. Worksheet 1.1: Anatomical terms

1. To aid your study of anatomical terms, complete the following tables

with definitions of the given terms:

Directional
Definition
term
Superior Toward the head end or upper part of a structure or
(cranial) the body above.

Inferior Away from the head toward toes or lower part of the
(caudal) body

anterior Toward the front of the body

(ventral) (in front of)
ie. Breastbone is anterior to the spine

posterior Toward the back of the body: behind

(dorsal)

medial Toward or at the midline (centre line) of the body:on the

inner side of
ie.Heart is medial of the arm

lateral Away from the midline of the body:on the outer side of
ie The arms are lateral to the chest.

proximal Closer to the origin of the the body part or the point of
attachment of a limb to the body trunk

distal Farther from the origin of a body part or the point of

attachment of a limb to the body trunk

Superficial Toward or at the body surface

(external)

deep Away from the body Surface: More Internal

cephalic ANT - Frontal, Orbital, Nasal, Oral, Mental

POS – Otic, Occipital (back of Head)

caudal Toward the tail

ipsilateral Same side of the body

2

contralateral originating from or affecting the opposite side of

the body

Intermediate Between a more medialand a more lateral

structure

Ie. The collar bone is intermediate between the

breast bone and the shoulders.
