Concept of HRM: HRM is the part of the organization that is concerned with the

‘people’ dimension of management. HRM deals with human relations of an organization


starting from recruitment to labor relation. It is a process of acquisition, development,
motivation and maintenance of human resources of an organization. HRM is a part of
General management that deals with the human aspect. Many authors defines it is
different manner. Some of them are quoted below:

According to M.J. Jucious, “The field of HRM involves Planning, Organizing, Directing
and Controlling functions of procuring, developing, maintaining and utilizing a labor
force.”

According to Mathis and Jackson, “HRM is the effective use of Human resources in and
organization through the management of people related activities.”

Objective of HRM: The needs and desires of the employers and employees have been
rapidly changing over the decades for various practical reasons. Following objectives are
important. With the fulfillments, of these objectives HRM can be successful.

1. Resourcing: HRM aims at identifying the right quality, type and number of employees.
Thus it helps and organization to obtain and retain skilled, committed and well-motivated
workforce so that its strategic and operational goals are fulfilled.

2. Developing: First objective of HRM is to develop efficiency and skills of employees


working in the organization. If these objectives are achieved organization can reach at its
target.

3. Performance: Effective performance of employees can be ensured by HRM. Effective


performance at all levels can help the organization to obtain productivity target.

4. Behavior of employees: With a view to change behavior of employees HRM activities


can be performed. Behavior change can ensure to reduce resistance to change.

5. To train up subordinates: The fourth objective of HRM is to train up subordinates for


effective performance. There may be different methods of training employees.

Principles of HRM: Among the approaches such as traditional approach, scientific
approach, human resource approach; human resource approach is the latest approach to
manage people at work. A number of principles provide the basis for a human resource
approach.

1. Scientific selection: Putting right man in the right place by a careful program of
selection procedure and placement to make sure that the new recruit is physically,
mentally and psychologically fit for the job to be performed. This is needed for the new
employee to develop and grow.

2. Policies: Policies and programs must be prepared and practiced that satisfy both the
economic and emotional needs of employees.

3. Training: Training the new recruits for developing technical competence to perform so
that they can discharge their duties and responsibilities efficiently.

4. Security: Ensuring employee security with opportunity, incentive and recognition,


thereby encouraging employees to stick to their jobs in the hope of advancement in the
firm and thereby reducing turnover and loitering.

5. Environments: Working environment must be created so that employees are


encouraged to develop and utilize their skills to the maximum extent.

6. Balance: Human resource policies and programs must be implemented with the goal of
balancing the needs and requirements both the organization and the employees.

7. Dignity: Every job and every jobholder must be treated with dignity and respect.

8. Communication: Free flow of communication should be ensured to keep all channels


of communication open and to encourage every jobholder to communicate freely
(upward, downward, horizontal, formal and informal communication).

Human resource function refers to those tasks and duties performed in both large and
small organization to provide for and co-ordinate human resources. Human resource
functions are concerned with a variety of activities that significantly influence all areas of
