managing a library section: Adult Reference, Young Adult Services, Children’s Services or Automation.

Job Characteristic: May work a varying schedule which may include nights and weekends.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Manage the service functions of a library section which will include supervision of personnel, planning
of public programming, and collection development.
• Assist the public in effective use of the library and in finding materials and information.
• May catalog library materials, prepare bibliographies.
• May manage and/or make use of various automated systems within the library.
• May maintain specialized collections.
• May prepare statistical and other reports regarding library operations and use.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Knowledge of:

• Principles and practices of library work, particularly as related to an assigned area of expertise.
• Materials, equipment and sources of supply relating to field of assignment.
• Books, literature and reading.
• Print and automated information resources.

Ability to:

• Communicate effectively with library staff and users.


• Plan work and prioritize tasks to ensure timely completion of assignments.
• Operate standard office machines and equipment, including computer workstations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in a Library environment and
requires standing for prolonged periods of time. An incumbent stands, walks, and may twist, reach, bend,
crouch and kneel. May require the ability to climb ladders or step stools, push or pull book carts, lift and carry
books or move boxes of materials weighing up to 25 pounds from one location to another. Tasks require visual
perception and discrimination as well as oral communications ability. An incumbent must be able to meet the
physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the
duties to be performed.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the
required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be: Graduation from a four-year college,
plus demonstrated supervisory ability and appropriate library experience. A Master’s degree in Library Science
is desirable. A valid California driver’s license is required.
