Passage 1
Computers are helpful in many ways: first, they are very
fast. They can work with information much more quickly
than a person. Second, computers can work with a lot of
information at the same time. Third, they can keep it for a
long time. They do not forget things the way people do. Also
computers are almost always correct. They don't usually
make mistakes.
These days, it is important to know something about
computers. There are a number of ways to learn. Some
companies have classes at work. Also, most universities offer
day and night courses in computer science. Another way to
learn is from a book. There are many books about computers
in bookstores and libraries. Or you can learn from a friend.
After a few hours of practice you can work with computers.
Passage 2
We use the Students’ Centre a lot. The college is a long
way from the centre of the town, and having this centre
means we don’t have to travel into town every time we want
to buy something. The shop has food like milk, bread, eggs…
and it also sells newspapers. There is a laundry with six
washing machines, where we can do the ironing, too. More
importantly, there is a Clinic which employs a doctor and a
nurse. That’s only during the day. If a student has a problem
at nigh, there’s an emergency number – 7014822. Another
important thing is the Advice Centre, which is open 24 hours
a day. If a student needs someone’s help, he can come
there and talk about his/ her problem.
What’s nice about the Students’ Centre is that it’s a
new building, a bright and happy place to be in.
Passage 3
Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland. There are many
interesting things for you to see there. It may take 2 or 3
days to have a look around the city.
First is the zoo, which is open between 9a.m and 6p.m, 365
days a year. The zoo is only 15 minutes’ drive from the city
centre.
Second is the historical Duddy Church which is open to
visitors every weekday. Tea will be served in this twelfth
century church in the afternoon.
One of the best ways to see this beautiful city is to join a
coach tour. The tours cover all parts of the city and leave
from Waverly Bridge every hour. You will be surprised how
much you can see in one day.
If the weather is clear. Visit Camera Obscure, which is open
every day. Here you can look out on beautiful views of
Edinburgh.
Passage 4
One of the most famous Russian composers of the nineteenth century, Peter
Illich Tchaikovsky, was born on May 7, 1840. Tchaikovsky studied music as
a child and later studied composition at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. His
greatest period of productivity was between 1876 and 1890. During that
time Tchaikovsky created the music for which he is most famous. Including
the music for the ballets of Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty.

that brought serious music to dance. Before this, little attention had been

Emilio grew up on a farm in Argentina. He left school at the age of fourteen,
and started working on the farm. He enjoyed the simple village life and
when his father died, Emilio took over the farm. All his life Emilio has lived
in the old farmhouse where he was born. So his seventy-year life has
changed very little. When he was 22, he married Pilar, a girl from the next
village, and they have been happily married ever since. Two years ago they
celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Everybody was there,
including Emilio and Pilar's six children and their fifteen grandchildren.
Emilio and Pilar have never been abroad. Until he was 60, Emilio
went to Buenos Aires once a year, but since his sixtieth birthday he hasn't
left the village.
