Capturing the First

Moments of a
Butterfly Exploring
Its New World.

The Thoughts Behind

the Painting

This is one of my favorite paintings that I have ever
done. I enjoyed the rich colors that the scenery had that was
even more emphasized by the beautiful sunlight of that specif-
ic afternoon. I have a close attachment to this painting because
of the butterfly. Whenever someone passes in my family we
like to think they are reincarnated as a butterfly. This butterfly
in the painting was one that I had the pleasure of witnessing
hatch from its chrysalis. I captured a few photographs within
the butterfly’s first few moments of learning how to fly. Watch-
ing the butterfly learn how to use its wings and explore its
new environment was so intriguing. It reminded me that life is
really too short and that the amount of time I have to explore
new things and to make the most of what I have is crucial.
When painting I chose to add all of the bright colors on the
canvas first. This included things like the wings and the
flowers. I then dove into painting the darker areas. I chose to
add some color even to the black background in hopes that it
would pick up the colors I used in the butterfly and the flow-
ers. The paint used was very thin and light, I wanted the paint-
ing to look vibrant and for the colors to really pop.

Working with Reflections and

Watercolor

The Thoughts
Behind the Painting

I am naturally a very impatient person, and

unfortunately I have been cursed with the love for fine
detail. One of my favorite things to do is to examine
reflections. When I found this red tea pot I was mesmer-
ized by its ability to reflect and distort so much in its
environment. I knew that this was something I just had
to paint.
Working with color and seeing how colors mix
together in natural settings is something I think trans-
lates really well into art. This is why I decided to add the
lemons and the tea cup. The red, yellow, and blue, all
are on opposite ends of the color wheel and when added
together they pop on a composition.

“Working with color and

seeing how colors mix
together in natural settings is
something I think translates
really well into art”
Whenever I work with watercolors I always
have the most difficult time mapping out my lights. So
for this piece I started by drawing around the lights in
pencil and working around them when I applied the
watercolor paint to the paper.

The Thoughts
Behind the
Drawings
This project was to show the positive and
negative space in a composition, as well as to show
flat and textured surfaces. I chose the outline of Mary
Poppins because it is such a recognizable image and
it made the concept for the design light and fun. The
way that her body/umbrella sweeps across the page
guides the viewers eye through the piece.

“When deciding on what texture

to use I wanted to pick some-
thing related to Mary Poppins.”
When deciding on what texture to use I
wanted to pick something related to Mary Poppins.
I thought about doing kites but when I tried drawing
them they didn’t translate well on the paper when I
used colored pencil. Balloons worked better because
they were similar to kites but yet they provided more
texture to the composition. The black/negative space
is acrylic paint and the balloons and sky were done
using colored pencils.

Playing with Textures to Add

The Thoughts Behind the Drawings

Artwork and Words By: Katelyn I liked working with this still life because it
provided a lot of challenges for me as an artist when I
Peters was dealing with textures. I like to always experiment
with textures when drawing or painting. I feel like I
grow as an artist when I am learning how to draw the
intricate things in a compsition. I think using texture
when drawing can really strike the viewers eye.

“I feel like I grow as an

A simple still life can really be pumped up
when a lot of visual interest is added. Texture is an easy
way to practice making drawings look more accurate
as well as more interesting. The most challenging was
drawing the bird’s feathers. This was because the bird
was very dark and it was very difficult to see where the
lights and darks were in the composition.

About the Artist
Katelyn Peters
Artwork and Words By: Katelyn Peters

Katelyn Peters has been involved in the fine arts since the young age of 9 in 2000.
She got her start by drawing Justice League and Marvel superheroes until she moved on to
designing her own work. In 2007 Katelyn began interning for the Beverly Arts Center as a
costumer. Till this day she works closely with the Beverly Art Center where she has costumed
numerous shows and been seen in the center’s gallery exhibits and competitions. In 2010 she
even won second place their Teen Art Competition. At Marist High School Katelyn began to
develop more skills as she began experimenting with different projects and mediums during
her four years of taking all four levels of art classes. For her senior year in 2009 she even
received the prestigious Achievement in Art award for her graduating class.
Since then Katelyn has developed a love for drawing and painting. Her work uses
rich color and light to provide a vibrant composition. Conceptually she enjoys to make quirky
as well as some dramatic work ,which contains an important message. This can be anything
from individuality to breakthrough thoughts that she herself has found significant. She cur-
rently attends Saint Xavier University where she plans to graduate with her Bachelors in
Secondary Art Education in 2013. For the past year (2011) Katelyn has had the opportunity to
teach through the Beverly Arts Center’s Outreach Program ,which offers after school classes
to schools in the Chicago area. She has also worked as a manager since the opening of the
new Children’s Museum in Oak Lawn where she has developed her newfound talent of face
painting.
For the future Katelyn would like to continue to live in the Chicago where she grew
up. Her goals go much further than just teaching in Chicago land schools, but to open up her
own studio that can offer art programs and artistic outlets for the youth of the Chicago land
area. The arts are something Katelyn holds dear to her heart and she hopes that the same
impact it has had on her will be shared with her future students.
