 Research Project Summary

The research will be directed to find the involvement of parents in the career selection of
their children and how much they influence their choices to select a particular field
regardless their lack of interest. we are using both qualitatative like focus group
discussions and judgemental opinios and quantitative techniques like questionnaire to
collect the relevant data from 100 students belonging to UET, Allama Iqbal Medical
College, Kinnaird College , LUMS and Fast. The analysis tools which will be used to
quantify the results of the findings are Ms Excel and SPSS.

Keywords to use in our research are parental involvement, student motivation and
student careers.

Research Question and Significance:

How much the influence of parents is important in defining the careers of
their children?

Purpose of Study:
As the culture and social norm of Pakistan it is an advent phenomenon that
parents and family background has a strong and effective influence on the child
studies. Parents usually select the type of higher education their children will
take. Mostly parents influence and sometime force the child to become a doctor
or engineer. The interest of the students are normally neglected, also the
educational system gives a psychological superior edge to the medical and
engineering fields and hence the young students are motivated in a direction
away from the business schools. Business schools are not quite popular among
the students and their parents they are usually a second option. The study
embedded the point that the parents are a strong influence of carrier choice
among the students of Pakistan and hence they lure the students towards
parallel education other than business education without taking in account their
interests and in this way decreasing the probability of business minded students
and other high potential students to enter and study in business schools.
This study will reveal the facts about the education system and help the students
to choice the write direction and carriers according to their interests and also help
to pour in a good student input for business schools. The research objectives are
general context showing the goal setting of the students and parental
involvement but the interpretation of the objectives are in a sense that the goal
setting is the factor which determines the input of the business school.

1. Specific Aims:

1. What are impact and the influence of parents and family background on
the child education choice?

2. What are the chances of a student to study in a business school because

of his/her own choice?

3. Does education system play a negative role with respect to selection of

business schools by students?

4. How the parental influences effect the input of the business schools?

5. Is business schools priority of the students who are enrolled in one?

3. Methodology:
METHODOLOGY:

Research Design Overview:

The study will be conducted using a questionnaire survey filled by the students
belonging to different institutes of different fields. In this study Both quantitative
and qualitative methods will be used and evaluated on statistical software.
Method of Procedure:
The research type is a Descriptive Research and a sample of 500 Students
would be used for the research. The information intends to solve the problem of a
current issue hence the study intends to find the facts and logics that can be
used in future study also.
The information to be used in this research is taken from the primary and
secondary resources. Primary data is mainly consists of the questionnaire filed
by the students and secondary resources are the books and the published
articles. With all this for additional help interviews would be conducted with the
experts that would be the directors of the business schools selected for the
study.
Quantitative as well as Qualitative approach would be utilized in the research for
evaluation. The qualitative would majorly consist of the numerical data collected
as from the sample through questionnaire and qualitative approach would be
taken in consideration during the filling of the questionnaire by the researches in
by asking additional questions to the respondents and taking their view points
and personal experiences. The experts would also be involved in the qualitative
approach as opinions are taken to check the validity of the content and clear the
confusions.

Sampling:
The sample consists of the 500 students of the business and commerce
education providing department of university of the Punjab located in Lahore
Pakistan. The students would be currently studying in the departments. The
Target Population is students of university of the Punjab and sample population
consist of the 500 student of the following departments
• Institute of Business Administration
• Institute of Business and Information Technology
• Institute of Administration Sciences
• Hailey College of commerce
• Hailey College of Banking and Finance.
The departments should also have seats reserve for sports base, scholarship,
disability as to cover all the aspects and factors that influences education in
Pakistan.
Among these 100 students per department are the sample of that department
and are selected randomly taking in account that all the semesters are covered
thoroughly. The sampling is done on the convenient sampling approach so that
the researches may have an easy access to the departments in the case of any
misconception or misunderstanding.
The sample selected should be able to understand the purpose and concept of
the study and should fully comprehend the content of the questionnaire.

Data Collection Methods:

The major source of the primary information would be the data collected from the
questionnaire. Appendix contains a sample questionnaire. The questionnaire can
be amended after having discussion with the expertise. The questions contains
would refer to the background education, preferences of the students, parents
and family impact on the carrier choices, satisfaction, family education
background and most important their choice of business school and business
education. The question will focus on the impact of parents on the aims and
goals and carrier choices of the students and the impact of this influence on the
input of the business schools.
The data would be collected by the distribution of the questionnaire by voluntary
but capable researches independently to each sample unit (i.e. every
participating student). The researcher will also provide supervision to the
students
Variables:
These questions will relate the parent’s influence on the students on the one
side with their choice of business education on the other side. So the variables
are
Parents influence on students regarding choice of education
Student input of the business departments and schools.
Hypothesis:
The hypothesis designed is that
Parents influence the students to select his carrier and influence them
towards fields other than business education hence decreasing the number
of potential students in business schools.
The hypothesis is not a hard and fast rule and it is assumed phenomenon hence
it should not restrict the study but just provide a helping hand and leap in the
research.

Measures of Data Analysis:

The relationships as above are measured by using Lickert scale which measures
the qualitative attributes in quantitative numbers, it measures the degree to which
a person agrees or disagree with the question. The common range is from 1 to 5
The evaluation of the data collected is done by using computer software excel
and SPSS.
Hypothesis developed are thoroughly validated with the results drawn after the
assessment of the data, the results would contain tabular data, graphs and text
content
To evaluate the interviews conducted from the parents and experts; content
analysis would be used.
To evaluate the interviews of the participating students’ narrative analysis would
be used.

Ethics:
The research conducted would be conducted taking in all the ethical issues and
therefore questions inquired only addresses the educational background and
educational related questions of family trends. None of the questions will be
addressed that are against the social norms and cultural trends of the
participants. It is completely educational and would involve questions about study
patterns. To avoid irritation from the participant the researcher would introduce
the study and its purpose

Research Project Scheduling

Time Schedule:
The estimated time period of the study is 9 weeks in which the first four weeks
are allocated to the proposal writing and pre research requirements and after that
the next five weeks are given for field work and evaluation of the data and
printing and publishing of the results

 Research Design/General Methodological Approach

In this section, provide an overview of the research design, including a summary of the
methods of procedures and a justification for the approach

 Methods of Procedure

In this section be specific about the procedures that will be used in the study
1
 Sample Size and Description

 If the study encompasses survey research, include the type of sample, target and
expected number of survey respondents, the source of respondents, stratification
variables, etc.

 If case studies are proposed, provide number of cases, interviews per case, source
of respondents, number, type, and length of interviews within strata, etc. Describe
significant sampling characteristics (e.g. job titles/positions), location, types of
industries/organizations, methods of access, etc.

 Data Collection Methods

A questionnaire would be developed to analyse that how much students are more
under the parental inffluence in their career choice and if given a chance they
would opt for the different field which is most attracted to them as a career which
will eventually lead to self gratification and much higher output.
Focus group discussion with parents will be arranged to get a better viewpoint
from their perspective too. Judgemental opinion by the careere counselling
professionals will be obtained to deduce the impact of involvement of parents on
childern education and eventually on career choice.
4. Data Analysis Plan:

 Questionnaire will be analysed on SPSS and Ms Excel while focus

group discussions and judgemental opinions
