Day 1 to 3-
Introduction to plant and animal cells. Students will be asked what all living things are made of? All living
things are made of cells. The cell is the smallest part(structure) of a living thing that can carry out all the
life process (functions). What do we need in order to be able to see cells? ( a microscope). Animal and
plant cells are similar on that they each have a nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, and vacuoles. Plant
cells have a cell wall and chloroplasts. They differ in shape- plant cells tend to be rectangular and animal
cells tend to be spherical and irregular.

The first cell we will learn about is the animal cell. I will draw an animal cell on the overhead. The
students will draw in their notebooks too. I will label each part and the function. (see attached for
content).

I will repeat the same steps for the plant cell. Students will need to know that the 2 cells have similar
parts, but the plant cell has 2 additional parts- a cell wall and chloroplasts. (see attached for content).

After we have drawn, labeled, and discussed the functions of plant and animal cells, we will complete a
Venn Diagram using the smart board to compare the two cells. Students will be given a blank Venn
diagram to complete as a whole group- put in their interactive notebooks.

Students will be given numerous assignments on cells. They will practice labeling the parts and
describing the cell functions in both plant and animal cells. (see attached).
