Professional Social Worker

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION


The Professional Social Services Worker is responsible for providing social services to identified
groups, individuals and families within applicable legislation in order to protect and improve the
social well-being and functioning of company and individuals.

SCOPE
The social worker reports to the Director, company and must provide case plans/plans of
care to his/her supervisor for approval. In many situations, the PSW must make his/her own
decisions and take action independently without consultation with the supervisor. The PSW is
expected to seek direction from his/her supervisor when faced with out of the ordinary situations.
The caseload may include multi-problem with complex needs. Poor decision making can have a
profoundly negative impact on company image. The day to day workload is often crisis oriented

RESPONSIBILITIES
Main Activities
 Ensure legislation, standards and guidelines are being followed
 Provide support services
 Conduct investigations into reports(i.e. conduct interviews and facilitate
 medical or psychological examinations)
 Provide counseling and support
 Prepare court documents where applicable (written and verbal)
 Develop and implement case plans including reviews and evaluations
 Facilitate and participate in case conferencing
 Provide mental health services within the code of ethics and the Mental Health Act
 Conduct needs and risk assessments
 Provide counseling services including helping clients to identify problems and possible
solutions
 Provide resolution and referral services for clients who require specialized
counseling
 Facilitate needs fulfillment through the provision of counseling and/or referral
Services
 Acts as an officer of the court
 Conduct needs assessments (i.e. residential placement, finance, safety)
 Assist clients with attaining resources that fit their needs including the provision of
Financial assistance when required
 Monitor needs fulfillment and needs development
 Develop appropriate programs and services
 Provide feedback on written documents

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES


The candidate requires knowledge of social work theories, practices and procedures. The
candidate requires knowledge and understanding of all pertinent legislation and policies. The
candidate requires specific knowledge in the areas of needs and risk assessment. The candidate
requires knowledge of case management, case conferencing and investigation and intervention
theories and practices.
The candidate must be able to respond or assist in emergency situations and have very good
interpersonal, mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution skills. He/she must have well
developed organizational, verbal and written communications skills, interviewing and analytical
skills and good computer skills. The candidate must be flexible, adaptable and able to work
effectively in a variety of settings and in a cross-cultural situation and be knowledgeable of the
services available in the country. He/she must demonstrate sound judgement particularly in
dealing with safety issues and in dealing with aggressive clients. The candidate must have an
understanding of crisis management and the ability to deal with life threatening situations.

WORKING CONDITIONS
There are considerable physical demands associated with this position. The incumbent faces a
significant amount of emotional stress which can cause related physical stress on muscles as well
as other physical symptoms such as headaches and fatigue. The incumbent is also on call and
must often respond to situations during off hours which can disrupt normal sleep patterns and
cause fatigue.
The incumbent works in an extremely stressful environment where there are considerable mental
and emotional demands. The volume of work as well as the unpredictability of the work cause
mental stress and the mental demands associated with assessments and life altering decisions that
must be made.

Job Specification
Social Worker Education
To be a social worker, especially with a registered body, one needs to hold a college degree,
and/or a master's or doctorate degree in social work. Degrees are usually a Bachelor of Social
Work (BA, BSc or BSW) degree, a master's (MA, MSc or MSW) or the doctoral degree (Ph.D or
DSW). The degrees includes subjects like human behavior, practice, rehabilitation measures,
disaster management, ethics, statistics, finance, etc. There is no particular strict compulsion from
where one obtains the degree as long as it is valid.

Social Worker Skills and Specifications


 Does not mind working in less than sanitary conditions in depressed areas
 Does not mind working in rural hospitals and clinics where the social work may lead
them
 Must have a deep compassion for the poor and less privilege in society
 Must have excellent physical health and mental alertness
 Must have god interpersonal and verbal communication skills
 Can work long hours caring for indigents, migrants, children and family in distress,
problem children, etc.

Ans 3:

staffed by MSW Coordinators who know social work practice and take the time to understand
the specific education, licensure, experience and work traits required by a social worker to match
the needs of the organization and position being filled.

The primary requirement to affiliate with Social Work is holding a Bachelor’s, Master’s or
Doctorate degree from a CSWE (Council on Social Work Education) accredited social work
program.  Additional requirements include social work licensing according to state regulations,
malpractice insurance, professional references, and criminal background clearance.
