Allergy Relief: Nothing to Sniff At
(NewsUSA) - Do you have
difficulty controlling your allergy
symptoms even though you’re on
medications? Or do you still get
allergy-like symptoms even when
the allergy season is over? If so,
you may be one of over 40 million
people who suffer from a condition
called nonallergic rhinitis.
Easily confused with seasonal
allergies, nonallergic rhinitis
causes similar symptoms such
as congestion, runny nose,

that 50 to 70 percent of allergy
sufferers also have nonallergic
rhinitis.
If you think that you might have
nonallergic causes for your
symptoms, ask your doctor.
Unfortunately, allergy pills like
Claritin, Zyrtec and Allegra
do little to relieve nonallergic
rhinitis. Instead, your doctor may
recommend a prescription nasal
steroid or a new over-the-counter
nasal spray called Sinus Buster,
which has been clinically proven
to provide significant relief for
sufferers who have both allergic
and nonallergic causes for their
symptoms. Sinus Buster contains
capsaicin -; one of the most

PADDYFEST TO BE HELD ON
SATURDAY
BIG RAPIDS — Paddyfest will
be held from 6 p.m. to midnight
Saturday at the Parish Center,

Rapids. Tickets are available at St.
Mary Catholic School for $20 each,
with all proceeds benefiting the
school.
The evening will include a bagpipe
player, music from the band 4-Play,
dancing, a 50/50 raffle and a
traditional Irish meal. Corned beef,
cabbage, chicken, potatoes, salad
and Irish soda bread will be served
beginning at 6:30 p.m. Green beer
also will be served.
“This is just good old Irish
camaraderie,” said Dolores Horan,
a member of the organizing
committee. “It’s our chance to
chase away the winter blues and
look forward to spring.”
Horan came up with the idea
for Paddyfest when thinking of
possible changes to the church’s
annual Spring Gala fundraiser,
because it is scheduled at a later
than usual date due to a late
Easter. Horan proposed holding
the gala on St. Patrick’s Day, but
the committee decided to host two
separate events instead.
Organizers expect to see up to 250
people attend Paddyfest.
Tickets are available at Currie’s

PICKS LANGDON FOR
SUPERINTENDENT FINALIST
ANN ARBOR – Big Rapids Public
Schools Superintendent Tom
Langdon has been chosen as one
of six candidates for the position of
superintendent at the Washtenaw
Intermediate School District.
Langdon will interview at 6:30 p.m.
on Wednesday.
The other finalists are Scott
Menzel, superintendent of the
Livingston Educational Service
Agency; Beverly Knox-Pipes,
assistant superintendent for
technology and media services
for the Genesee Intermediate
School District; David Campbell,
superintendent of the Olivet
Community Schools; Christine
Beardsley, superintendent of
Oscoda Area Schools; and Thomas
Goodney, deputy superintendent
and chief of staff at the Educational
Service Center of Central Ohio.
The interviews, which are open to
the public, will take place at the
WISD, located at 1819 Wagner
Road.
Langdon also applied for the
position of superintendent at
Sturgis Public Schools, where he
interviewed on Tuesday, and West
Ottawa Public Schools, where he
interviewed on Thursday.
CELEBRATE FOOT HEALTH
AWARENESS MONTH WITH A
BRISK WALK
(NewsUSA) - A walk in the
fresh April air is an ideal way
to participate in Foot Health
Awareness Month.
“Walking is great exercise for
the feet,” said Robert Zwolak,
MD, president of the Society for
Vascular Surgery. Both podiatrists
and vascular surgeons agree that
good blood flow is essential for
foot health. A brisk 30-minute walk
every day is just what the doctor
ordered.
Simple advice for daily foot care
include:
* Improve circulation by walking,
bicycling, dancing and swimming.
* Inspect feet for cuts, sores,
blisters, redness, warm spots
or swelling. Wash feet in warm
water. Moisturize for soft skin. Cut
toenails straight across.
* Wear socks and properly fitting
shoes.
* Protect feet from heat and cold.
* Wiggle toes. Flex feet and
ankles for five minutes two to three
times each day to maintain blood
flow.
“Feet are our foundation,” said
Dr. Michael King, president of the
American Podiatric Association.
“Healthy feet are fundamental
to the quality of our daily lives.
We need to take care of them
every day, and see a medical
professional if they begin to hurt.”
Vascular surgeons and podiatrists
work closely to access and treat
patients with severe foot problems.
Many symptoms require care by a
podiatrist:
* Hair loss on toes may be a sign
of poor circulation.
* Blue thread veins and very white
skin are common among lifelong
smokers and may indicate vascular
disease.
* A swollen foot may indicate a
blocked lymph node or deep vein
thrombosis, a dangerous blot clot
in the legs.
* Corns and blisters are important
to treat promptly in those with
diabetes. Sufferers may not
feel the pain in their feet due to
numbness, and left untreated,
these conditions may lead to
serious illness.
* Dry, cracked heels may indicate
a thyroid problem.
* Swollen feet may indicate heart
or kidney problems.
* Any changes in the color,
thickness or loosening of the
toenails should be evaluated.

stairs instead of the elevator. When
you go shopping, walk around the
whole mall.
* Always eat breakfast. Choose
whole grains and healthy fats. For
example, try eating fruit with low-fat
yogurt or whole-grain toast spread
with a tiny amount of jam or peanut
butter.
* Prepare your favorite foods in
healthier ways. For example, you
can bake chicken instead of frying
it. Reduce the amount of butter
you use; fresh or dried herbs can
provide flavor without fat. Try using
a little less salt. You might not even
notice the difference.
* Learn to eat healthy on-the-go.
Try to choose restaurants with
healthy options. Order vegetable
pizza instead of pepperoni or
sausage, or a plain hamburger
without sauce or mayonnaise
instead of a bacon cheeseburger.
Get a side salad instead of fries,
and be sure to request fat-free or
low-fat dressing. Split portions with
friends.
* Make healthier choices at
parties or social events. Snack on
pretzels or cut-up vegetables, and
skip the soda. If you drink alcohol,
limit yourself to one drink.

* Put down your fork. Slow down

use the dishwasher after dinner --
wash, dry and put away the dishes
