In January 1940 the 1st Feldersatz Battalion became the 3/336th

Infantry Regiment (IR)1 (161st ID). February 1940 Staff/1st IR and 2/43rd
IR joined the 504th IR (8th Wave). On 9/21/40 the 3/1st, 3/22nd &
3/43rd IR detached to the 121st ID (11th Wave). In May 1942 the 3/1,
3/22 & 2/43rd IR were disbanded, leaving the division with only six
battalions. 11/12/42, 22nd IR became the 22nd Fusilier Battalion (A.A.).
On 9/22/44 the 3rd Battalions were reraised. In November 1944 the
division's regiments reorganized and renamed as follows:

On 10/15/39 the 2/92nd became the 2/Grossdeutschland IR and the

remainder of the 92nd IR was demotorized and sent tot he 60th ID. In
1940 a motorcycle battalion was formed in the division.

On 10/5/40 the division was attached to the 12th Panzer division.

The 3/5th Motorized IR was sent to the 4th Panzer division as the
34th Motorcycle Battalion and the 3/25th IR became the 30th Motorcy-
cle Battalion in the 20th (Motorized) ID. The 2/2nd AR became the
independent 154th Heavy Artillery Battalion. On 1/10/41 the division
was merged into the 12th Panzer Division.
3rd Infantry Division: Mobilized on 8/1/39 with:

In January 1940 it detached the 3rd Feldersatz Battalion to the

3/307th IR (163rd ID). In February 1940 the 2/29th was detached to
become the 1/510th Infantry Regiment.
3rd Motorized Infantry Division: Formed on 10/27/40 from the 3rd ID by

detaching the 2/50th IR, 3/3rd AR, 1/39th AR to the 123rd ID. A new
3/3rd (heavy) AR ment was formed from the 628th Heavy Artillery
Battalion. The division was organized as follows:

On 3/15/42 the 63rd Reconnaissance battalion and the 53rd

Motorcycle Battalion were fused. The 3rd AR raised a new 4th Batta-
lion in 1942 from the 312nd Army Flak Artillery Battalion. In January
1943 the Division was destroyed at Stalingrad.
On 3/1/44 the division was reformed in France by redesignating
the 386th (Motorized) ID and joining to it the few surviving fragments
of the old division. It had:

3rd Panzer Grenadier Division: Formed on 5/23/43 from the 3rd Motor-
ized ID. The infantry regiments were converted to Motorized Grenadier
Regiments on 10/15/42. On 4/28/44 the Division was reorganized. On
12/1/44 the two Motorized Grenadier Regiments became Panzer Grenadier
Regiments. The division was destroyed in the 1945 battles for the
Rhur.
4th Infantry Division: Formed October 1934 in Dresden. Mobilized on

8/24/39 with:

January 1940 the 4th Feldersatz Battalion was detached to

become 1/440th IR (164th ID). in February 1940 the staff and 2/52nd
IR were detached to become the 513th IR (294th ID - 8th Wave). On
8/15/40 the division was redesignated as the 14th Panzer division with
the transfer of the 52nd IR to the 18th Panzer division. The 10th IR
was renamed the 108th IR as there was already a 10th Schützen Regi-
ment. The 3/10th became the 3/156th IR (16th ID), the 1/103rd became
the 1/111th in the 11th Panzer Division. the artillery remained un-
changed and the conversion was completed by 12/12/40.
5th Infantry Division: Formed October 1934. Mobilized on 8/25/39 with:

In January 1940 the 5th Feldersatz Battalion was renamed the

3/324th IR (163rd ID). February 1940 the staff and 2/56th IR were
transferred to the 292nd ID (8th Wave). In October the Staff 14th IR,
3/14th, 3/56th and 3/75th were transferred to the 125th ID. These
detachments were replaced with newly formed units. On 12/1/41, after
heavy losses in Russia, the division was reformed (in France) into a
Light ID equipped for low mountain warfare. The 14th IR was detached
to the 78th ID and both other regiments became Jäger Regiments.
5th Jäger Division: Formed on 7/6/42 with:

6th Infantry Division: Mobilized on 8/26/39 with:

January 1940 the 6th Feldersatz Battalion became the 1/362nd IR

(196th ID). February 1940 the 2/37th IR became the 3/503rd IR (290th
ID) of the 8th Wave and in December 1940 a third of the division was
detached (Staff 18th IR, 3/18th, 3/37th, 3/58th) to the 106th Division
(12th Wave). The battalions were replaced by an order of 10/2/43
which ordered the reforming of the 3/18th, 3/37th, and 2/58th and the
formation of an reconnaissance battalion. The division now had:

6th Grenadier Division: Formed on 7/25/44 from the 552nd Grenadier

Division (29th Wave) and the debris of the old 6th Division with:

6th Volks-Grenadier-Division: Formed 10/9/44. The Division Fusilier

Company was formed into the 6th Division Fusilier Battalion. The
1006th Sturmgeschütz Battalion and 6th Flak Company were used to
form the missing 6th Panzerjäger Battalion. Destroyed in January
1945 on the Vistula River.
6th Infantry Division: Formed on 3/10/45 with parts of the destroyed

88th and 291st Infantry Divisions. It contained:

1/43rd Artillery Regiment
In January 1940 the 7th Feldersatz Battalion became the 2/339th

IR (167th ID) of the 7th Wave. In February 1940 the 2/19th was as-
signed to the 527th IR (298th ID) of the 8th Wave. In December 1940
a third of the battalion was detached to the 97th Light ID (Staff/,
3/19th IR, 3/61st and 3/62nd IR). The division was reorganized by the
order of 10/2/42 and had:

The was taken into Russian captivity at the end of the war.

In January 1940 the 8th Feldersatz Battalion became the 2/442nd

IR (168th ID). In February the staff of the 38th IR and the 2/84th IR
were incorporated into the 525th IR (298th ID) of the 8th Wave. In
December 1940 a third of the division (Staff/28th IR, 3/28th and
3/84th IR) was transferred to the 102nd ID (12th Wave). The detached
components were rebuilt and the divisions remained unchanged.
8th Light Infantry Division: Formed on 21/1/41 from the 8th Infantry
Regiment. It had:

The division passed into Russian captivity in 1945.

In January 1940 the 9th Feldersatz Battalion was used to form the
378th IR (169th ID). In February 1940 the 2/36th was detached to the
528th IR (299th ID), 8th Wave. In October 1940 a third of the division
was transferred to form the 129th ID (11th Wave). This included the
Staff/,3/36th, 3/57th, and 3/116th. The units detached were reformed.
On 5/19/42 the 1/45th AR became the 4/9th AR. On 10/23/43 the divi-
sion was reformed into a new type of division. The 3rd Battalions of
all regiments were disbanded and the 9th Fusilier Battalion was
formed. The division had:

In August 1944 the division, part of Army South Ukraine, was de-
stroyed and on 9 October it was disbanded.
9th Volks Grenadier Division: Formed on 10/13/44 in Esberg Denmark

from the Schatten-Division Dennewitz (584th) of the 32nd Wave. It
had:

The 9th Division Fusilier Company was reformed into a battal-

ion in 1945 and, while serving in the Eifel, the division passed into
American captivity.

In January 1940 the 10th Feldersatz Battalion became the 3/351st

IR (183rd ID) of the 7th Wave. In February the Staff/85th IR was
transferred to the 296th ID (8th Wave) and a new staff was formed.
10th Motorized Infantry Division: Formed on 11/15/40 from the 10th ID.
The 85th IR was transformed into the 85th Mountain Regiment and
transferred to the 5th Mountain Division along with the 3/10th AR.
The division then had:

ized infantry regiments were redesignated as motorized grenadier
regiments.
10th Panzer Grenadier Division: Formed on 6/13/43 from the 10th

Motorized ID. With this transformation, it consisted of:

The division was destroyed in August 1944 and formally disband-

ed. It was reformed on 10/15/44 by Army group A. Its new organiza-
tion was:

110th Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion
The newly reorganization was sent into battle in January 1945 on

the Vistula. By 2/6/45 it was reduced to the force of a Kampfgruppe.
A Sturmgeschütz battalion replaced the panzer battalion, it had only 3
panzer grenadier battalions, a panzerjäger battalion and a motorized
artillery battalion. The division was captured by the Russians around
Olmütz and Deutsch Brod.
10th Bicycle Jäger Brigade: Formed in January 1945 with:

(161st ID). In February 1940 the 2/44th IR became the 1/506th IR of
the 291st ID (8th Wave). In October 1940 one third of the division
was detached to form the 126th ID (Staff/,3/2nd IR, 3/23rd IR and
3/44th IR). Those units detached were replaced with newly formed
units. In the summer of 1942 the 3/23rd IR was detached. The 3/2nd
IR went in January 1944 and the 2/44th went in September 1944. The
reconnaissance battalion was became the 11th Division Fusilier Batta-
lion (AA) and the division was restructured as follows:

1/,2/23rd Grenadier Regiment
In 1945 the division passed in to Russian captivity in Courland.

In January 1940 the 12th Feldersatz Battalion was used to form

the 3/303rd IR (162nd ID) of the 7th Wave. In February the 2/48th
became the 1/508th IR (292nd ID) of the 8th Wave and in December 1940
a third of the division (Staff,3/27th IR, 3/48th IR and 3/89th IR) were
transferred to the 110th ID. The detached units were reformed and
replaced. In October the infantry regiments became "grenadier Regi-
ments" and on 12/20/42 the 27th IR became the 27th Fusilier Regiment.
On 10/2/43 the Division was reorganized into a new division. The
2/27th, 3/48th and 1/89th IR were disbanded. The 3/89th became the
1/89th and the reconnaissance battalion was transformed into the
division fusilier battalion. In July 1944 the division was destroyed
while serving with Army Group Middle.
The division was reformed on 8/3/44 as the 12th Grenadier Divi-
sion (30th Wave). The 1/48th AR was, at that time, redesignated as
the 4/12th AR.
12th Volks Grenadier Division: On 10/9/44 the 12th ID was redesignat-

ed as the 12th Volks Grenadier Division. While by Aachen the 473rd
Reserve Grenadier Battalion (526th ID) and the VIII Luftwaffe Fortress
Battalion were absorbed into the division.
1/,2/,3/27th Fusilier Regiment

On 3 November 1944 it absorbed the Landwehr Fortress Vattalion VIII.

The division taken prisoner in the Ruhr pocket.
13th Motorized Infantry Division: Mobilized on 8/18/39 with:
1/,2/,3/33rd Motorized Infantry Regiment

13th Division (Einheiten) Service Units, including
On 10/18/39 the 33rd Motorized IR was transferred to the 4th

Panzer Division and became the 33rd Schützen Regiment on 4/1/40. The
1/33rd became the 3/2nd Schützen Regiment of the 2nd Panzer Division.
The 1/13th AR became the 2/74th AR, the 3/13th AR became the 1/13th
AR, and the 1/49th became the 3/13th AR. The 43rd Motorcycle Batta-
lion was newly formed. The division had:

On 10/11/40 the division became the 13th Panzer Division.

In January 1940 the 14th Feldersatz Battalion became the 2/382nd

IR (164th ID). In February the 2/101st IR became the 1/514th IR (294th
ID) and was replaced. On 10/15/40 the 14th ID became motorized. On
3/15/41 the 101st IR became the 101st Schützen Regiment and was as-
signed to the 18th Panzer Division. the 1/101st IR remained with the
14th ID and became the 54th Motorcycle Battalion. The 2/14th AR
became the 1/88th AR. To replace with the 3/14th became the 2/14th
and the 1/50th became the 3/14th. The division then had:

54th Motorcycle Battalion
1/,2/,3/14th Motorized Artillery Regiment
In 1943 the division was ordered to become the 14th Panzer

Grenadier Division. During that conversion the 54th Motorcycle Bat-
talion was to become the 114th Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion. The
conversion did not occur and the division was de-motorized, reverting
to the 14th ID. On 9/1/43 the division was reorganized. The reorgani-
zation was complete on 12/1/43. The 101st Panzer Grenadier Regiment,
from the disbanded 18th Panzer Division, was reformed and reassigned
to the division. The 1/101st was reformed from the 3/53rd, the 3/11
was disbanded and the 14th Reconnaissance Battalion (the former 114th
Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion) became the 14th Fusilier Battalion.
The 4/14th AR was formed from the 2/87th AR. The division now had:

On 10/18/44 the 1068th and 1069th Grenadier Regiments and the

1036th Kampf-Marsch (Battle March) Battalion were absorbed into the
division. In 1945 the division was taken by the Russians by Stuthof.
14th Landwehr Division: Formed on 8/26/39 as the only landwehr divi-

sion formed. It had:

On 1/1/40 the 14th Landwehr Division was reorganized into the

205th ID (3rd Wave). The 40th, 59th and 182nd Landwehr Regiments
became, respectively, the 335th, 353rd and 358th IRs. The 33rd
Landwehr Regiment became the 326th IR (198th ID - 7th Wave) on
1/17/40.

3/51st Artillery Regiment
In January 1940 the 15th Feldersatz battalion became the 3/392nd

IR (169th Div). In February 1940 the 2/81st IR became the 1/530th IR
(299th ID). On 11/20/40 a third of the division was detached (3/81st,
3/88th & 3/106th IR) and used to form the 134th ID. All detached
battalions were reformed. In May 1942 the division, which had de-
tached five battalions, moved to France and was reorganized. On
10/2/43 the division was reorganized and the 3/81st, 1/88th, and
2/106th were disbanded and the 15th Reconnaissance Battalion became
the 15th Fusilier Battalion. The division now had:

In August 1944 the division was destroyed in Russia. On 10/4/44

the division was reformed and consisted of:

In December the 81st Grenadier Regiment was detached to the 1st

Hungarian Army. It was replaced by the 1236th (Führernachwunsch-)
Grenadier Regiment. This regiment changed its number to 81 in March.
After the German capitulation, the division passed into Russian cap-
tivity.
15th Panzer Grenadier Division: Formed on 14 May 1943 as the Sizilien

(Sicilian) Division from various "march" battalions destined for Tunis.
On 5/1/43 the Palermo Panzer Grenadier Regiment (4 bns) was formed
from the 46th, 47th, 48th, 50th and 56th March Battalions. It was
absorbed into the formation of this division. The division had:

On 7/1/43 the division was reorganized into the 15th Panzer
Division (the grenadier regiments becoming panzer grenadier regiments).
On 7/15/43 the name was changed again to the 15th Panzer Grenadier
Division, but the regiments retained the title Panzer Grenadier Regi-
ments instead of Motorized Grenadier Regiments of the other Panzer
Grenadier Divisions. The division had:

During the winter of 1943/44 the 115th Panzer Reconnaissance

Battalion was formed, the 2/33rd Artillery regiment reverted to the
557th Heavy Artillery Battalion and the 4/33rd AR became the 3/44th
AR. The 115th Panzer Grenadier Regiment was disbanded and the 129th
was renamed the 115th. The 215th Panzer Battalion became the 115th
Panzer Battalion. The division had, in April 1944:

The order of 9/23/44 directed the 111th Panzer Brigade be incor-

porated into the division. With the German capitulation, the division
passed into English captivity.

In January 1940 the 16th Feldersatz Battalion was reorganized

into the 3/362nd IR (196th ID). In February 1940 the 2/64th became
the 1/503rd (290th ID) and was replaced. On 8/6/40 the infantry divi-
sion was converted into the 16th Panzer Division. The 60th IR was
detached to the newly forming 16th Motorized ID.
16th Motorized Infantry Division: Formed on 8/6/40.

16th Panzer Grenadier Division: On 6/23/43 the 16th Motorized ID was

renamed as the 16th Panzer Grenadier Division. The 165th Motorcycle
Battalion became the 116th Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion and the
4/146th Panzer AR reverted to the 281st Army Flak Battalion. The
division was used in March 1944 to form the 116th Panzer Division.
16th Infantry Division: The 16th ID was reorganized on 8/4/44 as part

of the 30th Wave in France from the remainder of the 16th Field
Division (L), which had given its infantry up to the 21st Panzer Divi-
sion and the 158th Reserve Division.

In January 1940 the 17th Feldersatz Battalion became the

3/343rd IR (183rd ID). In February 1940 the 2/55th IR became the
3/521st IR and was reformed. In December 1940 one third of the divi-
sion was detached (Staff/,3/21st IR, 3/55th IR and 3/95th IR) and used
to form the 99th Light ID. The detached forces were reformed. On
10/2/43 the Division was reformed and the 3/21st, 3/55th and 2/95th
IR were disbanded. On 7/4/44 the 2/17th was disbanded and replaced
by the 3/173rd AR of the now disbanded 73rd ID. The division was
destroyed in January 1945 along the Vistula. The survivors were lost
in the Neumarket-Breslau Pocket.

The 95th Grenadier Regiment was joined by the 1246th Grenadier

(Führernachwuchs-) Regiment. On 11 March 1945 it absorbed parts of the
destroyed and disbanded 88th and 291st Infantry Divisions.

In January 1940 the 18th Feldersatz Battalion was reorganized

into the 3/417th IR (168th ID).
18th Motorized Infantry Division: Formed on 11/1/40 from the 18th ID.
The 54th IR was transferred to the 100th Light ID, except for the
1/54th IR, which became the 3/51st and the 38th Motorcycle Battalion.

1/56th Motorized Artillery Regiment
Early in 1940 the 69th Motorized IR became the 69th Schützen

egiment of the 10th Panzer Division and the 1/56th AR was renumbered
as the 4/20th AR. In the Fall of 1940 the 1/20th AR was transferred
to the 10th Panzer Division as well, but it was reformed from the
3/20th AR. At the same time the 1/56th AR became the 3/20th AR.
The 30th Motorcycle Battalion was assigned to the 20th Motorized IR
from the 2nd Motorized IR. The division now had:

20th Panzer Grenadier Division: Organized on 23 July 1943 from the

20th Motorized ID. The newly formed 8th Panzer Battalion and the
284th Army Flak Battalion were assigned to the division. On 4/29/44
the 20th Motorized Reconnaissance Battalion and the 30th Motorcycle
Battalion were joined and became the 120th Panzer Reconnaissance
Battalion. On 12/1/44 the motorized infantry became panzer grenade-
ers. The division had:

21st Infantry Division: Mobilized on 8/21/39 with:

In January 1940 the 21st Feldersatz Battalion became the 3/371st

IR (161st ID). In February the 2/45th became the 1/505th IR (291st ID)
and was replaced. In October 1940 one third of the division
(Staff/,3/3rd IR, 3/24th IR, and 3/4th IR) was transferred to the 121st
Division (11th Wave) and were replaced. On 10/2/43 was reorganized
and the 3/3rd, 1/24th and 3/45th were disbanded. The 21st Reconnais-
sance Battaion became the 21st Division Fusilier Battalion AA. The

22nd Infantry Division: Mobilized on 8/18/39 with:

In the winter of 1940/41 the division received the 22nd Flak

Battalion. The regimental support of the 13th, 14th and Staff Compa-
nies were formed into 4th Battalions On 7/29/42 the division was
reorganized and renamed "Air Landing Motorized Troop". The 1/58th AR
was detached and the 4/207th AR became the 4/22nd AR. The sMG and
Pak were broken into four equal strength companies and distributed by
sections to the battalions. On 10/1/42 the division was prepared for
the assault on Crete. The 2/22nd AR and 1/47th Grenadier Regiment
became Kampfgruppe Buhse and were sent to Africa, were they were
destroyed. The 22nd Reconnaissance Battalion became the 122nd
Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion. The 4/22nd AR became the 716th
Heavy Artillery Battalion. In 1943 the 2/22nd AR and the 1/47th
Grenadier Regiment (formed from the 22nd Feldersatzbattalion) were
rebuilt. May 1944 shows the division being fully reformed.
22nd Volks Grenadier Division: Formed in March 1945 from the 22nd
Infantry Division. It had:

In January 1940 the 23rd Feldersatz Battalion became the 3/310th

IR (163rd ID). In February 1940 the 2/68th was detached and became
the 1/511th IR (293rd ID) and was replaced. In October 1940 one third
of the division (Staff/,3/9th, 3/67th and 3/68th IR) was detached to
form the 123rd ID (11th Wave). Those forces detached were rebuilt.
The order of 7/3/42 directed that the division be converted into the
26th Panzer Division.

23rd Infantry Division: On 10/23/42 the division was reformed in
Denmark with those portions not used to form the 26th Panzer Divi-
sion. The division had:

23rd Division (Einheiten) Support Units
On 11/27/42 the 68th Grenadier Regiment became a "fusilier"

regiment. On 9/12/43 the 3/9th, 1/67th and 2/68th IR were disbanded
and the division was reorganized with the Fusilier Battalion being
absorbed. On 8/22/44 the 9th Grenadier Regiment was disbanded. The
remaining kampfgruppe served as a garrison of the Baltic Islands. The
rest was sent to East Prussia in December and reformed. The 9th
Grenadier Regiment remained with the 4th Army and was joined to the
24th Panzer Division. The bulk of the division was then assigned to
the 2nd Army in Western Prussia. The 3/67th, 3/,4/68th and 2nd Fusi-
lier Battalion were reformed.


(162nd ID). In February 1940 the 2/31st became the 1/515th (294th ID –
8th Wave) and was replaced. In December 1940 1/3rd of the division
(Staff,3/32nd, 3/31st and 3/102nd IR) was detached and used to form
the 113th ID (12th Wave). In September 1943 the division was reorgan-
ized. The 24th Reconnaissance Battalion became the 24th Division
Fusilier Battalion (AA). The 1/31st, 1/32nd and 3/102nd were stricken
and the and the 2/31st and 3/32nd were renumbered as the 1st Bns.

25th Motorized Infantry Division: formed on 11/15/40 by the renaming

of the 25th ID, which detached the 13th IR to the 4th Mountain Divi-
sion, along with the 1/25th AR, which became the 1/94th Mountain AR
and the disbanding of the 1/61st AR. On 3/15/41 the 3/40th IR (27th
ID) became the 25th Motorcycle Battalion and the 626th Heavy AR
became the 3/25th AR (the former 3/25th became the 1/25th AR). The

The 292nd Army Flak Battalion was assigned to the division during the
winder of 1942/3.
25th Panzer Grenadier Division: Formed on 6/23/43 by the reorganiza-

tion of the 25th Motorized ID. It added the 5th Panzer Battalion and
the 125th Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion. The division had:

3/362nd IR (196th ID). In February 1940 the 2/39th became the 2/502nd
(290th ID - 8th Wave) and was replaced. In December 1940 1/3 of the
division (Staff/,3/39th, 3/77th and 3/78th) were detached to the 106th
ID (12th Wave). All detached units were replaced. On 11/12/42 the
39th IR became the 39th Fusilier Regiment. In October 1943 the 26th
Feldausbildung Battalion was formed from the 395th Sturm Battalion in
the place of the 3/77th Grenadier Regiment, the 1/62nd AR was redes-
ignated as the 4/26th AR and the 26th Reconnaissance Battalion
became the 26th Division Fusilier Battalion (AA). Around August 1944
the 2/39th, 2/77th and 3/78th IR were disbanded. The division then

The order of 7/31/44 incorporated the 174th Reserve Division

into the 26th ID. On 9/10/44, after heavy losses near Radom, Russia,
the division was disbanded and its debris incorporated into the 253rd

26th Volks Grenadier Regiment: Formed on 9/17/44 by Posen from the

582nd Volks Grenadier Regiment (32nd Wave). It had:

In January 1940 the 27th Feldersatz Battalion became the 1/331st

(167th ID). In February the Staff/63rd IR and 2/91st IR were detached
to the 522nd IR (297th ID - 8th Wave). On 11/1/40 the division was
absorbed into the 17th Panzer Division, with the 91st IR became the
91st Mountain Jäger Regiment and the 3/27th became the 3/94th Moun-
tain AR in the 4th Mountain Division. The 3/40th IR became the 25th
Motorcycle Battalion of the 25th Panzer Grenadier Division.


3/391st IR (170th ID). In February 1940 the 2/83rd became the 1/526th
(298th ID - 8th Wave) and was replaced. In December 1940 1/3rd of the
division (Staff/,3/7th, 3/49th & 1/83rd IR) was detached to become the
102nd ID (12th Wave). Those detached units were replaced. On 12/1/41
the 7th IR was detached to the 252nd ID and the 49th and 83rd IR
became Jäger Regiments. The division was then established as a light
infantry division equipped with low mountain equipment.
28th Jäger Division: Formed on 7/1/42 from the 28th ID with:

On 2/20/44 the 1st Luftwaffe Division was incorporated into the

division. On 10/28/44 the 1031st and 1032nd Kampf March Battalions
were incorporated into the regiment as well. In 1944 the 28th Moun-
tain AR absorbed the 1/64th as its fourth battalion. The division was
captured in East Prussia by the Russians in 1945.
29th Infantry Division: The division contained:

The 86th Motorized IR and the 2/29th AR were transferred to the

2/401st (170th ID). In December 1940 1/3rd of the division (3/6,3/26 &
2/46th IR) was detached to the 110th (Id (12th Wave) and were replaced.
On 12/10/42 the 26th IR became the 26th Fusilier Regiment. In 1942 the
2/6th, 3/26th & 2/46th were disbanded and the 30th Reconnaissance
Battalion became a Fusilier Battalion. The division had:

31st Infantry Division: Mobilized on 8/26/39 with:

In January 1940 the Feldersatz Battalion became the 2/359th IR

(181st ID). The 2/12th IR became the 2/517th (295th ID, 8th Wave) and
was replaced. In October 1940 one third of the division was detached
(Staff 12th IR, 3/12th, 3/17th, & 3/82nd) to the 131st ID (11th Wave).
The detached units were replaced. In 1942 the 2/12th, 2/17th and
3/82nd were disbanded, and the division reorganized with six batta-
lions. In May 1944 the divisional fusilier battalion was formed from
the divisional reconnaissance battalion and the division absorbed the
566th Grenadier Regiment of the 52nd Division (23rd Wave). At that
time the division had:

The division was destroyed in June 1944 while with Army Group Middle
and was disbanded on 18 July 1944.
31st Grenadier Division: Formed on 7/21/44, by the redesignation of

the 550th (Sperr) Division of the 29th Wave with the remnants of the

31st Volks Grenadier Division: formed on 10/9/44 from the 31st Grena-
dier Division. The fusilier and Panzerjäger Battalions were brought
to full strength, the 2/82nd was redesignated the 3(Jäger)/82nd Gre-
nadier Regiment and the 4/31st AR was redesignated as the 1/67th AR.
The division was reformed in Danzig on 17 January 1945 and was taken
into Russian captivity shortly later.

32nd Infantry Division: Mobilized on 8/1/39 with:

32nd Division (Einheiten) Service Units, including
2nd Pioneer Battalion

(162nd ID). In February 1940 the 2/94th was converted into the 1/509th
(292nd ID, 8th Wave) and was replaced. In October 1940 one third of
the division was detached (Staff 4th IR, 3/4, 3/94 & 3/96th) and used
to form the 122nd ID (11th Wave). They were replaced. In 1942 the
3/4, 3/94th and 2/96th were disbanded and the division remained with
only 6 battalions. In September 1943 the division was converted into
a Grenadier Division and the 32nd Reconnaissance Battalion became the
32nd Division Fusilier Battalion (A.A.). The division had:

The division was refreshed in February 1945 by incorporation the

In November 1939 the 33rd Feldersatz Battalion became the 2/2nd

Security Regiment. In February 1940 the staff/110th IR and 2/104th
were transferred to form the 529th IR (299th ID, 8th Wave). They
were replaced. On 11 November 1940 the division was reformed into
the 15th Panzer Division. The 110th IR was transferred to the 112th
ID (12th Wave). The 3/115th IR was used to form the 20th Motorcycle
Battalion (20th Panzer Division), the 1/33rd AR became the 1/86th AR
and the 1/69th AR was disbanded. The horse drawn support units were
sent to the 129th ID.

On 9/19/39 the 105th IR and the 2/34th AR (becoming the 1/172nd

AR) were detached to form the 72nd ID. The 105th IR was replaced by
the 253rd IR. On In January 1940 the 34th Feldersatz Battalion
became the 3/315th IR (167th ID). In December 1940 one third of the
division (3/80th, 3/107th and 3/253rd) were transferred to the 12th ID
(12th Wave). The detached units were replace. At the end of 1942 the
division the 3/80th, 3/107th and 3/253rd were disbanded, leaving the
division with only six battalions. After heavy losses in southern
Russia, the division was reformed on 2/2/44. On 5/10/44 it was
reorganized into the new Grenadier type of division. It now had:

(169th ID). In February 1940 the 2/34th IR became the 1/521st IR
(296th ID, 8th Wave) and was replaced. In December 1940 one third of
the division (Staff 34th IR, 3/34th, 3/109th & 3/111th IR) was detached
to form the 101st Light ID (12th Wave) and was replaced. In April 1942
the 3/34th, 3/109th (?), and 2/111th were disbanded. The 34th IR was
redesignated the 34th Fusilier Regiment on 11/8/42. The reconnais-
sance battalion became the 35th Division Fusilier Battalion (A.A.) when
the division was restructured in November 1943. The division then

36th Motorized Infantry Division: Began forming on 11/1/40 and fin-

ished on 5/1/41 from the 36th ID. The 70th IR was transferred to the
111th ID along with the 2/36th AR (as the 2/117th AR. The 3/36th AR
became the 2/36th and the 3/36th was formed from the 1/72nd AR. The
36th Motorcycle Battalion was formed from the 11th Machine Gun
Battalion. The horse drawn units of the division were transferred to
the 126th ID. The division had:

During the summer of 1943 the division became the 36th Panzer
Grenadier Division and the reconnaissance battalion became the 136th
Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. The division was demotorized in
June 1943 and reverted to the 36th ID.
36th Infantry Division: Formed on from the 36th Panzer Grenadier

Regiment. On 11/2/43 a third regiment was added by the addition of
the 268th Division Group and the 3/87th and 3/118th, which were dis-
banded. The 36th Reconnaissance Battalion became the 36th Divisional
Fusilier Battalion A.A. The 36th (mot) AR became an Army artillery
unit and was replaced by the 268th AR from the now disbanded 268th
ID.

268th Division Group (from 488th & 499th Gru. Regiments)

In June the Division was with the Army group Middle and de-
stroyed in the Bobruisk Pocket. On 8/3/44 it was disbanded.
36th Grenadier Division: Formed on 8/3/44 as part of the 30th Wave

from the remains of the old 36th ID and new drafts. On 9/1/44 the
division was forming and it was ready on 9/15/44. The division had:

(44th) Reichsgrenadier Division Hoch und Deutschmeister: Formed on

6/1/43 from the 44th ID and the addition of the 134th Grenadier
Regiment, which was named the Hoch und Deutschmeister Regiment. The

In November 1943 the 3/131st Grenadier Regiment and the 3/96th

the reconnaissance regiment from 1944 on. On 8/28/44 the 3/131st
became the 44th Mortar Battalion, the 1/132nd and the 3/H.u.D were
disbanded, the 3/131st and 3/132nd were merged into a single battalion,
reducing the division to the strength of 6 battalions. During the
winter 43/44 the Meier Panzer Group (equipped with Tiger Tanks) was
joined to the division. The division was captured near Linz by the
Americans.

81st Pioneer Battalion

IR (168th ID). On 1/28/40 the 2/135th became the 1/524th (297th ID,
8th Wave) and was rebuilt. On 12/10/40 one third of the division
(Staff/130th, 3/130th, 3/133rd and 3/135th IR, which became the 127th
IR) were used to form the 100th Light ID. Those units were rebuilt.
On 6/17/43 several portions of the division were disbanded and some
were rebuilt, including the disbanding of the entire 130th IR. The
130th IR was reformed in May 1944 from the 637th Replacement Regi-

49th Infantry Division: Formed on 2/1/44 from the 191st Reserve Divi-
sion and a fixed infantry division. The division had:

and 305th Western Army Infantry Battalions, the 1423rd Fortress
Infantry Battalion, the Grenadier Ersatz Battalion and the 78th Re-
placement Battalion, and the I, VI, XI, and XVIII Landwehr Fortress
Battalions. The survivors of this force was later drawn into the
246th ID (1/148th became the 1/689th, 1/149th AR became the 1/246th
AR, and the 49th Fusilier Bn became the 246th Fusilier Bn). The
division staff was reformed as the VII Panzer Corps staff on 12/1/44.
50th Infantry Division: Formed on 8/26/39 in Kustrin with:

The six company organization of the Grenz Infantry Regiments was

raised 18, but only 9 companies were used to form field regiments.
The remaining 9 companies were used in the Crossen, Mesertiz and
Schwerin Regiments. The 71st Pioneer Battalion was raised from 2 to
5 companies.
On 10/24/39 the division was used in the formation of the 2nd
Division (1st Wave). The three infantry regiments were, on 11/10/39,
merged with the Crossen, Meseritz and Schwerin companies. The 150th
AR was formed from the 742nd, 743rd and 748th Army Artillery Batta-
lions. On 4/1/40 they were redesignated as the 1/,2/,3/150th AR. The
150th Panzerabwehr Battalion and the 150th Bicycle Squadron were
newly raised. The division now had:

On 9/5/40 the 4/213th AR was redesignated as the 4/150th AR.

On 1/1/41 the 150th Reconnaissance Battalion was formed from the 217th
Reconnaissance Battalion and the 150th Bicycle Squadron. Sometime
later the infantry regiments were redesignated as grenadier regiments.
In October 1943 the 1/121st Grenadier Regiment and 2/122nd
Grenadier Regiment were used to form the 1/759th IR (338th ID) and
2/583rd (219th ID). They were not replaced. Shortly later the 150th
Fusilier Regiment and the 150th Feldersatz Battalion were formed. The

division was destroyed in the Heiligenbeil Pocket and the survivors

52nd Infantry Division: Formed on 8/26/39 as part of the 2nd Wave, it

On 2/3/40 the 2/205th IR was reorganized into the 2/528th IR

(299th ID, 8th Wave) and on 11/22/40 one third of the division
(Staff/,3/163rd, 3/181st & 3/205th) were used to form the 339th ID
(14th Wave). Those units detached were rebuilt. On 3/31/42, because
of the lack of personnel, the 3rd Battalions were disbanded. On
4/15/43 the Staff/205th Grenadier Regiment and the 1/205th, and
2/205th were used to form 3/163rd and 3/181st. The 152nd Reconnais-
sance Battalion was then used to form an infantry battalion, giving
the division seven battalions, but only two regimental staffs. On
11/1/43 the division was disbanded, its surviving personnel going to
various other formations.
52nd Feldausbildiungs (Field Recruit) Division: Formed on 12/3/43 with
the staff of the 52nd ID and detachments from the other Recruit
Divisions as the third such division for Army Group Middle. On 1/15/44

On 9/21/39 the 199th Regiment was renamed the "List" Regiment in

honor of the Bavarian regiment in which Hitler had served in WWI. On
1/28/40 the 2/217th became the 2/523rd (297th ID, 8th Wave). It was
not replaced. On 10/20/40 one third of the division was detached
(Staff/,3/217th, 3/179th and 3/199th) to form the 337th ID (14th wave).
Those detached units were replaced. On 12/31/41 the 1/444th IR of the
disbanded 239th ID became the new 3/179th IR. In February 1942 the
179th IR was detached to serve with the 62nd ID. On 8/18/43 the
676th Grenadier Regiment was assigned to the division and on 11/1/43
it was absorbed into and replaced the 164th IR, its 2nd Bn becoming
the 1/676th IR. After breaking out of the Tscherkassy Pocket it was
rebuilt. The 676th Grenadier Regiment was renamed the 164th on
4/20/44. The 1/,3/157th AR were rebuilt from the 1/,2/86th AR of the
112nd ID. The newly rebuilt division had:

In June 1944 the division was destroyed near Mogihlev and was
formally disbanded on 8/3/44. Its survivors were incorporated into the
2/57th Divisional Group and later on 8/3/44 to Corps Detachment "G".
58th Infantry Division: Mobilized on 8/26/39 as part of the 2nd Wave,

it consisted of:

On 1/31/40 the 2/220th Infantry Regiment became the 1/502nd

(290th ID, 8th Wave). On 12/13/40 a third of the division was detached
(Staff/,3/154th, 3/209th and 3/220th IR) and became the 320th ID (13th
Wave). Those units detached were reformed. In July 1942 the 1/154th,
3/209th and 3/220th were disbanded, the 3/154th was redesignated as
the 1/154th and the remains of the three disbanded battalions was
used to form a 9th (bicycle) Company for each regiment. These bicycle
companies were then disbanded on 2/23/44. In 1944 the division con-

59th Infantry Division: Formed on 6/26/44 as part of the 27th Wave,

the division was ready on 20 August. It consisted of:

The 159th Panzerjäger Company was expanded to a full battalion

in April and renumbered as the 59th Panzerjäger Battalion. The divi-
sion appears to have been redesignated a Volks Grenadier Division in
late 1944 or early 1945. It was captured by the Americans in the
Ruhr Pocket.

The artillery was reinforced by the addition of the 741st and

750th Light Artillery Battalions and 761st Heavy Artillery Battalion.
On 4/1/40 they officially became the 2/,3/,4/160th AR. On 7/18/40 the
division was motorized, the 243rd IR was disbanded. The 92nd and
244th were motorized on 9/15/40 and the 244th was redesignated as
the 120th IR. The 2/,3/,4/160th AR were reestablished as army troops
and the 2/77th AR became the 2/160th AR and the 601st Heavy Artil-
lery Battalion became the 3/160th AR.
60th (mot) Infantry Division: When established the division had:

On 4/1/40 the 160th Motorcycle and 160th Reconnaissance Battal-
ions were merged and the 282nd Army Flak Battalion was joined to the

(18th Panzer Division) became the 160th Panzer Battalion. The division
was then destroyed at Stalingrad.
The division was rebuilt by the order of 2/17/44 in southern
France using the 271st Grenadier Regiment, 93rd ID. The rest of the
division was organized on 3/15/44. It was retitled the 60th Panzer
Grenadier Division, but the order of 14 June 1944 changed its name to
the Feldherrnhalle Panzer Grenadier Division.
61st Infantry Division: Formed on 8/8/39 as part of the 2nd Wave with:

On 2/2/40 the 2/176th IR became the 2/505th IR (291st ID, 8th

Wave) and was replaced. On 11/18/40 one third of the division
(Staff/,2/151st, 3/152nd and 3/176th) were detached to form the 336th
ID (14th Wave) and were replaced. In June/July 1942 the 1/151st,
1/162nd and 1/176th IRs were disbanded and the remaining battalions
were renumbered to make up for their loss. The Panzerjäger Battalion
and the Reconnaissance Battalion were merged to form a Schnell Batta-
lion. On 10/1/43 this became the 61st Divisional Fusilier Battalion.

On 4/2/44 the survivors of the 9th Feld Division (L) were

absorbed into the division. The division was reformed in October 1944
and became the 61st Volks Grenadier Division. On 3/31/45 the division

Division. On 4/10/44 the division was captured at Königsberg by the
Russians.
62nd Infantry Division: Mobilized on 8/26/39 as part of the 2nd Wave,

this division had:

On 2/4/40 the 2/190th became the 2/526th (298th ID, 8th Wave).
On 10/24/40 one third of the division (Staff/1/190th IR, 1/164th and
1/183rd IR) were detached to form the 323rd ID (13th Wave). Those
units were replaced. In February 1942 the 164th IR was detached to
the 57th ID and the 179th IR was assigned to the Division. Between
3/27 and 7/5/42 the division also had the Kampfgruppe Friedrich (208th
IR, formed of the 2/,3/208th and 1/226th IR) attached to it. The bulk
of the division was destroyed in the Don basin and on 5/4/43 the
183rd and 190th Grenadier Regiments were disbanded. The division was
then assigned the 179th Grenadier Regiment (3 bns) and on 5/4/43 the
354th Grenadier Regiment (286th Security Division, 3rd Wave).
On 11/2/43 the Kampfgruppe of the 38th Division, which consisted
of the Staff/,1/,2/,3/112th Grenadier Division, 2/138th AR, the 138th
Reconnaissance Battalion and the 138th Pioneer Battalion, was trans-
ferred to the 62nd ID to be rebuilt. The 3/179th,3/112th, and 3/354th
IRs were disbanded with the 3/354th becoming the 2/354th. The
2/162nd AR was also disbanded. The 3/162nd Panzerjäger Battalion
became the 471st Panzer Destroyer Battalion and the 4/162nd became a
school battery. The division was reformed with:

the 3/196th was disbanded, the 2/196th was disbanded on 6/12/42 and
on 7/2/42 the 1/188th was disbanded. They were reformed on 4/1/43 by
the redesignation of the 1/188th Grenadier Regiment as the 3/169th
and the 3/188th as the 2/196th. The 188th Grenadier regiment was
reorganized on 1/14/43 from the 1st Alarm Regiment of the 2nd Army.
On 11/1/43 the division was converted to the 1944 style division and
the third battalions were all disbanded. The division had:

Division) replaced the disbanded 2/168th AR. In April 1945 the 3/331st

69th Infantry Division: Formed on 8/26/39 as part of the 2nd Wave.

On 2/1/40 the 2/193rd IR became the 2/516th IR (295th ID, 8th

Wave). On 22/5/40 the Staff/236th and 3/159th were sent to form the
357th IR (199th ID). Those detached units were rebuilt. The 4/169th
AR (heavy battalion) was sent to the 260th ID on 4/26/40 and on
2/21/41 it became the 4/260th AR. When the division was sent to
Norway to fight the Russians, the 193rd Grenadier Regiment remained
in Germany later becoming the 193rd Grenadier Brigade. The division
formed the 157th Grenadier Regiment anew. On 11/3/43 the 1/157th was
formed from the 3/236th Grenadier Regiment and the 2/157th from the
2/159th Grenadier Regiment. The old 3/159th was redesignated as the
2/159th. The reconnaissance battalion became the 69th Division Fusi-
lier Battalion (A.A.) and the division received the 4/269th AR (heavy
battalion) to replace the earlier artillery battalion that was de-
tached. It was redesignated as the 4/169th in August 1944.

72nd Infantry Division: Formed on 9/19/39 from the Trier Grenz Divi-

10/2/43 which directed the reformation of all the East Divisions to
the Style 44 Divisions, the third battalions of the infantry regiments
were disbanded and the 73rd Fusilier Battalion was formed. On 5/944
the Division was destroyed in the Crimea.
The division was ordered reformed on 6/16/44, from the 213th

ID (8th Wave) and o0n 10/31/40 one third of the division, including

the 4/268th AR, and the 4/218th AR became the new 4/176th AR. On
11/12/32 the 230th Grenadier Regiment became the 230th Fusilier
Regiment. In 1943 the Division was destroyed at Stalingrad.
The division was reformed by the order of 2/17/43 and was re-
built with the 876th and 877th Grenadier Regiments. In November 1943
the 1/178th,3/230th, 176th Reconnaissance Battalion and the 3/176th AR
were sent to Southern Russia and during the winter of 1943/44 they
became the 1/755th (334th ID), 1/951st (361st ID), 376th Fusilier Bn
(376th ID) and 3/361st AR (361st ID). The 2/203rd Grenadier Regiment
became the 76th Fusilier Battalion on 2/2/44. The 3/176th AR was
sent to the 6th Army as the 3/162nd AR,. and was reformed from the
1/378th AR. On 13 May the battle group of the 5th Luftwaffe Feld

78th Infantry Division: Formed on 8/26/39 as part of the 2nd Wave, it

On 1/27/40 the 2/195th became the 2/524th, 297th ID. On

11/25/40 one third of the division, Staff/195th, 3/195th, 3/215th and
3/238th, were detached to become the 305th ID (13th Wave). The
detached units were replaced. On 11/11/41 the 238th IRs was disband-
ed and replaced by the 1/,2/,3/14th IR. On 12/10/41 the 3/14th, 3/195th
and 3/215th Were also disbanded.
On 1/1/43 the division was reorganized as a Sturmdivision. The
infantry regiments became Sturm-Regiments with only a single grenade-
er battalion (4 cos), 5th squadron, 6th Pioneer Company, After 2
February, each battalion of the artillery Regiment was paired with an
infantry battalion (1/178th AR with 215th, 2/178th AR with 14th and
3/178th AR with 195th). The artillery was reequipped with sturm-
geschütz battalion, a flak battalion and a nebelwerfer battalion. On
4/11/43 the 178th AR was pulled back together and on 6/1/43 the three
sturm regiments were reformed with two battalions and reinforced with
the 9th Squadron and 10th Pioneer Company. The division had:

In 1944 the Sturmregiments added a 14th Panzerjäger Company, the

Battalion. The division was heavily damaged by Minsk in July 1944 and
disbanded. The survivors were absorbed by the 565th Volks Grenadi-
er Division.
The division was reformed on 7/18/44 from the 543rd Grenadier
(Sperr) Division (29th Wave) as a grenadier division. On 7/27/44 it
became Himmler's personal Sturmdivision. Documents show a 78th
Grenadier division that apparently became the 78th Volks Grenadier
Division (32nd Wave) after 10/9/44. After 1/1/45 a Volks-Sturm-Divi-

Wave). On 10/20/40 one third of the division (Staff/226th,
3/208th,3/212nd and 3/216th IR) were detached to the 342nd ID (14th
Wave) They were replaced. On 5/8/42 the 1/208th was renamed the
1/226th, the 1/226th became the 1/208th. The 208th IR was trans-
ferred between 3/27 and 7/4/42 to the 62nd ID. On 7/10/42 the two
battalions were sent back to their parent regiments. In January 1943
the division was destroyed at Stalingrad.
The division was reformed on 2/12/43 and sent to Stalino/South
Russia in March 1943. On 2/15/43 it was reinforced by the 886th
Grenadier Regiment and various portions of the 298th ID. It also
received the greatest portion of the 140th Division Service Units
from the disbanded 22nd Panzer division. On 10/7/43 the Reconnais-
sance Battalion became the 179th Division Fusilier Battalion and in
November the 79th Divisional Fusilier Battalion (A.A.). On 1/31/44 the
2/212th and 1/226th absorbed the 1/753rd and 1/731st IR. On 3/1/44
the 2/208th was rebuilt using the 1001st Battle March Battalion. On
7/7/44 the 1/226th was rebuilt with the 1/993rd Grenadier Regiment.
The 3/208th, 3/212th and 2/226th were disbanded in June 1944 and the

80th Infantry Division: Ordered formed on 5 May 1943, the division

81st Infantry Division: Formed on 12/1/39, as part of the 6th Wave,

Company of the infantry regiments was a mortar company. It had:

The division stood down from August 1940 th February 1941. In

preparation for the Russian invasion, each infantry regiment formed a
13th company with infantry support guns drawn from the 225th ID. The
189th IR and 2/181st AR were destroyed in the Velikie-Luki pocket and
was disbanded on 5/31/42. The 2/181st AR was reformed on 6/1/42.
The 189th Grenadier Regiment was reformed on 9/22/43 from the 2/161st
and 2/174th IRs. On 1/16/44 the 61st Divisional Fusilier Battalion was
formed from the 181st Reconnaissance Squadron. The 3/161st and
3/174th were redesignated as the 2/161st and 2/174th. The division

Fusilier Regiment was also disbanded, but on 10/4/44 it was reformed.

5 battalions. In February 1945 the Fusilier Battalion was reformed
from the81st Security Battalion and the 2/181st was reformed from the
213th AR (which had been disbanded on 11/8/44). The division was
captured in Kurland by the Russians.
82nd Infantry Division: Formed on 12/1/39 as part of the 6th Wave, it

was equipped with Czech equipment. The 13th Company of the infantry
regiments was a heavy mortar company. The division had:

then served as occupation troops in Holland. On 2/7/42 the division
was brought back to full strength. On 3/1/42 the regiments added a
13th company of infantry support guns. After the battle of the Kas-
tornoje Pocket the division was reformed. After breaking out of the
Hube Pocket near Kamenetz-Podolsk, the division was reduced to the
82nd Division Group with the strength of a regiment. It was absorbed
into the 254th ID and on 5/10/44 the division was disbanded.
83rd Infantry Division: Formed on 12/1/39 as part of the 6th Wave, it

was equipped with Czech equipment. The 13th Company of the infantry
regiments was a heavy mortar company. The division had:

On 1/30/43 the 277th Grenadier Regiment and the 3/183rd AR were

of 3/29/45 the division was rebuilt as part of the 35th Wave. It then

86th Infantry Division: Formed on 8/26/39 as part of the 2nd Wave,

On 1/28/40 the 2/167th was transferred out and became the

2/529th, 299th Division (8th Wave) and on 10/13/40 one third of the

tached to form the 306th Division. They were rebuilt. On 2/18/42 the
3/184th was disbanded and on 1/19/43 replaced by the 9th Army School

87th Infantry Division: Formed on 8/26/39 as part of the 2nd Wave, it

On 2/3/40 the division detached the 2/173rd IR which became the

2/514th of the 294th ID (8th Wave). On 10/14/40 one third of the
division, staff/187th, 3/173rd, 3/187th, was detached to the 319th ID
(13th wave) and the 3/185th to the 335th ID (14th Wave). They were
rebuilt. On 3/31/43 the 3/173rd,1/185th and 2/187th were disbanded.
The 3/185th became the 1/185th, the 2nd became the 3/185th; the 173rd
Grenadier regiment was reformed on 4/12/44. The division now had:

The 185th Grenadier Regiment was disbanded in Kurland in 1944

and the rest of the division was captured in Kurland by the Russians

88th Infantry Division: Formed on 12/1/39 as part of the 6th Wave, the
division was equipped with Czech weapons and equipment. The 13th
Company of the infantry Regiments was a heavy mortar company. They
were disbanded on 1/15/41. The division had:

On 12/23/41 the division was reformed and each infantry regiment
reformed its 13th Company as an infantry support gun company. The
heavy battalion (4/188th) of the artillery regiment was detached and

from the 1/162nd AR. At the same time the Panzerjäger Battalion was
reinforced by two companies (511th and 257th). During the winter of

On 11/2/43 the 323rd Division Group of the disbanded 323rd ID
(13th Wave) were absorbed into the division and the 3rd battalions of
the infantry regiments and the ski battalion were disbanded as the
division reformed itself into a Type 44 division. The 246th Grenadier
Regiment was disbanded and its 2nd battalion was taken into the 248th
Grenadier Regiment, whose 2nd battalion had become a fusilier battal-

1/,2/,3/1060th Grenadier Regiment (from 1033rd GR)
The 192nd Divisional Fusilier Battalion was formed in May 1944 in

Italy. The 1059th Grenadier Regiment formed a 4th battalion in June
from the 560th Ost Battalion. The division was reduced to a Kampf-
gruppe and was disbanded on 6/20/44 in Albania. The remnants of the
division were used to rebuild the 362nd ID. The two grenadier regi-
ments retained their numbers, the 192nd Panzerjäger Battalion became
the 362nd Panzerjäger Battalion. The other service units were
disbanded.
93rd Infantry Division: Formed on 9/17/39 as part of the 5th Wave,

the division had:

193rd Division (Einheiten) Support Units (contained a bicycle
squadron in lieu of a reconnaissance battalion)
The three infantry regiments had a 13th company formed of heavy

mortars, which were replaced in 1941 by three infantry gun companies
from the 208th ID (3rd Wave). The division was placed on standdown
from 8/26/40 to 2/14/41.
The 271st Grenadier Regiment "Feldherrnhalle" was by the order
of 2/17/42 was used to rebuild the 60th (mot) Division and became part
of that Panzer Grenadier Division when it was reestablished. The
remainder of the division was restructured into a Type 44 division on
9/22/43, with the 273rd GR being reformed and a Divisional Fusilier
Battalion being raised. The division had:

The division was reformed on 3/1/43 in Lorient (France) from the
878th and 875th Grenadier Regiments. On 10/1/43 the division was
restructured into the Type 44 Division with the 3/267th becoming the
1/952nd, the 3/276th becoming the 1/953rd, both of the 361st ID. The
3/194th AR became the 1/275th AR (275th ID).
The remainder of the division served at Cassino on 5/20/44
where it took heavy casualties. The division was used to rebuild the
305th ID and remained as a shell division, cadre only, until 13 August
1944 when it was rebuilt from the Schlesien Shadow Division. It then

95th Infantry Division: Formed on 9/19/39 as part of the 5th Wave, the division had:

From August 1940 to February 1941 the division stood down. The
2/,3/195th Panzerjäger Battalion were detached and on 7/4/40 they
became the 2/,3/230th Panzerjäger Battalion in the 169th ID. The
3/195th was reformed on 2/27/41. On 4/2/41 the heavy mortar compa-
nies in the regiments were replaced by close support infantry gun
companies taken from the 211th ID.
During the winter of 1943/44 the division was reorganized into
a Type 44 Division. The 1/278th became the 195th Divisional Battalion
and finally the 195th Fusilier Battalion. The 3/279th and 2/280th IR
were disbanded in June 1944. The division had:

On 7/21/44 the division was disbanded and used to build the 95th

97th Light Infantry Division: Formed on 12/10/40 as part of the 12th

The division underwent no known changes and was captured in the

Deutsch-Brode Region in 1945 by the Russians.
98th Infantry Division: Formed on 9/18/39as part of the 5th Wave, the

Between August 1940 and February 1941 the division stood down.
Upon being recalled, the 13th Companies (heavy mortar companies) were
replaced by close infantry support gun companies drawn from the 215th ID.
In 1942 the 2/282nd, 3/289th and 3/290th IR were disbanded. The
3/282nd became the 2/282nd. The division had only six battalions
through the summer of 1943. On 2/14/43 the 289th Grenadier Regiment
was disbanded and the 98th Divisional Battalion was formed from the
2/289th. The 2/289th became the 3/282nd. On 3/1/44 the division was
reestablished with three grenadier regiments when the 615th Grenadier
Regiment was assigned. In May 1944 the division was destroyed in the
Crimea.
The division was reformed on 6/5/44 in Croatia from the remain-
der of the 98th Division and the staff of the 387th ID. The division

While serving in Italy, on 9/19/44 the Grenadier Lehr Brigade was

incorporated as the 290th Grenadier Lehr Regiment. It then was
transferred to the Reichsgrenadier Division "Hoch- und
Deutschmeister". On 10/28/44 it was absorbed into the 98th ID as the
117th Grenadier Lehr Regiment and finally the became the 117th Grenad-

3561st Feldrekruten Company. On 8/9/40 the division was disbanded.

101st Light Infantry Division: Formed on 12/10/40 as part of the 12th

Wave, with one third of the 35th ID. The division had:

101st Jäger Division: Formed on 7/6/42 from the 101st Light ID, it had:

On 6/1/42 the 84th Infantry Regiment was assigned to the divi-

sion as a fourth regiment. On 7/10/42 it was used to replace the
235th IR, which was disbanded. On 7/20/42 the 3/84th, 1/232nd and
3/233rd were also disbanded, bring the division to six battalions.
On 11/2/43 the division absorbed the remains of the 216th ID,
which was at that point the 216th Division Group, the 2/216th AR and
the 102nd Divisional Fusilier Battalion. The 233rd Grenadier Regiment
and the 2/104th AR were disbanded. The division had:

The 50th and 70th IRs were formed as third regiments as a

result of the reorganization of their original divisions into motorized
divisions. The artillery regiment was newly formed, but some drafts
came from other sources. The panzerjäger battalion, the reconnais-

built with 2/3rds coming from standing divisions.
The artillery regiment received two nebelwerfer batteries on
6/1/42. On 5/4/43 the 1/50th, 1/70th and 2/117th were disbanded and

Regiments from the 444th and 454th Security Divisions. They were

In May 1944 the division was destroyed in Sebastopol. The

remains went to France. The 50th 117th Grenadier Regiments were

Bessarabia. The division was not further developed and never rees-

In December 1944 the division disbanded the Staff/,2/437th and

2/436th IR as well as the 3/132nd AR. the 1/437th was transferred to

133rd Fortress Division: Formed on 2/21/44 from the Krete Fortress

Brigade. It contained:

14th, 50th, and 170th IDs and the 203rd and 390th Security Divisions.

136th Infantry Division: Formed as a staff only on 4/25/44, two four

company battalions - (M) 1/136th & (M) 2/136th - were formed from
infantry with stomach problems (notorious "stomach divisions"). It was

On 11/2/43 the division was disbanded. The staff/,2/,3/448th

Grenadier Regiment were formed into the 137th Division Group of "E"
Corps Detachment. The divisional staff formed the staff for the
271st ID (22nd Wave), the Signals Bn became army troops, the 1/137th
AR became the 4/246th AR, the 2/137th AR became the 2/277th AR, the
staff became the Staff 2/361st AR. The service units were dispersed
into the newly forming 21st and 22nd Wave divisions.
140th Infantry Division: Formed as a staff in 9/7/44 under the name

Kräutler Division Group and later as "K" Division Group. It contained:

On 12/13/40 the 219th AR formed a 4th (heavy) Battalion from the

1/343rd IR, the 2/351st was replaced by the 3/343rd. The 343rd IR
was disbanded on 3/27/43, the second had been disbanded on 10/21/41
in Spass-Kusowy and not reformed. The division stood with two regi-

219th Divisional battalion was formed.
On 11/2/43 the division was disbanded and the 183rd Divisional
Group was formed with the 330th and 351st Regimental Groups. The

battalion and administrative troops were assigned to the "C" Corps

In March 1945 the division was in Silesia serving with the Middle
Army group and was lost in the capitulation. It had:

and 481st)

the division had:

223rd Light Artillery Battalion
On 1/10/40 the division received the 6th, 16th and 26th Feldersatz
Battalions and other drafts, bring it up to full divisional strength.
It had:

on 9/11/40 the 345th IR and 1/233rd were removed and on 1/11/40

they were sent to the 199th ID. The artillery was reinforced by the
addition of two batteries on 11/17/40, with the 3rd Bn becoming the
1st. The 1/362nd Grenadier Regiment was disbanded in Russia in 1943.
It was replaced in September 1943. On 1/6/44 the part of the division
not in Norway, was with Army Group Middle, where it was destroyed and
disbanded on 9/15/44. The division was distributed to the 361st ID as
follows:

the division had:

On 1/8/40 the division received the 183rd Landwehr Regiment and
drafts, building itself into a full division:

On 5/16/40 the artillery regiment was reinforced to 9 batteries.

On 5/12/40 the 347th Regiment formed the missing third battalion. On
10/20/40 the Staff/347th, 3/322nd and 3/321st IR were detached to
form the 682nd IR (335th ID - 14th Wave), plus the Staff/,2/229th AR.
They were reformed. In the winter of 1940/1941 the artillery formed a
4th (heavy) battalion form the 4/225th AR. On 5/7/41 the 3/347th was
detached to the Afrika Corps and on 4/1/42 it became the 1/200th
Light (mot) IRs, 90th Light Afrika Division. During the winter 1941/2
the 4/229th AR reverted to the 4/225th AR and was replaced by the
1/58th AR from the 22nd ID. On 4/30/43 the Staff/,3/321st and
3/322nd were disbanded and the 1/,2/321st were incorporated the into
the 332nd & 347th. The division then had:
1/,2/332nd Grenadier Regiment (plus 2/321st)

1/,2/347th Grenadier Regiment (plus 1/321st)
339th Divisional Battalion
On 11/2/43 the 2/321st and 2/347th were disbanded and the

1/321st became the 2/321st, which was absorbed into the 52nd Division-
al Group. the division now had:

3/321st Grenadier Regiment
52nd Divisional Group (with 163rd & 181st Regimental Groups)
229th Divisional (Einheiten) Service Units
On 7/22/44 in the Witebesk Pocket, the division was destroyed and its
survivors joined with those of the 95th and 356th Divisions to form
the "H" Corps Detachment. This merging occurred as follows:

the division had:

On 1/17/40 the division received the 35th Landwehr Regiment and

drafts to form a full division. It now contained:

On 9/1/40 the division was raised to 9 batteries by absorbing

the 4th-6th Btrys from the 300th AR and formed a 4th (heavy) Batta-
lion from the 4/300th AR. On 10/30/40 the division detached the
Staff/326th, 3/308th and 3/305th to help form the 595th IR, 327th ID
(13th Wave). The 2/357th became the 7/327th AR. Those units were
rebuilt. The 2/326th became the garrison battalion of Copenhagen and
on 5/28/40 it was replaced. On 8/14/41 the Staff/,2/,3/326th were
disbanded and on 2/19/43 they were reformed from March Battalions.
On 9/11/43 the third battalions of the regiments were disbanded
(3/305th became 1/305th IR). The division now had:

On 6/12/44 the division was rebuilt from the Bohemian Shadow Division
in southern France. After being pushed back into Germany, on
11/3/44, the division absorbed the following units:

On 10/18/44 the division contained:

On 1/21/45 the division absorbed the 1/V Heavy Anti-Tank Company,

2111th Sturmgeschütz Company, and the remains of the 960th Security
Battalion. The division withdrew to the Neckar where it was taken
prisoner by the Americans.
199th Infantry Division: Formed on 11/1/40 in Norway from portions of

other divisions serving in Norway (69th, 163rd, 181st, 196th and 214th
IDs). it was part of the 7th Wave. It consisted of:

On 6/1/42 the 341st IR and 3/199th AR were detached to the

270th ID. They were not replaced. In early 1945 the division had the
Staff/856th Fortress IR and the 649th, 651st, 652nd and 1014th For-
tress Infantry Battalions assigned to it. The Division was brought
back to Germany and it was reorganized as follows:

199th fusilier Battalion
The division was taken prisoner by the Russians in Brandenburg. part

was also captured by the Americans near Havelberg.
