CODE : J3010

COURSE : MECHANICS OF MACHINES

EXPERIMENT : CENTRIFUGAL FORCE

EXPERIMENT : CENTRIFUGAL FORCE

1.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES :

1.1 This experiment permits an investigation of the physic laws of such circular motion,
for example the relationship between the radius of the arm, mass and speed of the
body.

2.0 EQUIPMENT / APPARATUS :

2.1 Centrifugal Force Apparatus TM600

2.2 Body (54g, 79g, 105g)

3.0 SAFETY AND HEALTH :

3.1 SAFETY SHOES

4.0 THEORY :

The following experiments are designed to substantiate the relationship

F = mrω2 .

Where, m = mass

r = radius

ω = angular velocity
5.0 PROCEDURES :

Experiments 1: Centrifugal Force as a Function of Speed.

1 ) Select body m=105 g and arm radius , r =100mm

2) Increase speed from 100 to 450 rpm increments of 50 rpm.

3) The expected centrifugal force can be calculated from the speed in rpm as
shown below:

F = mr ω2= mrπ2n2 = 0.000115N2

4) Measured and calculated results are compared in table 1.

Experiment 2 : Centrifugal Force as a Function of Mass

1 ) Preselect speed n=300rpm and radius r=100mm

2 ) The tree bodies m=54g, 79 g and 105g are utilized one after the other
3 ) The expected centrifugal force is calculated from the mass m in g as follows:

2
F=rω2m = r π2n2 m = 0.1π2 30030
2
m = 0.0987 m
302

4) Measured and calculated results are compared in table 2

Experiments 3: Centrifugal Force as a Function of Radius

1) Preselect the speed n=300rpm and mass=105g.

2) The body is consecutively inserted into engaging holes at 25, 50, 75, 100
and 125mm
3) The expected centrifugal force is calculated from the radius r in mm as
follows:
F=mω2r = m π2n2 r = 0.105π2 3002 = 0.1036r
302 302
.
4) Measured and calculated results are compared in table 2
