OPERATION CLEAR VISION, FREE EYE GLASSES FOR FAMILY MEMBERS E-6 AND BELOW
Operation Clear Vision was founded in 2004 as a way to express gratitude to our men and women in uniform, who make sacrifices every day to
keep our country free. We tried to find the best way to say “Thank You" for your service. Providing free eye ware to military families has been our
mission since the program's founding. Military families receive free vision examinations using their TriCare medical insurance. An allowance for
eyeglasses, however, is received only by the active military service member. Spouses and children must pay full price for their glasses. Opera-
tion Clear Vision was created to fill that need by providing spouses and children with free glasses. The program makes every effort to provide
lower pay-grade families with free glasses. E-6 and below qualifies a family for free glasses. If a family with a higher pay grade is still in need,
please fill out the application with an explanation of your situation.
First, go to your TriCare center and get a free eye exam. There are the eye doctors on base, Also, some of the Target, Walmart and Sam's club
locations are now accepting TriCare for eye-exams (glasses). Insure that you ask that they take TriCare and the eye exam (glasses) is at no cost
to you. Once you have your eyeglass prescription, please go to the Operation Clear Vision website and go to the "Application Form" page. Fill out
the online application, and hit the "Submit Form" button. Here is the website to download your Patient application:
http://www.operationclearvision.org/info/info.html
Once your application is approved, you will receive a voucher to take, with your written eyeglass prescription and military ID, to one of our two
dispensing locations. (The voucher is only valid for 60 days and may not be reapplied for). During the application process, you will be asked to
choose one of the following two dispensing locations:
Location 1: Ferris Optical, V.A. Medical Center La Jolla, 3350 La Jolla Village Dr., San Diego, CA 92122, (858) 552-8585 ext. 2963
Location 2. Lions Optometric Vision Clinic, 1805 Upas St. (Near Balboa Park), San Diego, CA 92103, (619) 298-5273

EFMP, DOD BENCHMARK STUDY (Please see flyer on pg 13)
The Exceptional Family Member Program would like to cordially invite you to participate in a benchmark study sponsored by the Department of Defense
(DOD) on June 8th & 9th 2011. This study will focus on the challenges faced by military families with special needs or those who serve as caregivers and
advocates for their exceptional family members. We are so excited and fortunate to be selected for Cornell University partnering with the University of
Kansas to conduct such a crucial study on determining the needs of our military families. This is an opportunity for your voice to be heard and poten-
tially impact care and services across the Marine Corps.
This study will be conducted under the auspices of Section 563 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which requires the DOD to establish a
policy to ensure that services are provided to families with special needs within the community. During the course of this study, a review of program
policies and a needs assessment will be administered. The needs assessment will afford military families the opportunity to express their opinions on
services, providers and those services in need of improvement. In order to collect information for this study, there will be small and large focus groups
conducted in accordance to Service Members rank structure and Levels of Needs (LON). Each group sessions will last for a period of one hour focusing
on experiences, concerns, and recommendations. Notes will be taken during each session excluding the use of recording devices.
Participation in this study is strictly voluntary but highly encouraged. Signing up to participate in this study does not forfeit your rights to withdraw at
any given time for any reason at your own free will. Cornell University will take all reasonable precautions to safeguard your privacy and maintain con-
fidentiality. Please note that reimbursement for childcare services will be reimbursed according to your assigned EFMP Respite Care rate and will not
impact approved (40) hours per month of respite care services. For questions or more information please contact Demetra Anderson, Exceptional
Family Member Program Manager at 858-577-8644.

The PTSD Coach smartphone application (app), launched in April by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense, has already
helped more than 5,000 users connect with important mental health information and resources. Since its launch, the PTSD Coach app has been
downloaded by thousands of individuals. While 96 percent of the users so far are located in the United States, the app has also been downloaded in 25
other countries. The app lets users track their PTSD symptoms, links them with public and personalized sources of support, provides accurate informa-
tion about PTSD, and teaches helpful strategies for managing PTSD symptoms on the go. Currently, the PTSD Coach app has received perfect customer
review scores on the iTunes App Store. Comments from Veterans and family members are overwhelmingly positive and one user describes the app as
"a must for every spouse who has a family member with PTSD." Professionals have sent positive reviews, suggestions and offers to collaborate on
research evaluating the PTSD Coach app. The app has also already proven to be a useful tool for the staff at the Veterans Crisis Line. Within the first
two hours of the app's official launch, the Crisis Line staff were contacted by a distressed Veteran who reported being instructed by the app to call the
crisis line and was subsequently given an appointment at the local VA medical center. Crisis Line staff have begun to regularly recommend this re-
source to callers. The app is one of the first in a series of jointly-designed resources by the VA National Center for PTSD and DoD's National Center for
Telehealth and Technology to help Servicemembers and Veterans manage their readjustment challenges and get anonymous assistance. Given the
popularity of mobile devices, VA and DoD hope to reach tens of thousands of Veterans, Servicemembers, and their family members with the new suite of
apps. Information on the PTSD Coach app is on the VA's National Center for PTSD Website: http://www.ptsd.va.gov/public/pages/PTSDCoach.asp
