Modified Wilson Plot Method for determination of multiplier and
exponent in Nusselt Number Correlation

o Known: Inlet and outlet temperatures and mass flow rates

o Fluid properties are evaluated at T´m

o The control variable in this experiment is the mass flow rate of the cold fluid stream ¿
o The heat transfer coefficients for the hot and cold sides of plate heat exchanger are obtained by
the following equations
1 0.14
kc μ
h c=
Dhyd
C c ℜcp Pr c3
( )
μs t

And
1 0.14
kh μ
h h=
D hyd
C h ℜhp Pr h3
( )

o The following basic relation is algebraically manipulated in two different ways to obtain two
relations which are later plotted on separate graphs:

1 1 t 1
= +

o Plot X1 and Y1 to determine Cc-1 and Ch-1 using a guess value for ‘p’.

Iterative Procedure:
o The value of Ch obtained from the linear plot (X1, Y1) coupled with the initial guess value of “p” is
used to obtain a logarithmic plot as delineated by the logarithmically modified version of the
basic relation
o The gradient of the logarithmic equation is the root, or the iterated value of p
o Reinsert the gradient ‘p’ obtained from the second plot (X 2, Y2) into Equation (1) to get a new
value of ‘p’ in the second plot. Now this value is closer to the solution (i.e. converging) as can be
seen clearly from the spread of the line about the points or the R value
o Repeat this procedure until the difference tends to a value smaller than the error i.e. converges
o The value of “p” converges to a solution after performing several iterations for the assumed
data
o See Excel Sheet for more detail, or refer to the MATLAB code
