In 2011, Normandy is celebrating its 1100th

anniversary and is delighted to invite you to join
in the festivities!
In the year 911, the Frankish King Charles the Simple was driven to concede
«the land from the River Epte to the sea» to the Viking chief Rollo. A few decades
later, Normandy had successfully asserted itself as the foremost of the fiefs of Kingdom of
France. The Vikings had become Normans and had proven their skill as wise
administrators, reorganising this vast territory that was soon to see the advent of
that extraordinary warrior, William the Conqueror.
The programme of events proposed throughout Normandy during this centenary year
offers a marvellous opportunity not only to discovery Normandy’s exceptional history
and heritage, but also the great diversity of this dynamic and modern region.
Medieval fairs, sound and light shows, exhibitions, treasure hunts, concerts and
walking tours are all on the agenda, just for you.
Several tourist attractions and trade outlets will be offering surprises or special
deals... in particular - in honour of our illustrious ancestors of course - for those of
you who are lucky enough to bear the name of William or Matilda! All of these special
gestures are «1100% made in Normandy».
So, feel free to unveil your hidden Viking spirit and set off to conquer Normandy.
You can consult all of the events and the detailed programme at

En 2011, la Normandie fête son 1100ème anniversaire

et vous invite à le célébrer avec elle !
C’est par le traité de Saint-Clair-sur-epte, en 911, que le roi des Francs, Charles le Simple,
fut en effet contraint de concéder au chef viking rollon, « toutes les terres de l’epte jusqu’à
la mer ». Quelques décennies plus tard, la Normandie s’affirme comme le principal fief du
royaume de France. Les Vikings, devenus les Normands, se révèlent des administrateurs
avisés et s’emploient à ré-organiser ce vaste domaine, dont héritera bientôt un guerrier
hors du commun, Guillaume le Conquérant.
L’ensemble des événements qui vous est proposé durant toute cette année, à travers toute
la Normandie, est une formidable occasion de partir à la découverte de l’histoire et
des patrimoines exceptionnels de la Normandie, mais aussi de toute la richesse et
de toute la diversité de la Normandie actuelle.
Des fêtes médiévales, des sons et lumières, des expositions, des chasses au trésor,
des concerts, des balades, ont été organisés pour vous.
De nombreux sites touristiques et de nombreux commerces vous attendent avec des

surprises ou des réductions … notamment pour les Mathilde et les Guillaume, clin d’œil
historique oblige ! Ce sont les petites attentions « 1100% normandes ».
