 PRODUCT INFORMATION

INTRODUCTION:
Constipation is a very common condition seen all over the world, across various age
groups, especially in the elderly people. Although there are several reasons for this,
fiber-free or fiber-deficient diet is one of the reasons for constipation. The condition
could become chronic if timely and proper treatment is not taken. The best remedy for
this would be either a fiber rich diet or a fiber supplement.

COMPOSITION:
Each 5g contains:
• Plantago ovata husk - 2.5 g
• Trigonella foenum graecum - 0.1 g
Standardized for fiber content
Excipients q.s.

PHARMACOLOGY:
Leseffort is a safe bulk forming laxative and is naturally endowed with intestinal
demulcent property. It not only treats constipation, but also helps in preserving
appetite and improving digestion. Plantago ovata husk (Isapgol) is a well-known bulk
forming laxative. Its property of swelling by absorbing water turns it into a bulk that is
not digestible and hence, is not absorbed by the intestine. This bulk of indigestible
residue provides the mechanical stimuli for evacuation of the bowel.

Trigonella foenum graecum provides bulk to the waste and decreases the colon transit
time from 20-36 hrs to 2-6 hrs. It is a gentle and safe laxative that helps reduce the
risk of colo-rectal cancer and other bowel disorders often associated with low-fiber
diet.

MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Psyllium contains up to 70% of soluble and 30% of insoluble fibers. Recent study
report of USFDA state that regular intake of Psyllium husk effectively reduces
constipation, cholesterol level, diabetes and can be used in colon cancer.

When Psyllium husk is mixed with water or other liquids like fruit juice, it forms a
gel-like gelatinous mass It moves down the digestive organ soaking up toxins and
harmful residues, it flushes out toxins of the body through stools.

The Soluble fibers content of Psyllium husk has ability to bind with bile acids - an
important player in digestion of fats. This process lowers circulating blood
cholesterol level, by excretion of those fats.

USAGE:

IN CONSTIPATION:
Psyllium husk by virtue of its hydrophillic property absorbs moisture from the bowel
and thus forms a bulk. This bulk in turn stretches the colonic wall, thus initiating the
peristaltic movement of the colon and expulsion of feces. Psyllium contains gel-
forming fibers composed of micro-polysaccharides and cellulose. This plant starch is
hydrophilic in nature; hence they add moisture and bulk to stool in colon. The gel like
starch softens the feces making hardened stool easier to be eliminated without any
kind of damage to the bowelwall.
The mucilage forms a temporary gelatinous layer that protects intestinal walls from
irritation caused by caustic material in the intestine, thus allowing the repair of
adjoining tissues.

IN DIARRHOEA:
The mucilage contents forms bond with water and hence creates a surface of mucous
membrane, forming a sticky mass, which are not easily distributed. Hence this avoids
formation of watery outlet during diarrhea and dysentery.

IN CHOLESTEROL CONTROL:
Psyllium has cellulose fiber, which is responsible for decreasing the absorption of
cholesterol into the blood stream. It also gives the feeling of fullness without adding
calories.

IN DIABETES:
The fiber content reduces the release of dietary sugar from the digestive tract into the
blood stream, thus assisting in the stabilization of blood sugar level.

IN COLON CANCER:
Insoluble fiber content dilutes cancer-causing bile acids or moves feces out of the
colon more quickly; hence it reduces contact-time of feces in digestive system
reducing chances of producing carcinogens (cancer-causing substance).

PHARMACOLOGY :
Adhatoda vasica (Vasa) is a good expectorant. It liquefies the thick viscid mucus,
which is then easily expectorated out. It possesses a slight but persistent
bronchodilator action, which proves to be very helpful in chronic cough conditions,
especially in cases of bronchial asthma. Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi) is also a proven
anti-allergic which possesses action similar to disodium chromoglycate. It is also an
adaptogen and an anti-microbial too. This improves the host defense mechanism.
Solanum surrentes (Kantakari) is an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, thus helps
reduce inflammation in conditions like pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis etc. Piper
longum (Pippali) liquefies the thick cough. It is also a Rasayana, which builds up the
immunity of respiratory system so as to reduce the recurrent infections of respiratory
tract. Glycyrrhiza glabra (Yashtimadhu) is used extensively as a mild expectorant
and anti-inflammatory agent. It is also used in throat infections Terminalia belerica
(Baheda) and Hedychium spicatum (Shathi) show potent anti-inflammatory,
bronchodilatory, expectorant and anti-spasmodic effect against bronchial spasm
induced by histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine. Clerodendron serratum have significant
antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activities in animal models. The

PHARMACOLOGY:
Protective and therapeutic effects of Picrorrhiza kurroa have been shown against
liver damage by many investigators in diverse models of liver injury in animals. The
crude extract as well as the active principle has been shown to protect the liver from
injury due to carbon tetrachloride, paracetamol, and alcohol. Marked bile promoting
action has been shown in dogs. Anti-inflammatory action and reduction in mast cell
degranulation have also been demonstrated. Eclipta alba protected guinea pigs
against the mortality induced by CCl4 liver damage. Reduction in serum transaminase
observed. Histopathology of liver also showed a reduction in parenchymal damage.
The hepatoprotective effect of Tinospora cordifolia extract was demonstrated in CCl4
induced liver damage in rats. While acute damage was enhanced by prior exposure
to the drug, it proved effective in the prevention of fibrosis, and in stimulating
regeneration in hepatic tissue. Phyllanthus niruri-pretreated rats showed no signs of
liver necrosis and no hepatic cellular degeneration was seen. This confirms its
hepatoprotective effect. Bacopa monieri helps us give up bad habits and addictions

of all types. It aids in recovery from alcoholism or drug abuse. For this reason it is
added to hepatoprotective formulation. Combined action of all the herbs cures

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common metabolic disorders affecting mankind.
The number of diabetic patients in the world is increasing in an alarming proportion
and is now considered as one of the major diseases responsible for number of deaths
in the world.
Diabetes is due to lack of insulin or its ineffectiveness in the body. There are two types
of diabetes, one is Type I, which is also known as insulin dependant, and the other is
Type II, which is non-insulin dependant.
Another words Type I diabetes has to be treated by insulin which is given by injection
where as Type II diabetes can be treated with other oral anti-diabetic drugs.

PHARMACOLOGY:
Gymnema sylvestre (MeshashrIngi) is reported to have anti diabetic, hypolipidaemic
(lowering triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL & VLDL) and anti-atherosclerotic property.
Hypoglycemic effect is proved in animals as well as in human subjects.
Recent scientific investigation on Gymnemic acid has upheld its effectiveness in both
Type I and Type II diabetes. Gymnema sylvestre regenerates or revitalizes the insulin-
producing beta cells of the pancreas and thereby it controls diabetes.
Tinospora cordifolia (Guduchi) plant extract caused reduction in fasting blood
sugars in rabbits and rats. The bitter fraction of the aqueous extract caused
insignificant reduction in blood sugar levels, but significantly inhibited (48.4%)
adrenaline-induced hyperglycemia. The hypoglycemic effect was marked and
significant.
Tinospora cordifolia extract caused reduction of blood sugar in alloxan-induced
hyperglycemic rats and rabbits in the dose of 400 mg/kg body weight.
Pterocarpus Marsupium (Vijaysara) has a long history of use in India as a treatment
for diabetes. A potent flavonoid (Pterostilbene) in this tree has been shown to help
regenerate beta cells in the pancreas as well. Researchers had studied the effects of
this herb on 97 individuals with blood sugar problems and were amazed to find that it
helped control blood sugar levels in 69% of them.
Trigonella foenum graecum (Methi) has demonstrated significant anti-diabetic
effects in experimental and clinical studies. An amino acid (4–hydroxyisoleucine)
extracted from Fenugreek seed, exhibits an interesting glucose dependent insulin
stimulating activity. Two studies in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported
that Fenugreek improves glucose tolerance in both Type I and Type II diabetes.
Regular intake of fenugreek stimulates pancreatic function. In patients with relatively
mild diabetes, fenugreek significantly reduced both fasting and post meal glucose
levels and healthy subjects experienced no change in glucose levels.

desirable for their height. In ayurveda, Charak Samhita describes eight different types
of bodies that are disease-prone. Out of these, the obese body is described as
‘Medoroga’ or the one afflicted with the most diseases and troubles.

PHARMACOLOGY:
Hydroxycitrate [HCA], a natural substance extracted from the rind of the fruit of
Garcinia cambogia (Vrikshamla) is a potent, competitive inhibitor of citrate lyase, an
enzyme that is crucial for regulating fat metabolism. The fat burning action of (-) HCA
seems to reduce the free fatty acid levels in the blood. Thereby the fat metabolism
gets corrected. As per Sushruta, Commiphora mukul (Guggulu) is very useful in the
treatment of obesity. The research studies on Guggulu and its purified fractions
validated by revealing hypocholesterolemic, hypolipidaemic and anti-atherosclerotic
properties.
Aloe vera (Kumari) is increasingly being recognized as one of the best agents to
promote weight loss. Aloe vera stimulates the metabolic rate in liver cells helping to
burn more energy. The activity of each cell rises and more heat is generated. The
increasing amount of fuel required for this task is derived from fat and carbohydrate
stores of the body. This has a direct effect on the body mass index. Aloe vera also has

PHARMACOLOGY:
Boswellia serrata (Salai guggul) has a marked anti-inflammatory and anti arthritic
activity. Rheumatic disorders in many situations demand the same anti-inflammatory
effect. Boswellia serrata in a dose range of 25-200 mg/kg orally displayed dose-
related anti-inflammatory effect in variety of test models. In acute carrageenin tests it
showed 27-46% inhibition of paw edema in rats and mice. In chronic test of
formaldehyde-induced arthritis, it exhibited 45-67% anti-arthritic activity in a similar
dose range. Curcuma longa (Haldi) Water extract showed significant anti-
inflammatory activity in acute edema. The alcoholic extract of Moringa oleifera
(Shigru) root bark showed anti-inflammatory activity against formalin-induced rat paw
edema, cotton pellet implantation and granuloma pouch in oral doses in albino rats. It
also showed analgesic activity.

Gingerol from Zingiber officinale (Sunthi) possesses anti-inflammatory, and

analgesic properties. This formulation inhibits production of prostaglandins and
leukotrienes that are responsible for pain and inflammation.

An additional feature of Contudol is its ‘disease modifying’ effect. This means that it
slows down the progress of disease, stops further damage to the joint and peripheral
structures to help the joint recover on its own.
