INDUSTRY OVERVIEW
Pakistan’s energy requirement is increasing every year with the growing population and fast-paced industrial
development. At present, the country is facing a shortfall of more than 5,000 MW; therefore, to fulfill the energy
requirement of the country the Government is planning to add different power projects with a generation capacity
of 2966 MW and has allocated a budget of US$ 1.7 billion to upgrade the transmission and distribution network
by 2011. Over $1.5 billion of power generation machinery has been imported in 2009-10.
The country possesses total installed electricity generation capacity of 20,653 MW that produced more than
85,000 Gwh of electricity during last year. There are 22 IPPs currently operating in the country with the cumulative
installed capacity of 6688 MW. In the public sector the thermal generation capacity stands at 4844 MW and
the nuclear power generation capacity at 462 MW.
The hydropower potential is estimated at 59,773 MW while the existing hydro-generation capacity is 6704 MW.
In addition, the Government has allocated funds amounting to US$ 300 million in the current year for the
construction of dams.
Pakistan has one of the largest coal reserves in the world which are estimated at over 185 billion tonnes. The
current production of coal is 2.27 million tonnes while 4.8 million tonnes are being imported to meet the total
consumption of 7 million tonnes. Moreover, the renowned Thar coal project has the potential to fulfill the national
energy demand for decades at a relatively low unit cost.

RENEWABLE ENERGY – THE ULTIMATE STRATEGIC SOLUTION:
Renewable energy is also being promoted as an attractive option for the country not just to produce electricity
in order to bridge the power-deficit but also to have cost effective, environment friendly and sustainable energy
supply. The Government is encouraging alternative energy through its Rural Electrification Program and plans
to electrify about 8000 off-grid villages by providing solar and wind energy solutions over the next few years.

WIND POWER
Wind energy resources are abundantly available across
Pakistan with the total potential of approx 346,000 MW,
which can be effectively and efficiently utilized for
economical generation of Power. Therefore, wind energy
is envisaged as an important component of its future
energy mix.

Keeping in view the huge potential and anticipated future

energy needs, the Government is currently facilitating
22 wind power projects with the generation capacity of
50 MW each, which are at different stages of
development.

SOLAR
Pakistan receives high levels of solar radiation which is
available at a rate of 1,000 watts per square meter.
Currently, solar energy is being successfully utilized for
household applications and electrification of remote
villages. Over the last 3 years 3000 Solar Home Systems
have been installed in the Sindh province under rural
electrification program.

BIODIESEL
With the rising international fuel prices, Biodiesel is set
to become a popular fuel option in the agricultural,
transportation and industrial sectors. The Government
plans to gradually introduce Biodiesel Fuel Blends with
petroleum diesel so as to achieve a minimum share of
5% of Bio Fuels by volume to the total diesel consumption
in the country by year 2015.

Power Technology Pakistan has established itself

WHY EXHIBIT AT as a premier energy exhibition in the region for the

past 8 years. It offers an ideal opportunity to promote
latest technology, products and services related to
POWER TECHNOLOGY power generation, transmission and distribution.
The show will once again provide a perfect platform
