“40% Solution”
“If you put the federal government in charge of the Sahara Desert,
in 5 years there’d be a shortage of sand.” - Milton Friedman.
“Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until
you realize it was your money to start with.” - Unknown
“Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn’t mean
politics won’t take an interest in you.” - Pericles
With a federal election at hand, it is sad to realize that
approximately 40% of eligible voters will not exercise their
democratic responsibilities. There are indeed many reasons to
be cynical about politics, but not voting isn’t part of the solution.
Just about everyone I know has an opinion and ideas as to what
they would like from their government, but feel powerless about
creating any real change. Do you know why you are powerless??
Federal parties have very sophisticated means of identifying
what issues are important to people. They are also very advanced
in identifying who votes and who doesn’t. If 80% of seniors vote
and only 20% of young people exercise their right to vote …
guess who the parties will pay attention to!! If you vote, you will
get noticed!!
A majority government can be elected in Canada with about
40% support of actual voters, which is only 24% of all eligible
voters. The 40% of Canadians who do not vote have the power
to elect any party that they might want, including the “Mikie
Party”!! It is unfortunate that we do not have a write in ballot,
because The Jet would definitely get my vote.
I know how many people feel when faced with the unfortunate
situation where there is not one of the parties that you really
want to support. Or you are faced with the reality that your vote
is going to be wasted because the candidate frankly doesn’t have
a hope in winning. But, do you know that each party currently
receives $2 for every vote that they collect?? So sometimes, I
just have to feel good about the fact that I at least have provided
some support for the losing side.
With millions of people around the world struggling and even
dying to win the right to chose their government, it is an insult
to their hopes and aspirations, that we fail to exercise the right
to vote. Get off you’re butts and vote.
This has been an unpaid message from The Jet. More kibble in
every dish ... Vote now!! 800

News from the Riverbank: Remember that angling season opens

we ask all anglers to exercise caution when fishing in the lower

One more reminder: wear your PFD’s, especially in cold water
conditions we have in the early season!
Warning to local anglers and boaters: HRAA’s popular and
frequently-used boat launch was damaged during the high water
March 12th, and is not usable. Stay tuned, we’ll provide more
information as it becomes available. Its one of our priorities to
have the landing back in operation as soon as possible.
A sincere thanks to volunteers who helped with the renovations
of the downstairs of the HRAA building. Particular thanks to
George Floyd for the painting and Chris and Ursina Meier for
the beautiful shelving. Thanks as well to our loyal staff: Ursina,

QES – The Healthy Place to Be!
By Cameron Miller and Bryce Miller – Grade 5 students at QES
Did you know that at Quispamsis Elementary School healthy
choices are as easy as 1, 2, 3! Students and staff realize that
breakfast is the most important meal of the day so we have a
healthy breakfast program for students who need to eat when
they come to school. Every day staff and volunteers serve toast,
cereal, juice and fruit. At lunch, students can choose chicken
wraps or whole wheat pizza as healthy, hot lunch choices.
Classes at QES celebrate holidays such as Christmas, Valentines
and Halloween by bringing in healthy options such as cheese,
crackers, fruit and vegetable trays.
Not only do we eat healthy but we exercise and are physically
active too. Mme. Savoie and Mr. Tremblay offer their time at
lunch for intramurals in the gym. During intramurals the
students are able to try a new sport challenge and make new
friends. Fridays are great because at lunch the students are
invited to Fun Fitness Friday or Zumba! Did you know that
exercise can help students concentrate?
The students may also choose to participate in chess or cribbage.
These games help us use our brains and develop new thinking
strategies. At QES we have a Peer Helper program for the Grade
5 students. The Peer Helpers help the little ones to make good
choices on the playground and in the classroom. They also help
the secretary in the office during snack recess. This teaches peer
helpers to be responsible.
Healthy choices need to be recognized. That is why we have
a “Thumbs Up” award. This award encourages students to do
good deeds throughout the school year. Helping, sharing,
showing kindness, or paying a nice compliment are all choices
that we celebrate.
For all these reasons, QES is the best! Healthy Choices are
made here!!

Barbershopper of the Year
There was a hush over the room containing forty usually
energized, vocal women, as Margie Fife was announced as
the 2011 Sea Belle Barbershopper of the Year. The award was
presented following the installation of Sea Belles new Officers,
by last year’s recipient Judy McNab.
“I was totally surprised,” said Fife “as there are so many others
that are more than worthy of this award. This has been one of the
highlights of my 20 plus years of singing a cappella harmony!,
Fife added. Ms. Fife has been involved with Sea Belles Chorus on
and off since 1984 and before that she was a member of Chaleur
Echoes in Dalhousie, NB where as a young mother with two
young daughters, she was first introduced to ladies barbershop
music by a neighbour in 1979. In answering what Sea Belles and
barbershop singing has done for her, Margie states: “It has given
me life long friends, the confidence to perform and speak in
front of an audience. No matter what the day has brought you,
when you get to practice, just for those 2 ½ hours, you can
forget all the “stuff ” that has gone on during the day- it’s great
for your mental health!”
When not singing in a cappella harmony with other women,
Ms. Fife volunteers with many local organizations, or relaxes in
her custom built home in Mount Hebron, just outside Sussex
overlooking her trout pond, honey bee hives and large vegetable
garden that support her other love - cooking in her great kitchen.
Sea Belles meets every Tuesday evening at 7:00pm at Forest
Hills Elementary School. New members always welcome! Come
share your voice! For more information, contact Heather at 672-

Dear Editor:
In honour of National Volunteer Week, which was held April
10th-16th, the Canadian Cancer Society New Brunswick would
like to extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude to the many
thousands of volunteers across the Province who have joined us
in the fight against cancer.
Each year, Canadian Cancer Society volunteers dedicate their
time and skills to make a difference in the lives of people living
with cancer in New Brunswick. Their support allows us to fund
cancer research, advocate for healthy public policy, engage
people in prevention initiatives, and provide supportive care for
people living with cancer and their loved ones.
In 2010, an estimated 4,600 New Brunswick residents were
diagnosed with cancer, and an estimated 2,020 died from the
disease. With the support of our volunteers, we are making
progress in the fight against cancer. Today, approximately 62 per
cent of those diagnosed with cancer will survive, compared to
one in three in the 1960s.
Thank you to our volunteers for being part of the Canadian
Cancer Society team. Your commitment and dedication make a
difference every day to people in your community.

Dear Editor
April marks the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong – one
of the most significant battles fought by the Canadians in the
Korean War. As a member of The War Amps Operation Legacy,
a group of committed young people who are dedicated to
preserving Canada’s military heritage, I would like to highlight
this anniversary.
On April 24th-25th, 1951, the 2nd Battalion of Princess Patricia’s
Canadian Light Infantry engaged in the Battle of Kapyong. From
their stand on Hill 677, the Patricia’s managed to hold their
positions and re-open the supply route despite tremendous odds
and bitter fighting. The Canadian action at Kapyong stopped the
Chinese advance in this sector of the front for the rest of the war
and earned the battalion the US Presidential Citation for valour.
Canada sent 26,791 soldiers to battle in Korea. More than 1,200 ADULT VOLLEYBALL

Progress
We had a beautiful warm sunny spring day recently when I
happened to be at home. I was naturally inspired to change the
bed - what else would you do with a gorgeous spring day?!!!
My esteemed husband does not follow this logic of course, but
that is likely because all those summers collecting garbage as
a university student completely desensitized his nose. In my
books, there is absolutely nothing that smells as heavenly as a
bed freshly made up with bedding that has just come off the
clothesline. And the first time I can do that after the long winter
of using the dryer is especially heavenly.
I vividly remember as a kid the laundry spending hours on the
clothesline on winter days and coming in stiff as a board, frozen
solid and still wet (or at least quite damp) at the end of the day.
In fact, we did not have a modern washer at all, but one of the
wringer washers where you ran the clothes through the wringer
mechanism to remove the water (watch your fingers!) into a
rinse water and then back through the same wringer before
hanging them out to dry. My grandmother would have used a CHILD CARE
washboard, no electric washer or dryer. Three generations have ROTHESAY NURSERY SCHOOL is taking registration for 2011-
