Communications Coordinator

Science Alberta Foundation

The Position:
As Communications Coordinator, you will collect and write compelling stories about the impact of
sponsorship and donations on the mission of our foundation, which is to be leader in the development of
science literacy, enabling all to excel in a global society. You will support the cultivation, education,
solicitation and recognition of major funding prospects and actively communicate with them using various
media.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Communications, Marketing and Public Engagement, you will work in
close collaboration with the Senior Manager, Development and other members of the Development team
and the CEO. You will bring a communications perspective to our resource development activities,
assisting with program planning and analysis, as well as prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation
and stewardship (the donor cycle).

Working within a small but dynamic team, you will also have an opportunity to contribute your writing
expertise to our various program assets, including our videos, games, exhibits and other digital tools.

Key Responsibilities:
• Design and deliver communication that will help acquire new donors, motivate existing
contributors to higher levels, maintain interest and support for the foundation, and ensure repeat
gifts.
• Assist in the delivery of the Resource Development Plan, ensuring alignment with SAF’s overall
Communications and Marketing Strategy.
• In collaboration with other members of the Development team, prepare and manage the timelines
and content for proposals and provide potential donors with appropriate, well-researched and
customized opportunities.
• Assist in the development of a communications and marketing plan by providing relevant, donor-
centered information and suggestions.
• Coordinate with SAF Program staff to identify and optimize sponsor recognition opportunities.
Assist with the development and growth of sponsorship and philanthropic cultures within SAF.
• Support all resource development communication needs, including meeting preparation and
follow-up, communications and materials, as requested by the Senior Manager, Development.

• Contribute to other projects as required, including speaking notes for the leadership team and
other communications when requested.

Qualifications:
• At least 3 to 5 years of proven professional experience in communications, marketing or public
relations.
• Experience with proposal writing is an asset.
• A degree or diploma in communications, marketing, business or related field from a recognized
post-secondary institution is preferred.
• Membership in a professional association, with a demonstrated desire to learn new skills and
maintain best practices knowledge.

Skills & Abilities:


• Strong writing, presentation and verbal communication skills.
• An ability to take complex subjects and explain them in plain language.
• Ability and willingness to focus on donor-centered communication and respond effectively to
donor expectations.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently and yet, integrate with a diverse team.
• Knowledgeable about sponsorship fulfillment and donor cultivation and stewardship is of benefit.
• Experience working with social media, including still photography and videography for online
application.
• Knowledge of content management systems as a tool for website updates and maintenance.
• Adept with the Adobe suite of products (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) or equivalent, as well as
Microsoft Office and Outlook.
