Behaviour and Discipline Policy

1. INTRODUCTION

An agreed policy of behaviour is vital for quality teaching and learning. This policy outlines the management of
behaviour and discipline at John Bramston Primary for pupils in Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and
Key Stage 2.

2. AIMS

• Respect for others amongst staff and pupils to be evident.

• A sense of well being and trust between children and staff to be evident.
• Children being knowledgeable and feeling secure about expected behaviour.
• A calm and purposeful atmosphere conducive to learning.

3. IMPLEMENTATION

3.1 The School Prospectus outlines to parents the expected behaviour of pupils and expectation on parents to
support the school in attaining these.

3.2 Through assembly and class discussion an agreed code of conduct (Golden Rules), Listening Time
Behaviour, Rules for the Playground and the reward and sanction systems in use are made explicit to pupils. (see
Appendices)

3.3 Children with difficulties in meeting any part(s) of the Code of Conduct actively participate in setting
achievable individual targets with the Class Teacher. In the event of this not meeting the need then the SENCO
is informed and if necessary outside agencies approached for support. Children with SEN will require alternative
methods for rewards and sanctions to suit their individual needs.

3.4 All serious incidents are recorded in the incidents book. The school regards all incidents of a racist and a
sexual nature to be serious.

4. CONTINUITY AND PROGRESSION

4.1 The Golden Rules, Listening Time Behaviour, Rules for the Playground and reward and sanction system are
reviewed annually with the children.

4.2 At Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children’s behaviour is always discussed at the twice yearly Parents
Teacher interviews and commented upon in the Annual report to Parents.

4.3 Appointments are arranged by either parents or teachers if at any time behaviour is a cause for concern.

4.4 A Code of Conduct is displayed in all classrooms and in key areas around school.

4.5 All staff (teachers, classroom assistants, clerical, midday assistants, caretaker and cleaners) refer to the
Golden Rules in discussing issues of behaviour with children and act consistently within the reward and sanction
system.
4.6 Those owning up to misbehaviour are commended for having the courage to be honest.

4.7 Fighting is particularly inappropriate and undesirable. If KS2 children are caught fighting by an adult in
school their parents are contacted and invited to take their child home and spend time discussing the seriousness
of the behaviour. All children involved in a fight not seen by an adult meet with an adult to discuss the
behaviour and from Y1 onwards they are given the opportunity to reflect upon their behaviour during a
lunchtime.

REVIEW

This policy will be reviewed annually.

TIME OUT PROCEDURE

In class a child not working appropriately is told their behaviour is unacceptable and why. This is a warning.

If the behaviour is repeated the child is issued with a Time Out. The child is sent (with work) to work in another
classroom only returning to their own room at the next lesson.

A monitoring sheet records Time Outs – see attachement..

BEHAVIOUR REFLECTION PROCEDURE

A detention can be given by any member of the school staff. Behaviours that may warrant a detention include:

• fighting at KS1 or KS2 (not seen by an adult)

• swearing

• name calling

• damaging property

• refusing to obey instructions

• rudeness towards adults

When a detention is given, the reason for it must be explained to the child. The detention must be noted in the
detention book and monitored by the classteacher – see attached sheet.

Children who attend Behaviour Reflection regularly for the same inappropriate behaviour will be excluded for a
fixed term.

EXCLUSIONS

A permanent exclusion is for extreme and significant breaches of behaviour, for example, physically aggressive
behaviour towards others in school. When such cases are considered, referral should be made to the DFCS
guidance.

Fixed term exclusions are for serious breaches of the school rules. Some examples are

• refusal to follow staff direction

• stealing school property

• damaging school property

• causing injury to another person

• misconduct when representing the school off site.
