Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW)

Company Profile
Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW), (literally English: Bavarian Motor Works) is a German
automobile, motorcycle and engine manufacturing company founded in 1916. It also owns and
produces the Mini brand, and is the parent company of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. BMW produces
motorcycles under BMW Motorrad and Husqvarna brands. BMW is known for its performance and
luxury vehicles, and is a global leader in premium car sales.

History of BMW

BMW entered existence as a business entity following a restructuring of the Rapp Motorenwerke
aircraft engine manufacturing firm in 1917. After the end of World War I in 1918, BMW was forced
to cease aircraft engine production by the terms of the Versailles Armistice Treaty. The company
consequently shifted to motorcycle production in 1923 once the restrictions of the treaty started to
be lifted, followed by automobiles in 1928–29.

The circular blue and white BMW logo or roundel is portrayed by BMW as the movement of an
aircraft propeller, to signify the white blades cutting through the blue sky — an interpretation that
BMW adopted for convenience in 1929, twelve years after the roundel was created. The emblem
evolved from the circular Rapp Motorenwerke company logo, from which the BMW company grew,
combined with the blue and white colors of the flag of Bavaria, reversed to produce the BMW
roundel. However, the origin of the logo being based on the movement of a propeller is in dispute,
according to an article posted in 2010 by the New York Times, quoting "At the BMW Museum in
Munich, Anne Schmidt-Possiwal, explained that the blue-and-white company logo did not represent a
spinning propeller, but was meant to show the colors of the Free State of Bavaria."

By the year 1959, the automotive division of BMW was in financial difficulties and a shareholders
meeting was held to decide whether to go into liquidation or find a way of carrying on. It was decided
to carry on and to try to cash in on the current economy car boom enjoyed so successfully by some of
Germany's ex-aircraft manufacturers such as Messerschmitt and Heinkel. The rights to manufacture
the Italian Iso Isetta were bought; the tiny cars themselves were to be powered by a modified form of
BMW's own motorcycle engine. This was moderately successful and helped the company get back on
its feet. The controlling majority shareholder of the BMW Aktiengesellschaft since 1959 is the Quandt
family, which owns about 46% of the stock. The rest is in public float.

BMW acquired the Hans Glas company based in Dingolfing, Germany, in 1966. It was reputed that
the acquisition was mainly to gain access to Glas' development of the timing belt with an overhead
camshaft in automotive applications. Glas vehicles were briefly badged as BMW until the company
was fully absorbed.

In 1992, BMW acquired a large stake in California based industrial design studio DesignworksUSA,
which they fully acquired in 1995. In 1994, BMW bought the British Rover Group (which at the time
consisted of the Rover, Land Rover and MG brands as well as the rights to defunct brands including
Austin and Morris), and owned it for six years. By 2000, Rover was making huge losses and BMW
decided to sell the combine. The MG and Rover brands were sold to the Phoenix Consortium to form
MG Rover, while Land Rover was taken over by Ford. BMW, meanwhile, retained the rights to build
the new Mini, which was launched in 2001.

Chief designer Chris Bangle announced his departure from BMW in February 2009, after serving on
the design team for nearly seventeen years. He was replaced by Adrian van Hooydonk, Bangle's
former right hand man. Bangle was known for his radical designs such as the 2002 7-Series and the
2002 Z4. In July 2007, the production rights for Husqvarna Motorcycles was purchased by BMW for a
reported 93 million euros. BMW Motorrad plans to continue operating Husqvarna Motorcycles as a
separate enterprise. All development, sales and production activities, as well as the current
workforce, have remained in place at its present location at Varese.

Production
In 2006, the BMW group (including Mini and Rolls-Royce) produced 1,366,838 four-wheeled vehicles,
which were manufactured in five countries. In 2010, it manufactured 1,481,253 four-wheeled vehicles
and 112,271 motorcycles (under both the BMW and Husqvarna brands)

It is reported that about 56 per cent BMW brand vehicles produced are powered by petrol engines
and the remaining 44 per cent are powered by diesel engines. Of those petrol vehicles, about 27 per
cent are four cylinder models and about nine per cent are eight-cylinder models.

BMW also has local assembly operation using complete knock down components in Thailand, Russia,
Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Chennai, India for 3, 5, 7 series and X3

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo (also referred to as the BMW 5 Series GT) is an executive or mid-size
car from German manufacturer BMW, which was first displayed at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show as
a concept car. It is the first production-destined rendition for BMW's Progressive Activity Sedan (PAS)
series of cars, its development code was F07.

Design and style

The 5 GT has dimensions mimicking in length the 7 Series, a height and trunk space slightly more
than the 5 Series wagon, and headroom comparable to the BMW X5.[9] It also features design cues
from the BMW CS Concept, as well as new designs indicative of upcoming models. The vehicle has a
coupe-like roofline, elevated seating, and a "bi-modal" trunk which operates like a sedan or a
traditional SUV. For the first time on a 4-door BMW, the 5 GT features frameless doors. The
headlights contain the new LED Corona rings slanted at an angle and extending into the fenders.

BMW 7-Series (F01)

BMW 7-Series (F01)

BMW's full-size flagship executive sedan is the 7 Series. Typically, BMW introduces many of their
innovations first in the 7 Series, such as the somewhat controversial iDrive system. The 7 Series
Hydrogen, featuring one of the world's first hydrogen fuelled internal combustion engines, is fuelled
by liquid hydrogen and emits only clean water vapour. The latest generation (F01) debuted in 2009.
Based on the 5 Series' platform, the 6 Series is BMW's grand touring luxury sport coupe/convertible
(E63/E64). A 2-seater roadster and coupe which succeeded the Z3, the Z4 (E85) has been sold since
2002.

Design

For the 7 Series, the previous E65/E66 model marked a revolution in the 7-Series design, while the
F01 is more evolutionary. The front end is inspired by the BMW CS Concept, from the large twin
grilles to the headlamps, which have "eyebrows" and internal configuration similar to individual
lamps but slightly different in shape.[7] It now looks more conventional and less controversial than
the vehicle it replaces. The interior has also been reworked and the column-mounted shifter has
relocated to the center console. Its tail lights have design cues to the E32 7-series.

Technology and equipment

The models include a 6-speed automatic transmission (760i/Li;Activhybrid7: 8-speed automatic).

Dynamic Drive Control with optional Adaptive Drive added COMFORT setting in addition to Comfort,
NORMAL, SPORT and SPORT+ modes, with reduced stability control intervention in the SPORT+
setting and in the traction mode.

The cargo capacity is 500 litres. Optional features include 4-zone automatic air conditioning,
telecommunication and navigation systems, a USB port, iPhone integration, bluetooth, an 80-GB
hard disc for navigation data and music collection, a multi-channel audio system, a DAB double
tuner, a DVD entertainment system at the rear, a Heads-Up Display, an electrically swivelling trailer
hook, long wheelbase, luxury seating: massage, headed seats (front and rear), adaptive steering, and
ceramic controls.

Mexican built 7 series also carry the options for a rear refrigerator, selective multi-color ambient
lighting, and extended range night vision. They also have several interior trim options only available
for the Mexican market including red leather, black & red leather, and tan & black leather. Mexican
built 7 series are also available in special police and political services packages. A number of these
models are in service with the Mexican Federal Government and the Mexican Federal Police as well
as the Public Security Secretary.

Safety

All BMW 7 Series' have in series safety equipment: Beside ABS including brake assistant and CBC
(Cornering Brake control) pretensioner and belt load limiter on all seats, ESP (Dynamic Stability
Control, BMW) with DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) are present. Furthermore 10 Airbags
(driver/front passenger, head curtain airbags (both rows) and two sideairbags, front outboard and
rear outboard, as well as driver and passenger knee airbags) and active headrests in front. The
adaptive brake lights indicate how strongly the vehicle is braking. In the case of an emergency stop,
the normal LED running lights (on when low beams are on) are illuminated to the same intensity of
the brighter normal LED brake indicator light, creating a large, extra bright light to warn drivers
behind. Also, adaptive bi-xenon headlights (low beam) swivel in accordance with the steering wheel
for curves, level when going over hills, or when the car is loaded, to reduce glare to other drivers.
Also, front mounted side turn indicators are standard on every BMW on the fenders.

In the 7 Series - partly against surcharge - are several driver assistance systems:

 Adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go feature

 Blind Spot Information System,

 Lane departure warning system,

 Night vision

 Head-Up Display,

 Integral Active Steering (rear wheel steering)

 xDrive (available only in the 750i/Li, for the first time on the 7 Series) (2010+)

 Rear view camera,

 Sideview (two cameras in the front bumper that look to the left and right)

 Topview (of the two additional cameras in the exterior mirrors, the side-view cameras,
reversing camera and sensors from the PDC to create an overall picture of the vehicle and its
environment, and show it from the air) and

 Speed limit display For this, a camera will check street signs with speed limits. These are
displayed in the speedometer, as well as head-up display.

BMW X5 SUV (E70)

The BMW E70 is the development name for the current X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). It replaced
the BMW X5 (E53) in November 2006. It is manufactured alongside the new, 2008 BMW X6 at
BMW's Greer, South Carolina plant in the USA and BMW's facility in Toluca, Mexico.

Design

The new generation BMW X5 is 60 mm (2.4 in) wider, 165 mm (6.5 in) longer; with a 110 mm (4.3 in)
longer wheelbase, but remains at the height of the E53 X5 at 1,766 mm (69.5 in).

Technology

The xDrive AWD system updates previewed in the facelifted X5 have continued with further detail
improvements for the E70. It uses a double wishbone suspension at the front. The manual
transmission is entirely dropped, leaving only the automatic transmission.

The E70 features many new technological advancements for this class as standard equipment
including BMW's iDrive system, electronic 'joystick' gearshift (no mechanical connection to the
gearbox to win space in the console), LED taillamps, the first ever all-polypropylene single module
fender module, and options such as head-up display HUD, active steering, active damping, and
Dynamic Drive which uses active anti-roll bars which use a hydraulic servo in the middle to actively
counteract body roll.

The interior of the new, larger, X5 is completely new. It has a large center-mounted display screen
and the simplified iDrive, a man-machine interface system also found in the rest of the BMW model
range. The E70 further incorporates many comfort options such as a glass panorama-roof, and, for
the first time in a BMW, an optional third row seat which has increased the seating capacity in E70 to
7 passengers, addressing criticism of the E53 model which had been regarded as being slightly too
small for this market segment.

The E70 is also the first production vehicle to use FlexRay, a new extremely fast electrical bus system;
it is only used for the control of the chassis damping system. The new 'joy-stick'-style electronic
space-saving shifter has since been adopted in the new 2008 BMW 5 Series.

For the 2010 model year the X5 received the new iDrive system and the BMW individual audio system
along with various other minor updates.

Technical features which are found in other BMW models use also:
 Active Steering- changes the steering ratio depending on the speed and driving style

 Adaptive Drive with active roll stabilisation and adaptive shock absorbers

 Head-up display - critical information projected onto the windshield

 Comfort Access - keyless access and engine start

 Daytime running lights on the "Corona Rings" around the main headlight units

 Four-zone climate control

New is the Park Distance system that can be integrated into the image of the optional rearview
camera.

South Africa

BMWs have been assembled in South Africa since 1968 when Praetor Monteerders' plant was
opened in Rosslyn, near Pretoria. BMW initially bought shares in the company, before fully acquiring
it in 1975; in so doing, the company became BMW South Africa, the first wholly owned subsidiary of
BMW to be established outside Germany. Three unique models that BMW Motorsport created for the
South African market were the E23 M745i (1983), which used the M88 engine from the BMW M1,
the BMW 333i (1986), which added a 6-cylinder 3.2 litre M30 engine to the E30 and the E30 BMW
325is (1989) which was powered by an Alpina-derived 2.7 litre engine.

Unlike U.S. manufacturers, such as Ford and GM, which divested from the country in the 1980s, BMW
retained full ownership of its operations in South Africa.

Following the end of apartheid in 1994, and the lowering of import tariffs, BMW South Africa ended
local production of the 5-Series and 7-Series, in order to concentrate on production of the 3-Series for
the export market. South African–built BMWs are now exported to right hand drive markets including
Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong, as well as
Sub-Saharan Africa. Since 1997, BMW South Africa has produced vehicles in left hand drive for export
to Taiwan, the United States and Iran, as well as South America
BMW's with a VIN number starting with "NC0" are manufactured in South Africa.

United States

BMW Manufacturing Co has been manufacturing the X5 and, more recently, the X6 in Greer near
Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA.[63] The smaller X3 has began production in Spartanburg. BMW's
with a VIN number starting with "4US and 5US" are manufactured in Spartanburg.

In 2010 BMW announced that it would spend $750 million to expand operations at the Spartanburg
plant. This expansion will allow production of 240,000 vehicles a year and will make the plant the
largest car factory in the United States by number of employees.[64]

India

BMW India was established in 2006 as a sales subsidiary in Gurgaon (National Capital Region). A
state-of-the-art assembly plant for BMW 3 and 5 Series started operation in early 2007 in Chennai.
Construction of the plant started in January 2006 with an initial investment of more than one billion
Indian Rupees. The plant started operation in the first quarter of 2007 and produces the different
variants of BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series.[65]

China

Signing a deal in 2003 for the production of sedans in China,[66] May 2004 saw the opening of a
factory in the North-eastern city of Shenyang where Brilliance Automotive produces BMW-branded
automobiles[67] in a joint venture with the German company.[68]

Canada

In October 2008, BMW Group Canada was named one of Greater Toronto's Top Employers by
Mediacorp Canada Inc., which was announced by the Toronto Star newspaper.[69]

Egypt

Bavarian Auto Group is a multinational group of companies established in March 2003 when it was
appointed as the sole importer of BMW and Mini in Egypt, with exclusive rights for import, assembly,
distribution, sales and after-sales support of BMW products in Egypt.

Since that date, BAG invested a total amount of 100 Million US Dollars distributed on 7 companies
and 11 premises in addition to 3 stores.

Currently, the facility enables Bavarian Auto the opportunity to offer a full range of locally assembled
models; including the BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series and X3 which. In combination with a new
range of imported models; including the BMW 1 Series, 6 Series, X5, X6 and various Mini models.
