Ahh,Spring!
Long Island’s new
crop of wines arrives
By Tracy Ellen Kamens
Spring is a time to cel-
ebrate new life and new
beginnings, so it’s fitting that
many wines crafted from
the 2010 harvest are mak-
ing their debut this season,
along with a number of
other wines that have been
slumbering in the cellar. This
new crop includes an array
of whites, rosés and reds that
pair well with spring’s palette
of fresh flavors.
Onabay Vineyards’ new-
est release is the 2007 Night
Heron. Chiara Anderson
Edmands, Onabay’s direc-
tor of marketing, calls this
their best quality red wine,
produced from the vaunted
Entav clone. Differing from
its 2006 predecessor, which
included small amounts of
Cabernet Franc and Syrah,
the warmer conditions of
2007 enabled Onabay to
produce a 100% Merlot
wine. Chiara notes that Night
Heron is a wine that “always
shocks people because of
the quality,” and suggests
that “it’s on par with some of

of Chablis, this wine sees
no wood, but does spend
time on the lees, adding to
the wine’s texture. With its
vibrant acidity, it pairs well
with citrus-accented dishes
and shellfish.
Macari Vineyards’ tast-
ing room welcomed the
release of its 2008 Cabernet
Franc and 2008 Dos Aguas.
Winemaker Kelly Urbanik
said that, while 2008 was
a difficult vintage in the
vineyard, these wines have
beautiful balance. As the
second Meritage-style blend
in Macari’s collection, Dos
Aguas (70% Merlot, 17%
Cabernet Sauvignon, 8%
Malbec, 4% Cabernet Franc
and 1% Petit Verdot) pres-
ents with soft tannins and
high acidity, although Kelly
emphasizes that this is “not
a wimpy wine.” Serve it with
hearty poultry or lighter
meat dishes.
From the 2010 vintage,
Macari’s Riesling, Rosé and
Sauvignon Blanc will soon be
available. The Finger Lakes
Riesling shows classic aromas
of petrol, honeysuckle and
peachy stone fruit. On the
palate, it’s dry and citrusy,
with nice acidity. Represen-

Blanc, Chardonnay and Rosé.
This year’s Coalescence, a
blend of Chardonnay, Sau-
vignon Blanc, white Merlot
and white Pinot Noir, has a
much higher proportion of
red grapes than in prior years.
This shift, coupled with the
riper vintage, resulted in a
wine with a richer, fuller body,
good texture and strawberry
and raspberry fruit character
that permit it to pair well
with meaty fishes and poultry
dishes. In contrast, the Sauvi-
gnon Blanc is much brighter
and acidic, making it a good
foil for fresh scallops.
Shinn Estate is offering two
new wines: an estate-grown
Pinot Blanc and an orange-
colored wine. The latter is
100% Chardonnay that was
fermented on its skins for
three to four weeks, imbu-
ing the wine with an orange
hue. It was produced from the
cooler 2009 vintage, taking
advantage of a “perfect storm”
of sufficient ripeness, high
aromatics and limited alcohol
to develop a wine with good
structure and tannins, while
still exhibiting vibrant acidity
and noticeable fruit. Shinn’s
2008 reds are also ready for
release.
Shinn’s winemaker, An-
thony Nappa, who also has
his own eponymous wine
label, will release a 2010

age worthy 2008 L’Enfant

“wild child” Chardonnay is
produced with ambient (wild)
yeasts and is barrel aged for
18 months, with long lees
contact. Other recent releases
include 2010 Mudd Vineyard

vineyard in Southold; and
2010 Mudd West Vineyard
Sauvignon Blanc, with grapes
from the 2005 Mudd vineyard

same way, the wines differ
in site and vine age, with the
former producing a wine that
is plumper, more delicate and
restrained, showing tree fruit,
white stone fruit, apple, peach
and some citrus, while the
latter is a more classic Sauvi-

citrus, cut grass, and white

Also fresh for spring is

9 December Edition
Wine Spectator

”Pellegrini... leads the way among Long Island Producers,

particularly with reds.” Three 90 point scores!

90 Pellegrini Reserve North Fork of Long Island 2005

Smooth and solid, this polished red delivers ripe black cherry and
plum flavors, with accents of chocolate, tar and mint. Not heavy,
but well-structured, with balance and grace. Merlot, Cabernet
Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. — T.M.

90 Pellegrini Chardonay North Fork of Long Island

Vintner’s Pride 2007 This rich white shows lavish oak flavors
of vanilla and toast, but there’s enough ripe pear and pineapple
fruit for balance, and firm acidity provides structure. A full-blown
style, but still lively. — T.M.

– and all that Jazz!
The hottest ticket on the North Fork this
winter was the fourth annual “Winterfest: Jazz on
the Vine” concert series. Presented by the Long
Island Wine Council and East End Arts Council
under the able leadership of LIWC executive
director Steve Bate and president Ron Goerler
Jr. and EEAC executive director Patricia Sny-
der, Winterfest drew about 6,000 jazz-loving,
winter-defying souls to 40 concerts at par-
ticipating wineries and hotels during February
and March. “Winterfest Warm-Up” events drew
ever-increasing crowds to the Hilton Garden Inn
on Friday nights, and Riverhead’s snazzy new
Hotel Indigo was the lively scene of “Live at the
Indigo” on Saturday nights. “Inside the Outside
of Jazz” discussions were held at Brecknock Hall
in Greenport, Southampton Cultural Center and
Riverhead’s historic Vail-Leavitt Music Hall.
This year’s jazzed-up crowds have raised
the hopes of all concerned for an even better
Winterfest in 2012, when half the revenue from
this year’s ticket sales will go toward funding the
ever-popular event. 4
