Street
Exhibition
Alrov Mamilla, Jerusalem
Alrov Mamilla Avenue is the unique
setting for an exhibition of art
works inspired by fairy tales and
legends from various cultures and
traditions. Some of the characters on
display range from classic fairy tale
characters to characters from Jewish
literature, the Bible, Greek myths and
Nordic mythological heroes.
This creative spectacle brings
enjoyment to young and old alike
and is a rare opportunity to expose
children to great works of art with
which they can identify drawing from
their knowledge of the tales they are
familiar with.
A year in planning, this exhibition
showcases the work of 54 renowned
artists who have displayed their
works galleries and museums
throughout the world. Most of the
pieces were created especially for
this exhibition and include bronze and
stone sculptures and oil paintings. In
addition to the name of the art work,
a quote from the story of the featured
character brings it to life and adds
to the wonder, magic and mystery of
their stories.
This exhibition is a rare opportunity to
see and experience art in an inviting
and interesting space, in a vibrant

A New and Unusual Family
Attraction
This unique botanical-ecological
garden includes an indoor, air-
conditioned orchid park in which
some 20,000 orchids from different
species grow; a rain forest with tens of
thousands of tropical plants including
carnivorous plants, waterfalls and
lush greenery; a butterfly garden
where hundreds of beautiful butterflies
flourish; an animal park with a wide
variety of animals and birds and two
plant mazes, one designed in the
classical English style and the other,
a more challenging ficus maze on two
levels and spread over 2000 meters.
The large, well-shaded outdoor area

Holy Week in
Jerusalem –
Easter
Mar 28 – Apr 5
Thousands of Christian pilgrims
from all denominations and ethnic
backgrounds travel to Jerusalem,
as they complete what is for some
the spiritual journey of a lifetime and
partake in the most important event in
the religious calendar of the Western
World - the Passion of Christ.
Holy Week recounts and re-enacts
the events leading up to and including
the death of Christ with a host of
processions, services, masses and
liturgies. The ancient city of Jerusalem
is the stage where the final days,
death and resurrection of Jesus Christ
were played out.
On Sunday beginning the Holy Week,
crowds congregate on the Mount of
Olives to re-enact Christ’s triumphant
entry into Jerusalem. A focal point of
interest on Wednesday of Holy Week
is the Coenaculum, better known as
the place of the Last Supper. Good
Friday, as in history, is a time of
high drama for modern-day Easter
visitors. Throngs of worshippers
(many of them carrying modern-day
crosses) follow in Jesus’s footsteps
on his last journey down the street
“Via Dolorosa” stopping for worship
at each of the 14 “Stations of the
Cross”, locations commemorating
incidents that happened during that
last fateful walk ending in Church of
the Holy Sepulcher, traditional site of
the crucifixion, burial and resurrection
of Jesus.

Holocaust
Martyrs’
and Heroes’
Remembrance
Day
(Yom Ha’Shoah)
Eve of Apr 11 - Apr 12
This national Day of Remembrance
is dedicated to the memory of Jewish
Holocaust victims and those who
fought to save them.
On the eve of this day an official
ceremony is held at Yad Vashem, a
massive complex which is Israel’s
official memorial and a historical
institute devoted to the Holocaust,
and is attended by many dignitaries,
including the Israeli President and
Prime Minister, as well as survivors of
the Holocaust and their children.
During the ceremony six torches are lit
in memory of the millions of Jews who
were murdered during the holocaust
(1939-1944).
All business and public entertainment
venues are closed from around 4pm
on April 11until the next morning. On
April 12 at 10am a one minute siren
is sounded and the whole country
effectively stops and citizens stand
silently in remembrance.

Israel’s
Memorial Day
(Yom Ha'Zikaron)
Evening Apr 18 – Apr 19
Israel’s Memorial Day (Yom
HaZikaron), commemorated the day
before Israel’s Independence Day is
devoted to the memory of those who
have given their lives so the State of
Israel can exist today.
Ceremonies are held throughout the
country at schools, cemeteries, and
memorial sites. A one-minute siren
is blown on the eve of Memorial
Day heralding the start of the official
events at 8pm and a two-minute siren
is blown on the morning of Memorial
Day at 11am. During the siren, the
whole country comes to a standstill
- people stop working, children stop
playing, and even drivers stop driving.
Everyone stands at attention in
silence as the siren wails in memory
of the fallen. It is an emotional time as
Israelis unite in their sorrow and this
is a day of collective and personal
anguish mingled with awe and honor
for the fallen soldiers and victims of
terrorism.

The celebration of Independence
Day commemorates the declaration
of the independent State of Israel by
David Ben Gurion in Tel Aviv on May
14, 1948.
Days before the celebration, Israelis
adorn their houses and cars with the
Israeli flag and a festive atmosphere
fills the air.
Israel’s Independence Day begins
the minute Memorial Day ends, and
the switch from sorrow to joy is quite
sudden and dramatic. Fireworks
displays all over the country fill
the night and are a sure sign that
Memorial Day has ended and
Independence Day has begun. Tel
Aviv’s Rabin Square is famous for its
holiday festivities and the huge crowd
sings and dances during a night-long
outdoor party.
Parties are held around town all night
long and the streets are packed with
crowds the next day celebrating and
enjoying the street attractions in the
city centers.
On Independence Day, which is a
public holiday, the favorite pastime is
packing a picnic basket, finding the
perfect spot in one of the many parks
and forests, enjoying a traditional
barbeque meal, family time and the
outdoors.

promenade and beaches of the
Mediterranean Sea to witness an
impressive display of a flyby show
by the Israeli Air force and a naval
parade by the Israeli Navy.

Capernaum

Capernaum (Kfar Nachum) served as
Jesus’ home base during his ministry
in the Galilee and was a thriving
Christian community. After the Arab
conquest around 700 CE the town was
destroyed. The town’s synagogue and
house of St. Peter have been restored
and made into a museum.
Cana
The traditional site of the wedding
feast where Jesus performed his first
miracle of turning water into wine and
the hometown of the disciple
Nathaneal. The modern town of Kfar
Cana is built on this site.
Mount of the Beatitudes
The traditional site of the Sermon on
the Mount is today is tranquil garden
with a Franciscan church featuring
the eight beatitudes in stained glass
and provides a good vantage point to
view the Sea of Galilee.
Nazareth
The largest church in the Middle
East, the Church of the Annunciation,
where it was revealed to Mary that
she would conceive and give birth
to the Son of God, is to be found
in this city, the childhood home of
Jesus. Gaze in awe at the view of
the magnificent Jezreel Valley or
experience 1st century life at the
Nazareth Village.

On the northern shore of the Sea of

New EXHIBITION
Tel Aviv Museum of Art
THE SCULPTURE OF EDGAR DEGAS
The exhibition presents, for the
first time in Israel, Edgar Degas’
(1834–1917) 74 sculptures in bronze.
The bronzes were cast from plasters
made directly from Degas’ original
waxes. Degas worked in various
artistic media: oils and pastels,
etchings and photography, painting
on monotype plates and sculptures
in wax, as well as writing poetry. He
exhibited only one sculpture in his
lifetime: “The Little Dancer, Aged
Fourteen” – a realistic wax sculpture
which he dressed in real clothes
which aroused much curiosity and
criticism when presented in 1881 at
the sixth Impressionist exhibition in
Paris. His sculptures focus on five
main themes, presented here as five
chapters: dancers in motion, dancers
behind the scenes, bathers, portraits
and horses. Exhibition runs from
March 26 until June 26.

The Museum for Islamic Art‬‬
“Afghanistan‬‬:‫‫‬‪ Landscapes from
Beyond the Horizon”
Photographed and curated by
Helmut R. Schulze a renowned
German photo journalist, this
photographic exhibition follows his
journeys across Afghanistan, a land
of wild landscapes and bitter wars,
Schulze portrays stunning views
and its people, their daily lives and
hardships.
Visiting Afghanistan several times
between 2002 and 2008 during
all four seasons Schulze and his
small team travelled about 4.000
kilometers throughout the country.
The team accompanied military
patrols to desolate villages where
Schulze photographed breathtaking
landscapes from the ground and

Israeli and international artists
relate in their work to various types
of collecting, while examining the
aesthetic syntax of various kinds of
collections and the psychological
aspects of collecting and of the artist-
collector’s obsessive world.
