Psalm 46 is a tremendous KINGDOM psalm that talks about the river of God. It prophetically speaks of the removal of the Old Covenant System and the establishment of the KINGDOM. Psalm 46:1-11
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. There is a RIVER, the streams whereof shall make GLAD the CITY of GOD, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The HEATHEN RAGED, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. Come, behold the works of the LORD, what DESOLATIONS he hath made in the earth. He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

God is the refuge and strength of his people. His people would not fear though the earth be removed, and the mountains would be cast in the sea. This is a picture of the removal of a political or religious system. It aptly describes the removal of the temple and Old Covenant Jerusalem as prophesied by Christ and the suffering of the early church during the birth pangs of the Kingdom age.

The trouble experienced by the saints would be rewarded by the release of the RIVER OF GOD. This is described by both John and Ezekial as a river of life that brings healing to the nations.

The Psalmists describes the joy released by this river. Joy and gladness are elements of the KINGDOM.

This river flows in New Covenant Zion. Zion is the CHURCH (Heb.12:22-23). Zion cannot be shaken. The KINGDOM cannot be shaken because it is not an earthly kingdom. It is heavenly and eternal.

The Psalmist then talks about the RAGE of the HEATHEN. This is also spoken of in Psalm 2 concerning the opposition to the KINGDOM.

The fulfillment of this is recorded in Acts chapter 4, and includes Pontius Pilate, Herod, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel (Acts 4:25-28). The emphasis was the RAGE of the HEATHEN would not stop the King and his Kingdom (Psa.2:16)

The result of God's judgments upon those who resisted the kingdom would be DESOLATIONS. Jesus talked about the DESOLATION that would come to Jerusalem.

Luke 21:20
And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the DESOLATION thereof is nigh. The Jewish war (A.D 67-70) was a time of DESOLATIONS, but it would come to an end with the destruction of the temple by the Roman armies. The end result would be GOD EXALTED AMONG THE HEATHEN. This is the establishment and advance of the KINGDOM. The River of God now flows to the nations. This river brings healing and joy wherever it goes. Those who come to Zion can experience the RIVER of GOD. Every local church should experience the joy and gladness this river brings. This is KINGDOM living: THE RIVER OF GOD
