Wax by Ferris™ fills a void among wax carvers. With their new silver and gold colored carving wax you can create finished
wax carvings that look more like actual jewelry than conventional carving waxes, making it easier for both jewelers and
their customers to visualize the finished piece. This new carving wax melts at approximately 240° F and is available in
ring tubes of many sizes, rods, slices and 1 lb. blocks. It has medium hardness and flexibility, which allows for extremely
fine detail, piercing and carvability. In addition to silver and gold carving wax, Wolf Wax by Ferris™ has a number of other
new waxes to make modelmaking easier and more efficient. These include a specially designed build-up and repair wax
that also comes in silver and gold colors, a new touch-up wax, relief wax and Wicked Sticky™, a highly tacky positioning

Tech Tip W hy Choose to Vacuum Cast?
Vacuum casting is an alternative method of casting that has certain advantages over the centrifugal method. Perhaps the biggest
advantage is cost. Since you will need a vacuum investing machine to remove air bubbles from investment anyway, why not cast
with the vacuum machine too, and save the expense of buying a separate centrifugal casting machine? Vacuum casting or rather
vacuum assisted casting is the favored method of large industrial casters and is the most common method used on large production
induction casting machines. Vacuum assisted casting can produce dense, defect-free castings quickly, safely, and dependably in a
compact space with some fairly basic technology. Vacuum casting works well with small casting runs too, as a single ring in a 2” x 3”
flask can sit on top of a chamber caster and benefit greatly from the powerful vacuum assist. If you use a Kerr Electro-Melt, vacuum
casting becomes even easier, almost as simple as pouring milk on your cereal.
EZ-Cast Vacuum Casting Machine

performance and to minimize damage from water contamination. Vacuum pump oil is special hydroscopic oil
that absorbs the water from the air as the air is being drawn thru the pump. When it becomes saturated it can
no longer do its job and water builds up in the pump causing unnecessary corrosion. Make it someone’s job
to regularly change your vacuum pump oil, especially in a production shop. Oil that becomes milky white is
a sure sign that it’s time for an oil change!

Steam Dewaxers
Steam dewaxers are used to safely remove injection waxes from casting
flasks without the offensive fumes that occur if wax elimination is done
in a burnout furnace. Steam dewaxers do not work with high plastic content
carving waxes like Ferris or Matt Carving waxes, or any wax that has a melt-
ing temperature in excess of 212° F. Steam dewaxers can remove up to 95%
of the injection wax inside a casting flask, leaving a greatly reduced amount
of wax that has to be burned out. Flasks that are steam dewaxed before the
burnout process will have less residual carbon buildup in the mold, produc-
ing a cleaner casting. The automatic one-hour timer on/off switch standard
on all our steam dewaxers helps prevent element burnout, but it’s a good
idea to keep a spare heating element on hand in case someone forgets to
keep the water level full and the element burns out. Our steam dewaxers

Using cuttlefish bone, press model directly between two pieces of cuttlefish
bone. The soft shell makes a smooth walled mold. Sprue, gates and vents are

low maintenance parts. Satellite burnout furnaces are available in two chamber sizes, a standard 8-1/2” x 9” x 6-1/4” or

Platinum casting requires different equipment from other precious
metal casting due to platinum’s higher melting temperature. The
vertical casting machine is used to ensure an initial rapid flow of this
hard-to-keep liquid metal and the 21” long arm provides the extra force
needed for heavier casts. The design of the vertical machine also helps
protect the operator from the accidental release of molten platinum, A

Kerr Electro-Melts are used primarily for melting gold and silver so it can be easily poured into ingots
or casting flasks. The maximum temperature that can be reached with an automatic electro-melt is
1121° C/2050° F. Manual control electro-melts reach a maximum temperature of 1093° C/2000° F. A
Electro melts are also commonly used for reclaiming, alloying and refining gold and silver. Electro-
Melts are not for use with Platinum or other metals that have melting temperatures above 2000° F.
Kerr Electro-Melts have been recently re-engineered to meet CE, UL and CUL certification. The only parts
that are the same are the crucibles. We stock replacement parts for both the new and the old generation
of Kerr Electro-Melts.
Kerr Standard Electro-Melts: Automatic or Manual Models

The 30 troy oz. gold capacity Kerr standard electro-melts are available in automatic or manual models.
The automatic models have a programmable digital control that allows the operator to set precise
melting temperatures without having to constantly monitor the controls. The automatic model also
helps to prevent dangerous temperature overshoot that will damage the expensive to replace heating
element. The automatic model will achieve a slightly higher maximum temperature, 1121° C/2050° F
vs. 1093° C/2000° F for the manual model. The manual model has a mechanical control and a built-in
pyrometer for monitoring the temperature. With the manual control you need to be careful not to
overshoot the maximum temperature! Both models will achieve 982° C/1800° F in 22 minutes and
have a gold capacity of 930 grams/30 troy oz., silver capacity is 775 grams/25 troy oz. Both models are

Tech Tip
To use Ingot molds you should first coat the inner surfaces of the ingot with soot or carbon. One way
to do that is to pass a candle flame under the surfaces you wish to coat. Machine oil or fat can also be
used. The surface coating acts like a parting agent and also helps form a smooth surface. The mold
must then be heated with a torch or in an oven before melting the metal and pouring.

A thick, creamy version of PMC clay. Used to fill joints and adhere
parts. Can also be used to form around organic objects. When fired, D
the organic object burns away revealing its texture in metal.

PMC 3™ Fine Silver Clay

The latest metal clay by Mitsubishi. Fires in the same amount of time
as PMC +, but at far less temperature (1290°, 1200°, 1110°). This makes
it great for combining materials such as glass or some stones. PMC 3
is also the strongest of the clays making it the best for rings and
clasps. After being fired it creates fine silver objects with the strength
of sterling silver. Shrinks 10% – 15%.

Casting
Sierra Kilns
These kilns are high quality programmable kilns that can be formatted for either PMC firing or casting flask burnout.
(See Casting Section for Sierra Kilns pre-programmed with burnout sequences). They make doing either process a breeze.
They come with a multi-program controller that is pre-programmed with settings for the three firing sequences that
are most often used for PMC, and PMC+ and one unprogrammed sequence you can create for yourself. The kilns have a
delay feature, so you can time your firing or burnout for your convenience. Each of these settings can be easily modified
and formatted for your needs including the pre-programmed firing sequences. These efficient ceramic fiber kilns operate
on normal household 120 volt current.
