FEBRUARY 2011 QUEZON CITY, PHILI PPINES VOL. VI NO.

DAHHA and partners provide free medical, dental, diagnostic services and medicines to
1,662 patients from the neighborhood
The “Gamot Para sa Kapwa” medical/dental/diagnostic mission
held at the Don Antonio Heights covered court and elderly center
last February 12, 2011 drew a large crowd mostly coming from
depressed areas within Barangay Holy Spirit. The health mission
was a partnership project of DAHHA with SM Foundation Inc, the
Rotary Club of Holy Spirit, Greater Don Antonio Heights Senior
Citizens Association Inc (GDAHSCAI), and St Benedict Parish
Pastoral Council (SBPPC).
Vice Pres and OIC Dr Roger Belleza, dedicated and indefatigable
Chair of DAHHA’s Health & Sanitation Committee and a veteran of
medical missions, spearheaded this project. He ably led a team
of some 25 medical doctors who provided free consultation ser-
vices to 979 patients. Dr Roger who was not feeling very well
then, having come from a medical mission the previous day, stayed until the last patient had been served. Doctors from
the Quezon City Medical Society, Capitol Medical Center, Quezon City General Hospital, and the Philippine Children’s
Medical Center, as well as DAHHA member Dr Marilou Yap volunteered their services.
In addition to the accredited dentist of SM Foundation, four (4) dentists from the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit and sister club
Rotary Club of Marikina North were on hand to provide dental services to 254 patients. In particular, Dr Myeong Kim of
the RC Holy Spirit, a Korean, came with three (3) portable dental chairs and a complete array of dental tools and imple-
ments. Providing assistance to the dentists were members of the SBPPC and youth volunteers.
Another Rotarian, Dr Eui Bong Jung, a doctor of oriental medicine, administered acupuncture to 20 patients, some of
whom were initially scared to be needle-pricked, but the handsome, gentle acupuncturist put his patients at ease in no
time. Dr Bong’s first patient was Kgd Lydia Ballesteros who visited together with Kgd Jomar Lagarto.
The Quezon City Red Cross sent a stand-by ambulance with 5 paramedics in case of any emergency. QCRC also sent
5 nurses for taking vital signs and measurements. SMF provided all the needed medicines, medical supplies & equipment,
mobile x-ray and ECG van. The diagnostic services, which were mostly done at the GDAHSCAI elderly center benefited
the following: ECG-84, x-ray-155, RBS/FBS-102, urinalysis-47, cholesterol test-21. A lecture on nutrition was also given to
senior citizens at the elderly center, after which parlor games were played. DAHHA provided breakfast, snacks and lunch
to about 150 volunteers and organizers, thanks to Dr Belleza’s efforts in soliciting donations for food. Treasurer Violy Sal-
vador was on top of food distribution and made sure that all volunteers were served.
Coordinating the supply of logistical requirements of the mission was Secretary Marcia who also supervised the deploy-
ment of members of youth groups, Rotaract and Interact Clubs of Holy Spirit, to various service areas.
DAHHA conveys the community’s sincere appreciation to SM Foundation, to all the medical and dental practitio-
ners and to other groups who volunteered their services to make the health mission a resounding success!

A red Christmas celebration !

The holiday spirit was ablaze on December 12, 2010 as homeowners came in red for the traditional an-
nual Christmas party of the Association. VP and OIC Dr Roger Belleza welcomed the homeowners and
thanked fellow DAHHA directors for a fruitful year for the Association. Cong. Winnie Castelo graced the
occasion and reiterated his commitment to help DAHHA’s projects to the extent his representation can
afford. A lively dance number was presented by the aero-dance ladies of DAHHA. A wonderful rendi-
tion of Christmas carols was provided by Raymond Ancog. Raffle prizes donated by DAHHA directors
were given away. The major raffle prize, a 21” Sharp television set donated by Director Zeny Flores,
was won by My & Mrs Edmundo Guazon. Food was catered by Pepeton’s, and everyone enjoyed eat-
ing especially the sumptuous lechon donated by Director Abe Floro. Couples had fun and laughter
dancing the pasa doble led by dance instructors. The program was emceed by Secretary Marcia.
It was a truly enjoyable Christmas celebration and fellowship evening with neighbors and friends!

BEWARE OF COMPULSIVE OVEREATING

I saw this problem during Christmas and New Year celebrations and in restaurants all over Metro Ma-
nila. Compulsive overeating is a disorder characterized by gorging unusually large amounts of food on
a regular basis. It is a form of “addiction” wherein the person feels an uncontrollable compulsion or urge to binge on food
to the point of feeling sick.
The most obvious side effect of compulsive overeating is rapid weight gain that leads to obesity. Obesity is not just a prob-
lem that concerns physical appearance, it is a condition that brings with it increased risks of developing chronic diseases
like diabetes, arthritis, heart diseases and cancer, among others. Aside from the physical side effects of overeating, there
are emotional and social manifestations like having a low self-esteem, depression, and other social dysfunctions.
How to put an end to overeating? It is difficult to stop a habit, especially if it has deep rooted cause. For overeating, it is
advised that one consult a doctor. For DAHHA members, here are some suggestions on how to control your eating habits:
 Control your portions - This does not mean starving yourself. Put only one serving of each viand and side on your plate and eat
slowly. Another tip is to keep serving containers away from your plate to discourage you from helping yourself to seconds since you’ll
have to leave your table to do so. Another is to use smaller plates with less room for food.
 Avoid eating out – Most fast food restaurants offer meals that pack in thousands of calories per serving and only little nutritional value.
Instead of softdrinks, order a glass of water to cut down on your sugar intake. If a serving is too much, split a meal with your partner or
friend so that you will only eat a portion of the dish. If you’re eating alone, have the other portion taken out in a doggie bag.
 Drink lots of water – Sometimes you mistake thirst with hunger and end up eating instead of drinking. Drink a glass of water before
each meal to help you to eat less every time. Water not only keeps you full, it also helps speed up metabolism and cleanses your toxins
and waste.
 Eat less more frequently – Eat small portions every few hours to stop hunger pangs. You tend to eat more when you have starved
yourself for several hours. Snack on fruits and light crackers in between meals for nutrition yet low calorie fillers.
 Exercise when depressed – Do not eat when you get upset or angry, as this only gets you back into the vicious cycle of overeating and
getting depressed. Divert your anger or stress into more physical outlets like playing badminton or running.
It is very difficult to find the will power to stop a habit such as compulsive overeating, especially if you attempt to do this
alone. Seek the help from people who love you—like your family and friends. Ask them to help you by keeping temptation
away from you. Hang out with others more often and try to find a hobby that will keep you preoccupied. By keeping your-
self busy with other things, you’ll think less about food
