I- BASIC SPANISH 201

Course Objectives

1. Students will analyze patterns of language to formulate an understanding of how grammatical

structures/forms function to create a communication tool. Students will create meaning by
applying this knowledge to their emerging language skills.

2. Students will discover how cultures interact with languages through the exploration of
regional language use, social implications of words and languages and the development of
language through culture over time.

3. Students will acquire language learning skills by reflecting on their current study habits and
learning methods, exploring new ones, applying new ones, evaluating their success throughout
the semester and creating strategies for personal growth in the future.

4. Students will demonstrate communicative competence in Spanish by

a) Presenting an oral presentation with supporting materials, including required
technology
b) Writing compositions in various forms with an identified purpose, using
appropriate conventions of format and structure
c) Working in teams to create ad lib skits and perform these skits in front of the
class

5. Students will exhibit increasing intercultural competence through exposure to and exploration
of
a) Geographic regions where Spanish is spoken
b) The local Latino population, including retail, community and institutional
organizations
c) The major issues involving the communities of Spanish speakers in the region
and country
d) Technology as a tool for communication with Spanish speakers

II- COURSE OVERVIEW

1. Participation: Participation is your willingness to ask and answer questions posed by the teacher or other
students. It includes willingness to work in groups, large and small, and to assist others with their work. It also
includes preparation, alertness and daily attendance.

2. Attendance: Daily on-time class attendance is of vital importance in language acquisition. Three unexcused
absences are allowed. Unexcused absences are: sickness, family emergencies, doctor’s appointments, etc. For
each unexcused absence beyond three, 3% will be subtracted from your final grade. For example: if you have a
B at the end of the course but have 4 absences, your final grade will be a B-. Excused absences are University
obligations, sports and field trips. For an excused absence, you must inform your instructor either in writing or in
person as soon as possible. Tardiness, or arriving later than 5 minutes past the start time, will be treated as an
absence.

3. Exams: There is one exam per chapter. Make-up exams are not permitted.

4. Compositions: You will complete three compositions on a variety of topics and in a variety of styles to prepare
them for the different situations you will likely encounter using a second language. You will participate in various
editing tasks with your classmates.

5. MySpanishLab: Each chapter is accompanied by online practice activities. The MSL card you purchase will
provide you with a password you will use for 101, 102 and 201- do not lose it. You will need a microphone and
online access in order to complete these activities. Alternatively, the language lab is equipped with these and is
prepared for you to use. Refer to the calendar and the website for specific due dates.

6. Language Lab: The Language Lab is provided by the department as a quiet, convenient place to complete your
MySpanishLab activities. Each computer also has interactive Spanish activities from the former Puntos textbook.
The lab is located in 302 Burnett Hall and the hours are posted on this website:

8. Podcast: You will create a podcast using Garage Band software. Your instructor will give you more detailed
instructions as the semester progresses.

9. Linguafolio: You will prepare a linguafolio throughout the semester, chapter by chapter, whose main
purpose is to help you learn to set and attain language learning goals and assess your progress in the class. It will
include a personal language overview, a checklist of growth, evidence of learning in world perspectives, and
others. These may be submitted electronically or in paper form, according to your instructor’s directions.

10. Final Exam: The final exam is a comprehensive/cumulative two-hour exam. It will include all the chapters
studied in this course and thus requires that you synthesize, or draw all the information together. There will be an
Alternative Final Exam at a different time and day if a student has a conflict with another exam or has three exams
on the same day. Written proof will be required. The following are not considered an excuse to take this
alternative exam: family gatherings, plane tickets or other personal issues.

11. ANDRILL. This educational project will be completed at three different steps throughout the semester, giving
you the opportunity to practice Spanish in context. It is vital that you attend each day, as make-ups will be
impossible due to the nature of science experiments.

13. Grading Procedures:

III- STATEMENT ON ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

Using another person’s work as your own constitutes academic dishonesty. If a student plagiarizes another
student’s work, both students may be charged with academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty also includes the
use of online translators. Students may accept help from a tutor only to the extent that they are not representing
the tutor’s work as their own. Students found cheating will receive a grade of 0 for the test or assignment in
question; the instructor may also report the incident to the Director of Student Judicial Affairs and further action
will be taken if necessary. Consult your Undergraduate Bulletin for further information.

IV- FINAL NOTES

 1. January 18th (Tuesday): Last day to withdraw from one or more courses for the term and receive 100%
refund.
 2. March 4th (Friday): Last day to change a course registration to or from Pass / No Pass.
 3. Cellular phones need to be turned off in class and in the lab. Food or drinks are not allowed in the lab.
 4. No texting is permitted in class. You will be asked to leave if you are texting in class and counted
absent for that day.
