OCPJ students experiences beauty of telecommunication system

Thursday, 29 July 2010, Student of Olympia College Petaling Jaya had an unforgettable
experience during an educational trip to Muzium Telekom, Kuala Lumpur. A total of 23 students
both local and foreign students from the school of Secretarial, Information technology and
Hospitality Management accompanies by two lecturers - Mr Conrad, the Academic Manager
cum IT School Coordinator and Ms Suga, the senior lecturer of the Secretarial School.

According to Mr Ben Chan, the Deputy Principal of PJ campus, “The objective of this visit is to
enhance the students understanding on the methods of communication used during the pre-
historic era till present in Malaysia.”

The Muzium Telekomunikasi Negara, is the first interactive museum in Malaysia. A visit to the
museum promises to be the most informative experience for the students. The student identified
chronological accounts of every milestone Malaysian telecommunications history achieved
supported by a wealth of artifacts from the respective eras and soundscapes.

The students was fascinated at the sounds of the 'Ketuk-Ketuk' in the early days used to
communicate to people. This “Ketuk-Ketuk” is made of wood and may sound in two different
tones which are warning and prayers. Then followed by the Morse Code in the 1870s in
Malaysia, the Museum experience took on an audio-visual journey through the history of the
early methods in relaying information.

The students enjoyed the reproductions of historical photographs and printed materials,
soundscapes and a wealth of artifacts as the Museum attempts to recreate the interesting and
often hidden, behind-the-scene stories of the pioneers of telecommunications that have helped
forge a nation.

Besides, a postal and telegraph office was set up to reinforce colonial administration throughout
the growing settlements and towns. The student enjoyed listening to the personal reminiscences
of those who, quite literally, cleared the path through the jungles and mountains to bring the lines
of telecommunications to outlying stations and villages.

Furthermore, the students identified the usage of fibre optic, telex machine and early
communication which gave a full version of their understanding in both studies and career.

Lastly, the students were invited to a fruit bazaar which was quite interesting and at same time
the students were able to try and learn the various types of local fruits.

Overall, the students experienced the artifacts which made the student turn back the time and
experienced the recollections and legacies of the early pioneers and extraordinary women
involved in helping build a modern nation. So for recreations of historical events, soundscapes,
artifacts and the most spectacular model of a Malaysian city, do come by the Muzium Telekom
and leave enriched.
