3D MODELLING
3D models of the concrete and reinforcement are created.
These 3D models are then brought together to create a Single

between the concrete outline, the prefabricated cages, Rollmat
and loose reinforcement.

A (SME) identifies areas of clash between reinforcement

used by consultancies to accelerate the checking process and
is a powerful visual aid during the construction process.

rollmat | 07

Rollmat ‘carpet’ reinforcement, as the name suggests, is a

one directional mat of prefabricated reinforcement supplied to
site as a roll, ready to be installed in position just as you would
a carpet.

Each roll consists of the reinforcement required for a particular

layer, either B1, B2, T1 or T2. The reinforcement is welded, at
the required centres, to thin metal straps and rolled around
metal formers and rebar collars which provide a solid core to
the Rollmat, and eliminates any fear of collapse or crushing.

The Rollmat, once manufactured, is supplied with a unique

positioning system and two suitable lifting strops which are
placed on the roll for a totally balanced lift. These lifting strops
can be used to lift the Rollmats from the delivery vehicle to a
storage area and then directly into position on the slab.

Due to the robust method of manufacture, there is no need for

any other form of lifting beam.

For Health & Safety reasons, the lifting strops are a single life,
throw away item.

health & safety Pre-stropped for safe handling on site
From a Health & Safety point of view, Rollmat can reduce the CARES approved material and manufacture
total amount of bar required as well as eliminating the piles of
loose bar on site, which could cause injury to steel-fixers trying
to sift through them to find the appropriate bar Mks. Also, by
rolling out up to 5 tonnes of bar in one go rather than fixing
individual bars, the risk of ‘repetitive strain injury’ to steel-
fixers could be reduced.

chairbeams
Any height or length of heavy duty rebar and machine
made chairbeams can be manufactured and supplied to suit
slab depths.

headed anchor couplers

‘Ancon’ headed couplers help to reduce congestion and simplify
the placement of Rollmat or rebar by removing the need for
hooked ends on pile or column bars into a slab.

accessories
Express Reinforcements can provide all necessary standard
construction accessories to complete a project, along with
some specials to aid in the laying of Rollmat.

shearform ladders
Express can provide a system of prefabricated shear links to be
manufactured to the Engineers design and laid in conjunction
with Rollmat to further speed up the slab construction.

technical support
Express Reinforcements are able to convert a standard mesh or
rebar design into a cost and time effective Rollmat design.

Working in conjunction with the structural engineer, on behalf

of the client or contractor, a scheme can be designed and
drawn to maximise working practices for all parties concerned.

Fully detailed scheme and layout plans will be provided, along

with onsite help and support throughout the term of the
project.

A representative can also attend site for the initial laying of the
first Rollmats to advise and support on best practice. With
contractors now increasingly being required to detail their own
projects, Express Reinforcements are happy to be involved in
the project at the earliest possible stage to assist with the
design and detail, and avoid any unnecessary re-detailing time.

ASSET International Ltd. manufacture WEHOLITE HDPE pipe

under licence from KWH Pipes Limited of Finland, at their
modern manufacturing facility in Newport.

ASSET International Ltd. provide a comprehensive range of

products and services to the construction and related
industries. Product applications include storm water
attenuation, sewers, drainage and culverts.

ASSET International Ltd. provide a full supportive technical

service from design through to the final installation and can

LiteSpeed
LiteSpeed is a revolutionary prefabricated system which utilises
HDPE structured wall pipe (Weholite) in the formation of
bespoke Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) chambers, to give a
solution that is expected to reduce the on-site construction
costs of CSO chambers.

The straight-forward bespoke design of the LiteSpeed chamber

means it can be manufactured to any size. Combined with the
relatively lightweight properties of the Weholite pipe, the
overall weight is reduced dramatically. LiteSpeed has
substantial benefits using the developed plastic structure in
comparison to traditional concrete or other modular products.

LiteSpeed was initially used for storage

provision and developed to include screen chambers for remote
sites with poor access or soft ground. Manufacturing
challenges of large slots in the pipe for access have been
overcome and all components of a CSO, including flow control
devices, are fitted inside the pipe.

WEHOLITE
WEHOLITE structured wall pipes were developed in the 1980’s,
and have continuously captured markets worldwide.

Speed and economy of installation together with product

quality and durability, has been recognised in both the public
and private sector who have chosen WEHOLITE HDPE as the
preferred solution. In the UK ASSET WEHOLITE is a quality
assured product BS EN ISO 9000 : 2000, Certificate
No. FM 12306.

ASSET WEHOLITE provides all the technical advantages of

polyethylene solid wall pipes, but substantial savings in weight
and ease of installation often minimises overall installed costs
compared with traditional materials.
It is certificated by WRc, BBA, WIS 4-35-01 and 'approved for use

safety barriers | 13

With higher traffic flows - often at higher speeds - service yards and access roads are among the most dangerous areas of an
industrial or commercial site. The Berry Spring Steel Buffa range of products has been independently tested for vehicles ranging
from 1.5 tonnes to 40 tonnes impacting at up to 10mph (4.5 m/sec). As a basic rule, any barrier dealing with Heavy Goods Vehicles
should be at least 760mm high from ground level (900mm if dealing with reversing trucks) and with post centres no more than
1600mm apart.

Single Height Barriers

Exterior Rigid Berry Barrier
The exterior version of the Rigid Berry barrier is 760mm high
and is designed to absorb less severe impact on a regular
basis. On impact, the loading is transferred to the footings.
The posts are available in bolt down or cast-in versions.

Exterior Rigid Berry Barrier

Exterior Spring Steel Buffa

Ideal for absorbing impacts from cars and light commercial
vehicles at speeds up to 10mph. The barrier will deflect
between 300mm and 400mm reducing damage to both the
barrier and the vehicle. Sufficient space must be allowed
behind the barrier for this deflection.

Exterior Spring Steel Buffa

Flexi-Post Berry Barrier

The Flexi-Post Berry Barrier system is uniquely engineered to
be able to withstand regular heavy impact of up to 10 tonnes.
This is done through the rubber shock absorbers positioned
within the post socket. This offers a perfect solution to prevent
damage when using conventional barrier rail and is suitable to
protect all areas of a service yard including storage tanks,
buildings and substations. Handrails can be added as required.

Flexi-Post Berry Barrier

Heavy Duty Buffa

The Heavy Duty Buffa can absorb the impact of a 40 tonne
vehicle travelling at 10mph (glancing blow impact). It is ideal
for all service yards and access roads used by HGVs.

Double Height Barriers

All the above systems are available in double height options to Heavy Duty Buffa
take account of differing bumper heights.

34 | gabions

gabion baskets
Gabions are rectangular boxes which are formed from panels
of ‘triple twisted’ mesh which are framed by thicker selvedge
wires. End panels and internal diaphragms at 1.0m centres are
then wired to the base of the gabion. The triple twist weaving
of the wire prevents unraveling.

Mattresses are also rectangular boxes which are larger in

area and thinner in depth than gabions. They are made with
a smaller mesh size and a thinner wire to provide a higher
degree of flexibility. Like the gabions, the mesh is framed by a
thicker selvedge wire but due to the larger size of the mattress
the lid is made of a separate panel of mesh to the base.
Additional end panels and internal diaphragms at 1.0m centres
are then wired to the base of the mattress.

GABION BOXES AND MATTRESSES are constructed from wire

manufactured to comply with BS1052:1996 and self edged with
thicker wire.

Wire is galvanised in accordance with BS 443:1990, with

minimum thickness complying with the requirements of table
4 of BS 443.

PVC-U coating (minimum thickness 0.5mm) can be supplied

where specified after galvanising and before weaving.

positional splices type C

When neither bar can be rotated, or if the angular position
of the second bar matters, GRIPTEC® position splices type C
are the answer. This is a variant of the position splice type
B that bears an additional lock-nut. They are also available
in sizes 12 through 56.

The GRIPTEC® mechanical splice system consists of

threaded sleeves that are fixed onto the reinforcing bar ends.
A combination of male and female sleeves creates
the connection.

Female sleeves are generally used on first-phase bars, in order

to ease the closing of the formworks. Male sleeves are
generally used on continuation bars.

situation where bars of different sizes, that both cannot be
rotated, need to be spliced. It is a combination of GRIPTEC®
transition and position type C.
standard splices
Standard GRIPTEC® splices are accomplished by use of
a standard female coupler and a standard male coupler
of the matching size. They are available in diameters 12
through 56.

end anchorages
End anchorages, or headed bars, conveniently replace
hooked bars as anchoring in congested areas. They can also
be used as confinement where placing of stirrups is
difficult, or to reduce lapping length.

transition splices
When there is a need to splice bars of different sizes, the
GRIPTEC system uses standard female couplers, simply
joining them with a special two-stepped threaded stud.
This conveniently avoids the difficult task of planning in
advance the location of transitions.

dimensions
GRIPTEC® end anchorages are produced in circular shape.
Two sizes of circular heads are proposed. The large heads,
with a net area ten times the cross-section area of the
reinforcing bar, do not need any development length.

LENTON® Terminator
LENTON TERMINATOR provides an alternative to hooked rebar or an anchor or stop nut for rebar passing through a pile plank or
structural steel element. The front face of the coupler is generously designed to carry the full tension load of the rebar when the
anchor is bearing against concrete or structural steel.

LENTON Weldable Couplers

LENTON weldable couplers provide a quick and easy solution for connecting reinforcing bar to structural steel sections or plates.
Similar to the standard coupler, the weldable coupler is internally taper threaded on one end with the other end prepared for welding.
These couplers are machined from weldable grades of materials such as A.I.S.I. 1018, 1030, 1035 or St 52.5, depending on rebar size.
The couplers are usually arc welded to the structural steel in a fabricating shop. The design of the weld, the selection of electrode and
other relevant choices depend on the chemical and physical properties of the structural steel to which the couplers are welded.

reinforcement continuity system | 39

The Eazistrip Reinforcement Continuity System is a quick and

easy to install method of maintaining continuity of
reinforcement at construction joints in concrete. It consists of a
galvanised steel casing with a dimpled surface toprovide an
effective concrete bond. Pre-bent bars are housed within the
casing and are enclosed by a protective cover. Each end of the
unit is sealed with a polystyrene block in order to prevent the
ingress of concrete. The unit is nailed to the formwork and the
concrete is cast.
After striking the formwork, the cover is removed and the bars
straightened, ready for lapping onto the main reinforcement.

benefits
 Accelerates the construction process
 Simplifies formwork design
Removes the need to drill shuttering
 Casing protects bars until required
Risk of site injuries from projecting bars is minimised
