The Premier Issue of The Gonzaga University Training and Development Catalog

Gonzaga is often praised for its outstanding faculty, who continually push the boundaries of science
and scholarship, and our gifted students, who inspire us all with their curiosity and commitment to

you–our highly competent and committed staff.

Gonzaga employees perform diverse roles in support of our world-class educational programs. For

Security presence, manages complex finances, oversees capital improvement projects, operates our

We are sending you the premier issue of our annual Training and Development Catalog. This new
publication is a comprehensive desk reference guide which features the full inventory of classes,
programs and development services made available by the Human Resources Department throughout
the coming year. Please explore the expanded menu of development opportunities offered by Gonzaga
University to employees at all levels.

In our never-ending quest to be a trusted resource to the Gonzaga community, we are committed to

General Information
Human Resources has designed this Training and Development
Catalog to provide professional development and enrichment
opportunities to all employees. Courses and programs are
offered in areas of communication, self-development, health
and safety, wellness, leadership and management and
customized programs for individuals, teams, departments and
divisions.

The training and professional development options available


are designed to strengthen competencies essential for peak
performance, increase understanding of and ability to live and
work in accordance with our mission values, create a shared
language to work effectively with others, build community and
enhance informal professional support networks.

Instructors are generally members of the Human Resources staff.


On occasion we may partner with subject-matter experts from
University staff, faculty or outside consultants.

the unpredictable consequences of a struggling economy, we are
facing unprecedented change.

These challenges require community members to have both


technical understanding and strong interpersonal skills.
Therefore, a more holistic approach to training and professional
development will be taken by providing opportunities for all
employees–faculty, managers and individual contributors.

Understanding Your Own and Others’ Social Styles


Gain awareness of your own preferred social style and how
this style is often perceived by others. Learn how to waste less
time trying to resolve unsatisfactory relationships and more time
leveraging the strengths you and others bring to the table.

Managing Difficult Conversations
We tend to avoid difficult conversations with co-workers, friends
and family members until we can avoid them no longer. These
dreaded conversations, when they finally do occur, often cause
hard feelings and damaged relationships, strengthening the
natural tendency to avoid them. Discover a pragmatic approach
to engaging in difficult conversations with others.

Managers should note that some of these course topics are redundant with
options listed under “Leadership and Management Opportunities” on pages 8
and 9. Managers should attend the sessions designed for them.

Improving Time-Management and Organization


This session provides practical time management techniques
for identifying key time wasters, setting boundaries, handling
interruptions and maximizing productivity. Participants will learn
how to incorporate these techniques into their daily activities by
setting goals and developing a daily action plan that promotes
focus, discipline and creativity.

Developing Intercultural Competence


Participants learn how to make diversity a resource that enhances
creativity, effectiveness and educational excellence among faculty,
staff and students. Beginning with greater awareness of their
own cultural self, participants learn how to increase their personal
effectiveness in a multicultural world.

Understanding Generational Diversity


Understand and learn to communicate effectively with all four
generations in the workplace today–Traditionalist, Baby Boomer,
Generation X and Millennials. Recognize the stereotypes that
prevent us from understanding a different generation. Identify
“clashpoints” that cause employee dissatisfaction and attrition.

Giving Effective Presentations and Public Speaking


All-Employee Development

Writing and delivering effective presentations can be a challenge.


In fact, in a poll taken about what people dread most, fear of
public speaking was number one–ahead of fear of heights,
closed spaces, spiders, and even death. This segment deals
with specific ways to prepare and deliver polished presentations.
Topics include: how to make nervousness work for you rather
than against you, how to grab and keep an audience’s attention,
effective delivery, ways to remember material without memorizing
and utilizing various audio/visual aids.

Understanding Performance Management
from the Employee Perspective
Participants learn and understand the dynamic new approach to
performance management being implemented at Gonzaga. This
session covers the principles and guidelines for performance
management as well as the importance of having a common
rating scale and shared language as the foundation for developing
strategies on behalf of individuals and the institution. In addition,
specifics of the Gonzaga performance review components,
interpreting the rating scale and the evaluation process are
discussed.

Dealing with Change and Transitions


Understanding change from a personal perspective builds a
foundation for managing change in broader contexts. This
workshop helps you understand how change occurs for individuals
and for organizations, identify attitudes and skills needed to manage

Resolving Conflict
Tension and conflict are natural and necessary for any team to
succeed. Learn how to work together through the inevitable
conflict in order to reach agreement while honoring and
maintaining relationships.

Strategic Leadership Program (SLP)


The Strategic Leadership Program is designed specifically
for managers and supervisors in higher education. This
three-day retreat focuses on essential leadership skills such
as personal style, team-work, time management, delegation,
change management and planning for the future.

Performance Management Training for Managers


Supervisors learn and understand the dynamic new
approach to performance management being implemented at
Gonzaga. This session covers the principles and guidelines
for performance management as well as the importance of

foundation for developing strategies on behalf of individuals
and the institution. In addition, specifics of the Gonzaga
performance evaluation components, interpreting the rating
scale and the evaluation process are discussed. Participants
have an opportunity to practice using the new form in a case
study exercise.

Leadership and Management Opportunities

Management Development Program (MDP) I and II*


This program covers the legal and procedural aspects of
managing today’s workforce and how to apply this knowledge
effectively within Gonzaga’s unique mission and work
environment. The Management Development Program helps
minimize liability for you and the University by providing you with
a complete understanding of your roles and responsibilities as a
manager and therefore as an “agent” of the University.

Adaptive Leadership–
“Leading Others Through Change”*

Leadership and Management


This session will provide a framework and tools for anyone,
from supervisors to executives, whose responsibility includes
helping people deal successfully with organizational changes
and making those changes work. The lesson will focus
primarily on helping employees manage the transitions
associated with the University’s move to a performance-
based pay compensation system. However, the principles are
applicable to any change process one encounters.

Executive Coaching: Short-term one-on-one focus


with individual leaders to develop skills and strategies to
communicate more effectively, become better leaders and
succeed at what they are committed to accomplishing.

Environmental Health and Safety
Emergency Preparedness
This course provides basic information on preparation for an
emergency and safety during and after an emergency. ZagAlert,
the University emergency notification system, is also covered.
Instructor: Dennis Hansen
Time: 1 hour

CPR and AED for the Workplace


This course has practical demonstrations and exercises in
performing rescue breathing and CPR with an Automated External
Defibrillator (AED) for adults. The course covers the signs and
symptoms of a heart attack and stroke and how to assess the
victim, basic life support procedures (assess, alert , attend) and
foreign body airway obstructions.

Workplace Violence Prevention


This course teaches employees practical skills to prevent and
respond properly to threats, abuse and violent behavior that
employees may face from other employees, customers, vendors or
strangers in their workplace.

program? Environmental Health and Safety will customize any of the listed safety programs

General Safety Training


Courses are offered on all University safety programs. This includes and Safety
ergonomics, office safety, chemical hygiene, confined space entry,
fall protection, hazard communication, lockout/tagout (energy
control), personal protective equipment (PPE), slip, trip and fall
prevention and welding and cutting protection.

Health Management
Gonzaga Wellness Program
The Gonzaga Wellness program is designed to improve the
health and well-being of Gonzaga University employees and
their families through health management programs that
include early intervention and activities that support positive
lifestyle changes. These result in improved employee morale
and health-care-related cost savings. The Wellness Program
includes: Walking Works, fitness classes, personal health
assessments, flu shots, ergonomic assessments, monthly
speaker presentations, Health Matters Newsletter, smoking
cessation programs, ZAGFit and the Benefits and Health Fair.

Wellness Fitness Classes


The Gonzaga Employee Wellness Committee sponsors Mind/
Body Fitness classes for fall, spring, and summer semesters.
All employee Wellness Committee sponsored classes are
open to Gonzaga regular employees and spouses only.
Classes vary based on employee interest and instructor
availability. Classes generally offered include: Basic Yoga for
Fitness, Pilates, 30-Minutes Fitness Challenge, etc.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)


Life presents opportunities and challenges. The EAP program,
through Hartford’s Ability Assist, is offered to employees
and their families to help cope with life, from job pressures,
relationships and retirement planning to finding child care,
coping with grief or the impact of a disability. Employees are
entitled to up to 5 FREE confidential sessions per incident, per
calendar year.

Health Management
Weight Watchers at Work
The Weight Watchers at Work program is tailored to the needs
of working people. It is an ongoing weekly lunchtime program
dedicated to inspire and help employees adopt a healthier way
to live. The program teaches participants how to lose weight
and keep it off by living, not dieting. The program runs in 12-week
sessions during the year. For more information, contact Jamie

ZAGFit
The ZAGFit Program is designed to recognize benefits-eligible
faculty, staff and administrators who make the extra effort to take
actions to best ensure health and fitness. The goal of this program
is to create and sustain healthy lifestyles by making one conscious,
positive choice after another, day after day.

The ZAGFit program promotes employee wellness through a


voluntary program which offers incentives. To be eligible for the
program incentives in academic year 2008-2009, you must complete
the following five ZAGFit components during the program period:

1) Personal Health Assessment (PHA)


2) Be smoke/tobacco free
3) Preventive medical checkup within the last 12 months
4) Knowledge of personal health statistics

5) Participate in two different approved Wellness
Committee activities

By participating in the ZAGFit Wellness Program and completing the activity


form by the deadline employees are rewarded–not only with good health and
well-being–but with a cash incentive and a FREE ZAGFit T-shirt.

Retirement Planning
Participating in the GU Retirement Plan
This workshop is designed for employees who are not yet enrolled
in the Gonzaga 403B Retirement Program. The goal is to explain
the benefits of enrolling in the tax-free retirement savings plan.
The program reviews the highlights of the benefits plan and
investment options available through Fidelity Investments and
TIAA-CREF. Topics include eligibility, employer contributions,
investment options, loan and hardship withdrawal options and IRS
contribution limits. The program also reviews basic investment
principles, compounding and the advantages of starting early (time
value of money). One-hour workshops are offered every other
month.

Retirement Planning Program


This workshop is designed for employees age 50 and older who
may be thinking about retirement over the next few years. The goal
is to discuss how to prepare for retirement and includes information
presented by several experts in their field. Topics include financial
planning and distribution options; Social Security; Medicare and
Medicare supplement insurance; estate planning; long term care;
housing and living; leisure time activities and how to make the
transition to your new lifestyle. The full-day program is offered
annually.

Investment Strategies
Group Informational Sessions
These informational workshops are designed for
employees seeking general information on savings
through our tax shelter retirement program and
investment strategies. Representatives from Fidelity
Investments and TIAA-CREF discuss topics such as
current market conditions, investing during volatile
times and basic investment principles. Topics depend
on current financial interests. One-hour workshops are
offered quarterly.

Individual Sessions
Employees are encouraged to contact their
representative from Fidelity Investments or TIAA-
CREF to schedule an annual review of their investment
strategy and personal financial plan. Representatives are
available monthly. Employees may call their provider to
schedule an appointment.

Employee Orientation
New Employee Orientation (NEO)
This program provides new employees with valuable information
about the University and the services and programs available to
employees. Presentations by a variety of campus representatives
include an overview of Gonzaga University, its Jesuit, Catholic and
humanistic mission tradition, the history and structure of the GU
campus, payroll information, Staff Assembly and other services
and resources available to employees. The complete benefits
package is covered in detail, including University health and
insurance options, disability benefits and retirement programs.

Eligible employees must sign up for health insurance and disability


benefits programs within their period of initial eligibility, that is,
31 days from the date they became eligible for benefits, regardless
of when they attend the orientation session.

Benefits Only Orientation


This program covers the University benefits package only and is a

repeat of the benefits portion of the full orientation. This session is
offered for employees whose period of initial eligibility to enroll in
benefits will end before the next available full orientation. Topics
include health and insurance options, disability benefits and
retirement programs.

Staff Bios
Dan Berryman is the assistant vice president.
He has overall responsibility for employment,
compensation, benefits, affirmative action,
training and development, employee relations,
personnel policies and procedures, safety
programs, workers compensation, and health
management. Prior to coming to Gonzaga in 2006,
Dan spent 28 years in the human resources field in
electronics, transportation and higher education.

Jamie Burchett is the benefits and safety


coordinator. She is responsible for handling
day-to-day benefits administration, coordinating
special projects for Benefits and Environmental
Health & Safety, overseeing the commute trip
reduction program, and assisting with safety
claims and leave administration. Jamie joined
the department in 2000.

Jamie Cockerham is the employment


coordinator. Her responsibilities include
screening and processing applications,
coordinating the recruiting and hiring
processes, and ensuring consistency with
Gonzaga’s Mission, EEO/Affirmative Action, and
diversity initiatives by providing support to the
Employment & HRIS Specialist. Jamie joined the
department in 2008.

Staff Bios
Dennis Hansen is the safety programs
manager. He is responsible for development and
implementation of employee safety programs,
building and grounds safety, chemical hygiene
safety, hazardous waste disposal, safety training,
ergonomics and emergency preparedness. Prior
to coming to Gonzaga in 1996, he developed
hazardous waste operations and emergency
preparedness plans for large companies in the
northwest.

Heather Murray is the associate director. She


is responsible for compensation administration,
job evaluations and requisitions, wage and hour
compliance, and oversees the employee relations,
employment and HRIS functions. Prior to coming
to Gonzaga in 2000, Heather worked in the human
resource management field for an electronics
manufacturing firm in Spokane.

Tracy Kelly is the employment and information


system specialist. Her responsibilities include non-
faculty employment and hiring, as well as Human
Resources information systems and workflow.
Tracy joined the department in 2001.

Debby LaRocco is the benefits manager. She is


responsible for the management of the employee
benefit programs such as the retirement,
medical, dental, life and disability plans. This
includes making sure the plans are in compliance

with government regulations, are competitive
with area businesses, are fiscally sound and
meet the needs of our staff and faculty. Prior
to coming to Gonzaga in 2008, Debby managed
the benefits program of a non-profit healthcare
institution. She has worked in the benefits field
for over 20 years.

Melissa Schlenker is the office assistant. She
is responsible for answering general Human
Resource questions, assisting employees with
completing paperwork, and providing general
clerical support for the Human Resource team.
Melissa joined the department in 2008.

Gretchen Stoup is the employee relations


manager. She helps Gonzaga staff navigate the
sensitive topic of employee relations including
employee engagement and retention, coaching,
corrective action and exit interviews. Gretchen
works with staff on conflict resolution, grievance
processes, policy and procedure interpretation
and training on employee-relations related topics.
Gretchen is serving as the Peer Advisor Human
Resources liaison. Prior to coming to Gonzaga
in 2008, Gretchen served as human resources
manager, corporate recruiter and store manager
for a large retailer.

Jason Swain is the manager of employee and


organizational development. He is responsible
for leadership and management development,
employee professional development, diversity
awareness training and provides internal
consulting services for individuals, teams and
departments on a variety of issues impacting
organizational effectiveness. Prior to coming to
Gonzaga in 2004, Jason had been guiding teams
and mid- to large-size, publicly held companies as
well as non-profit organizations for over 10 years.
