ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO CATHOLIC CHARITIES COLLECTION May 2011
Dear Friends in Christ,
The Season of Easter is a season of hope. This year, the Catholic Charities Collection on Mother’s Day very
appropriately occurs during this holy season. The life, death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ won
for us the gifts of salvation and hope. On Mother’s Day, we celebrate the life-giving love and devotion of the
heroic women who modeled and passed on to us the gifts of hope and faith.
During the Season of Easter, the readings reiterate themes of the new life that is ours in the Risen Christ. As
Catholics, we are people of hope who share this gift with our brothers and sisters of all faiths, especially
those who are in need. For 93 years, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago has restored hope to
poor or struggling families and individuals, because hope is what matters most to a homeless family with a
parent out of work, or a senior on a limited income who lives alone.
Last year, more than a million people of all ages, races and religions received services through Catholic
Charities’ 159 programs at 156 sites in Cook and Lake Counties. Seniors, parents and children, pregnant and
parenting teens, and hungry and homeless families and individuals come to Catholic Charities hoping to find
the basic necessities to maintain life: food, clothing, housing, parenting skills and a renewed sense of dignity.
They find professional and compassionate help to ease their anxiety, work their way out of poverty, build
healthy family relationships, and solve the problems that keep them from independence and financial self-
sufficiency.
From conception to natural death, Catholic Charities strives to maintain the dignity and respect to which
every human being is entitled. As our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI stated in his encyclical letter on
Christian hope, Spe Salvi: “The one who has hope lives differently; the one who hopes has been granted the
gift of a new life.” Thank you for your continued gift of hope, your charity and your willingness to open your
hearts in prayerful and practical support of the poor and vulnerable with your gift to the Catholic Charities
Collection on Mother’s Day.
May Mary, the Mother of Jesus and of the Church, and her Divine Son bless you and your families with
hope, peace and joy as you celebrate Mother’s Day and the Easter Season. You and those you love are in my
prayers; please keep me in yours.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.

FROM FR. TOM GRIFFIN

Dear St. Albert Parishioners,
Hi, remember me? Here is my latest update: 2010 was a surprisingly great year up here in the De-
troit Archdiocese for me in all ways. I truly didn't mind being sent up here. However, 2011 is start-
ing out to be another story. The major news is this: On Saturday, March 26, I was running a gym
night for the teen club at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI. I do their Sun-
day night teen Mass most of the time from my old "rent-a-priest" days. They are a very friendly
bunch of kids and had been "inviting" me to get the keys to the gym from the pastor to start playing
some ball. I fell for it. That night , while playing indoor football with them, and for no apparent rea-
son, I completely tore my achilles tendon. Result: 2 months in a cast (minimum) and another 2
months in a boot for therapy. In the casted time, no flying or driving. In the booted time, no driv-
ing. It is my right foot. If not healed in the alloted 2 months, worse or simply longer treatment
plans. I won't bore you with the details, but my video poker is no better.
Spiritually speaking, I believe in purgatory and that some or all of it can take place right here
on planet earth. This one should get me to heaven.
Fraternally, Fr. Tom Griffin, O.S.A.
GOD’S PLAN
Saint Peter speaks to us twice today. In the first reading, we hear an excerpt from his sermon
on Pentecost; in the second, part of his first letter. Once a frightened, uneducated fisherman who of-
ten said just the wrong thing, now Peter is speaking what he knows to be true. Everything Jesus had
said now makes sense. His death and rising were all part of God’s plan, and our faith and hope can
be centered on God.
Today’s Gospel tells the story of Jesus’ walk to Emmaus with two of the disciples. Frightened,
sad, and confused, the two of them don’t recognize Jesus, who tells them what we heard Peter say
above: All this had to happen as part of God’s plan. In the end, these disciples recognize Jesus as we
are to recognize him—in the breaking of the bread. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

ARCHDIECEZJA CHICAGO SKLADKA DLA KATOLICKIEJ ORGANIZACJI CHARYTATYWNEJ Maj 2011r.
Drodzy Przyjaciele w Chrystusie,
śmierci i zmartwychwstaniu naszego Pana, Jezusa Chrystusa, otrzymaliśmy dar zbawienia i nadziei. W Dniu
przekazały nam dar wiary i nadziei.
W zeszłym roku ponad million osób w różnym wieku - ludzie różnych wyznań, rasy i religii - otrzymało
pomoc za pośrednictwem stu pięćdziesięciu dziewięciu programów Katolickej Organizacji Charytatywnej
prowadzonych w stu pięćdziesięciu sześciu lokalizacjach powiatów Cook i Lake.
podstawowe potrzeby życiowe: potrzeba żywności, ubrania i dachu nad głową.
XVI, w swojej encyklice o nadziei chrześcijańskiej Spe Salvi: stwierdził: “Kto ma nadzieję, żyje inaczej;
Charytatywnej z okazji Dnia Matki.
Szczerze oddany w Chrystusie,
Francis Kardynał George, O.M.I. Arcybiskup Chicago
