Longtime Aberdeen American News Editor to Receive SDNA Award

Cindy Eikamp, who worked in the newsroom at the Aberdeen American News for more
than 36 years before retiring in 2010 as executive editor/vice president, will receive the
South Dakota Newspaper Association Distinguished Service Award during the group’s
upcoming convention.

She will be honored April 8 in Brookings at SDNA’s 129th annual convention.

Eikamp, a Britton native and South Dakota State University journalism graduate, began her
career at the American News in 1974. Through the years she led the news coverage and
reporting at the state’s third-largest daily newspaper.

“Cindy Eikamp has been a solid rock for not only the Aberdeen American News for 36
years but for the newspaper business in South Dakota,” SDNA President Doug Card said.

“Her professionalism and love for the industry has served as an example for her peers and
an inspiration for those who will follow in her footsteps. South Dakota Newspaper
Association is proud to recognize her for those years of distinguished service,” said Card,
publisher of the Britton Journal.

Eikamp and the American News won numerous awards through the years for reporting,
writing, editing, photography and newspaper design. In 1996, the newspaper won a
prestigious Silver Medal in the Society of Newspaper Design’s international competition
that drew more than 10,000 entries.

Under Eikamp’s direction, the American News published many comprehensive news series
and special reports covering a variety of topics, including water development and excessive
government spending and fraud.

Eikamp was elected president of the South Dakota Associated Press Managing Editors
Association in 1998. She also served as president of the Aberdeen Boys and Girls Club.
The SDNA Distinguished Service Award is given to someone who has demonstrated
outstanding service to the newspaper profession in South Dakota.

South Dakota Newspaper Association, based in Brookings, represents the state’s 130 weekly
and daily newspapers.
