"Epiphany" is a season that shows us the part of Christ's life when He and His teaching becomes known to many people. When Jesus tells us to be "holy", it is something to be both both bothered by and comforted by. Reflect on the Readings: Leviticus 19:1-2, 9-18 - I Am The Lord - God lays out laws for the people of Israel to follow.

“Epiphany”. Epiphany is a season that shows us the part of Christ’s life when He and His teaching becomes known to many people. It is a time of displaying and manifesting Christ in our personal and public lives.
About this Sunday: The word “kadosh” in Hebrew
is what gets translated “holy. When God tells His people to be Holy, it is something that He knows is only accomplished through supernatural means, He knows that it is different from the rest of the world, and He knows that it is perfection. When Jesus tells us to be “holy” – it is something to be both bothered by and comforted by because He gives us the holiness that we could not achieve on our own. Reflecting on the Readings: • Leviticus 19:1-2, 9-18 – I Am The Lord – God lays out laws for the people of Israel to follow, giving His “Lordship”, His authority as God as reason. Are you questioning His Lordship in the things He asks of you? • Psalm 119:33-40 – Enlivened by Righteousness – God’s holiness brings us life, especially in His holiness given to us in Jesus’ saving work for us. Are you enlivened by this holiness? • I Corinthians 3:10-11, 16-23 – Foundation of Holiness – Jesus is the foundation of our holiness, not our own actions. Without Him as our foundation, our works are worthless. Are you centering your works on the foundation of Jesus? • Matthew 5:38-48 – Be Perfect – Jesus again lays out the standard of perfection for us to follow. Even if you cannot follow it all, you can try to follow some. Why aren’t you trying to follow some of what Jesus says here? Or are you? Law and Gospel: • Law: You’re not holy, at least on your own. Look at holiness displayed in the readings. If you break even one of those things ever, it is like breaking the perfect fragile vase of your holiness. It is irreparable and it is permanent. One infraction and you’re no longer holy. • Gospel: Holiness has never been a capability of the human race. Holy is far more than “sinless”, it is something that is “the ultimate supernatural good”. That is what Jesus promises is given to us in our Baptisms. We have living inside of us the revelation of the supernatural perfect – Jesus Christ Living the Lectionary Ideas: • Learn: All Christian theology is built on the concept of “justification”, they way in which Jesus makes us holy. What do you know about Justification? • Do: Try to be holy. You will not succeed, but there is great spiritual wisdom and greater thanksgiving for forgiveness to be found in the process of trying to live a holy life. • Live: Live this week giving away all that you can, as Jesus says to in this reading. See what it is like.
