WEEK 1: INTRODUCTION

Prepared by: Theong MC

HVAC – HEATING, VENTILATING AND AIR
CONDITIONING
 Heating – used in cold climate country
 Boiler / heat pump to heat water (heat transfer
medium / hydronics)
 Heating can also be provided from electric

 Filament becomes hot when electric current is

caused to pass through it
HVAC – HEATING, VENTILATING AND AIR
CONDITIONING
 Ventilating – a process that replacing air in any
space to control temperature
 includes both the exchange of air to the outside
as well as circulation of air within the building
 a) to provide adequate O2

 b) to remove unpleasant smells, excessive

moisture and heat

 2 types: natural & mechanical

 Natural Ventilation

 Without the aid of mechanical system

 opening
HVAC – HEATING, VENTILATING AND AIR
CONDITIONING
 Mechanical Ventilation
 Circulate air & control odors

 fan…types of fans?

 Filter – dry & wet?

 Air Conditioning – an air treatment mechanical

process to control temperature, humidity,
cleanliness and air distribution in an enclosed
space of a building
HVAC – HEATING, VENTILATING AND AIR
CONDITIONING
 Atmospheric factors
 Temperature: suitable temperature for human
being is 25oc
 Relative humidity (%): 40 – 60%

 Cleanliness: by air filtering

 Distribution: enclosed space

ELECTRIC SUPPLY - DEFINITIONS
 Electricity: a form of energy due to free movement of
electrons
 Conductor: material which allow an electric current to
flow – metals, water
 Insulator: material that resist the flow of electric
current – rubber, glass
 Ampere: unit of electric current

 Voltage: unit to measure the force which causes the

current to flow
 Watt: unit of power

 Watts (W) = volts (V) x ampere (A)

 Cable: conductors used in domestic installation

ELECTRIC SUPPLY
 Generated & supplied as an alternating current
 Single phase supply

 Two conductors carry three alternating currents (180o

apart)
 for lighting & heating

 Three-phase supply
 three circuit conductors carry three alternating currents

 most common method used by electric power distribution

grids to distribute power
 used to power large motors and other large loads

 less conductor material to transmit electric power

FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM
 3 basic elements required for FIRE
heat

fuel O2
 Application of heat ignition combustion
 Ignition: initiation of combustion

 Combustion: consumption by oxidation with the

production of heat usually with flame
FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM
 Class of Fire:
 A – SOLID except METAL

 B – FLAMMABLE LIQUID

 C – FLAMMABLE GASES

 D – METAL

 E – ELECTRICITY

 K – KITCHEN
