Instruction

1. Each group (2 members) must choose a real-world mechanism and perform kinematic
analysis. There should not be any two groups with the same mechanism. Groups having same
mechanism will be automatically awarded 0 marks.

2. Each group is advised to follow the following guidelines:

• The mechanism must come from the real world application, e.g. lathe machine, lifting
mechanism, wheel suspension mechanism etc.

• It must be planar mechanism.

• Mobility of the mechanism should be one (one degree of freedom).

• The mechanism should not be too simple (e.g. single rotating link, parallel four-bar).

• Mechanism should consist of kinematic links. Gears are too simple and cams are too complex.

• 4-bar and slider-crank mechanisms are fine, but must come from a real-world machine.

3. If synopsis is not received by 4 March 2011, group members name and title will not be
registered and will be awarded 0 marks for the project.

4. Report should be typed using Microsoft Word or any other word processing document with
Times New Roman font size 12.

Scenario

The recent trend in current product design cycle times in industries imply that engineers must
obtain design solutions in a ‘short’ amount of time. They are content to obtain approximate
solutions that can be readily obtained in a reasonable time frame, and with reasonable effort. The
Multi body System Analysis (MSA) is such approximate solution techniques. As an engineer,
you have to understand the functioning of the commercially available MSA software packages.
In this assignment you will learn to use Solidworks Motion and apply it for solving simple real
time engineering problems.

Task

1. Find a mechanism found in any real world machine and send a synopsis of the project by 4
March 2011. Refer Appendix 1 for content of synopsis.

2. Draw the kinematic diagram of your mechanism. This should include all links and joints.

3. Link length should be measured or obtained from machine specification. If you are unable to
do so, you could estimate the length and state the reason clearly in the final report.
4. Determine the mobility (number of degrees-of-freedom) of the mechanism.

5. Specify the complete input motion in-terms of position, velocity, and/or acceleration.

6. Calculate angular displacement, velocity and acceleration of any link/component based on

theoretical approach.

7. Calculate the motion limits for your mechanism using theoretical approach.

8. Construct 3D CAD model that represent your mechanism. All components should be unit
thickness. Your are advised to use Solidworks CAD tool to model your mechanism.

9. Perform kinematic analysis on the mechanism for the entire range of input motion stated
above. This kinematic analysis could be done using Solidworks Motion tool.

10. Plot the following results :

a) Angular displacement, velocity and acceleration of all links vs. input motion (position
only)
b) Translational displacement, velocity and acceleration of an important
point/link/component in the mechanism. This is the most important point in the operation
of the mechanism.

11. Compare results obtained in 6 & 7 against 10.

12. Discuss the results obtained and write suitable conclusion.

13. Submit complete report by 25 March 2011 before 1200 hours. Refer Appendix 1 for the
suggested report format.

14. Present your project results orally to the lecturer. Both team members must contribute during
presentation. Presentation schedule will be distributed on a later date.
