Understanding This User Guide

This user guide uses the following conventions:
• Bold text indicates names of program menus, menu
commands, buttons, options, text box labels, tabs,
check boxes, lists, and other items in the program.
• Text in italics refers to names of windows, dialog
boxes, discs, and folders. It is also used for chapter
and section references, and to introduce important
new terms.
• Menus and commands are given as Menu 
Command (for example, File  Print Shopping
List). For a command on a submenu, the sequence
is Menu  Submenu  Submenu Command (for
example, File  Import  Recipe File).
• A keyboard shortcut groups several keys that are
pressed together to apply a menu command. For
example, on a Macintosh computer, Cmd-P means
to hold down the Command ( ) key while pressing
the P key and then to release both of the keys. On
a Windows computer, Ctrl-P means to hold down
the Control key while pressing the P key.
• If you have a multi-button mouse, click means to
click the left mouse button. Right-click means to
click the right mouse button. Double-click means to
click the left mouse button twice quickly without
moving the mouse.
• You may have to adjust the instructions depending
on the version of Mac OS X or Windows operating
system installed in your computer.

Additionally, a gallery of images appears across the top
of the Recipe Browser (the Viewing area when showing

recipe or a default placeholder if the recipe doesn’t
have an image.

Recipe Manager User Guide

To support recipe scaling, if an ingredient has a

range for the Quantity, use a hyphen (-) between
the values (for example, 1-2 Cups). .
.
To have the shopping list ignore an ingredient, put
5 equal signs (=) on either side of the ingredient in
the Item column. (For example, if you always keep
plenty of sugar on hand, use =====Sugar=====
when adding it as an ingredient in a recipe.) This
will signal to the software that this item does not
need to be added to the list.
7 After adding all the ingredients, click the pointer
in the Directions box and type the directions or
instructions for preparing the recipe.
8 If needed, scroll below the Directions box and add
any additional information you have for this recipe:
Meal, Main Ingredient or Keywords.
.
The information in the Meal and Main Ingredient
boxes appears in the Recipe Browser. Keywords
are used when you search for a recipe.
9 If you have a digital photo of the recipe or a video
clip to include, drag and drop the file into the
box below the Drop Recipe Image or Video Below
heading..
.
You can add more than one digital photo to each
recipe. If you have iPhoto® on your Macintosh
computer, you can drag the photo directly from
there; otherwise, drag photos or movie files from
the desktop or a folder window.
10 Type the number of servings for the recipe into the
Serves box.
47
Using Recipes

11 To add preparation, idle, and cooking times, click

below the appropriate title (Prep, Idle or Cook on
the left side of the screen) and type the time in
hours and minutes (H:MM). .
.
For example: If a chicken dish needs to marinate for
30 minutes, include :30 of idle time..
.
Recipe Manager automatically calculates the total
time.
12 If you wish, type the source and any additional
notes for this recipe. .
.
(For example, if this is a recipe from a family
cookbook you inherited, you may want to include
the cookbook’s title and author.)
13 If you know the nutritional information, type that in
the Nutrition Facts area.
14 Click Save.

Note: To get nutritional information, choose View

 USDA Nutrient Database. You can search this
government database for nutritional information to
add to your recipes.

shown or the order of the columns by customizing
your version of Recipe Manager. See Chapter 3: Using
Recipe Manager for details.
By default, Recipe Manager sorts the recipes
alphabetically by name. You can re-sort the information
in the Viewing area by clicking a column. If you click a
heading again, Recipe Manager re-sorts the information
in reverse order. For example, if the recipes are shown
in alphabetical order by name, clicking the Recipe
Name heading changes the sort order from A-Z to Z-A.

Combining Entries in the Shopping List

When you view the Shopping List by ingredient, you
may notice several entries for the same ingredient.
When using the list at the grocery store, it would be
more helpful to have those ingredients combined. You
can do this easily when viewing the list by ingredient,
but you can combine items from any view.
To combine entries:
1 To view the Shopping List details, click the
Shopping List pane.
2 If you wish, specify By Ingredient on the toolbar for
the Shopping List.
3 Select the items to combine. .
.
In the ‘by ingredient’ view the items are grouped
together. To select adjacent items, select the first
item and then press the Shift key as you click the
last entry for this ingredient. To select items that
are not adjacent, press the Cmd key (Macintosh) or
the Ctrl key (Windows) as you click each item.
4 Click the Combine button on the toolbar.

Chapter 9:
Solving Problems
This chapter includes answers to some questions that
you might have about working with Food Network Recipe
Manager.

I want to import a recipe, but I keep getting an error

message.
Recipe Manager can only import recipes that are
*.fnrecipes files.
If you have a recipe as a text or word-processing file,
open it a word-processing application. Then create a new
recipe in Recipe Manager and copy and paste (or type) the
information into the recipe details in the Viewing area.

I’m trying to change a recipe, but I can’t.

The recipe may be locked. In this case, you can modify
and re-name a copy of the recipe, but you cannot change
original locked recipes.

I’m trying to delete a recipe that I don’t like, but I can’t.

You cannot delete recipes from provided, locked cookbooks.
You can only delete recipes that you’ve added to custom
cookbooks or from the My Recipes cookbook.

93
Solving Problems

the menu bar.
If.you’re.creating.or.editing.a.cookbook,.recipe,.or.meal,.

I’ve set up a timer, but for some reason I can no longer

see it.
If you’ve set up a timer and then done something else
with Recipe Manager (such as opened a recipe in the
Cooking View window), the timer is behind the active
window. To view the timer, choose Window  Kitchen
Timer - timer name to bring it forward again.

I’m having problems printing recipes or other

information.
To print a recipe, you must select a recipe in the Recipe
Browser. Also, if you’re editing a recipe, you must click
the Save button before you can use any commands.
Be sure that you’ve selected the correct printer in the
Print dialog box (Macintosh) or Job Setup dialog box
(Windows).
Try printing something from another application to that
printer. If you are still unable to print, the problem is
with the printer. Check the printer’s documentation for
troubleshooting information. If you can print from the
other application, check your print settings in both the
Page Setup and the Print dialog boxes (Macintosh) or
the Print Setup and Job Setup dialog boxes (Windows).

95
Solving Problems

I want to export a recipe, but the Export commands

aren’t available in the File menu.
To export a recipe, you must select a recipe in the
Recipe Browser.
Also, if you’re editing a recipe, you must click the Save
button before you can use any commands.
