The rich young ruler has not really obeyed all the commands. He only thinks he has obeyed from his youth up. He was still in covetousness of riches, and that is what made him sorrowful. The Lord is not asking him to make a sacrifice, Christ was asking him to abandon all those cheap treasures so that he may pursue the real and greatest treasure, THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. The sacrifice referred to by SAMUEL, is the ceremonial sacrifice. He was not referring to personal sacrifices done in obedience to God. Even if SAUL, and any OT person, was able to comply with all the ceremonial things, but his heart is far from God, and therefore disobedient, then the CEREMONY OF THE SACRIFICIAL LAMB OR OX, which is supposed to look forward to Christ, and hence purify his soul, becomes an EVIL WORK, and unrighteousness, which is pungent in the nostrils of GOD.

We have studied GOOD WORKS already. We know therefore from the scriptures, that the deeds of unregenerate men, the non-elect, the people who have not been reconciled to GOD, are all worthless unrighteous acts of wickedness which, though men may praise, and even help us who believe, are actually filthy rags in the sight of GOD. We know also that true OBEDIENCE is a good work which God worketh in us, to do and to will of His good pleasure. Such acts are acceptable to God.

We can not say that OBEDIENCE to the commands of God is just as if a man has already rendered a ceremonial sacrifice unto God. These are separate ministries. What should have happened was, SAUL and his armies should have destroyed everything, in obedience to GOD, and then take of the LAMB AND OX from among the children of ISRAEL, and make a ceremonial sacrifice to GOD, and that would be pleasing in HIS SIGHT AND NOSE.

CORRECT. Obedience, faith, offerings, sacrifices are all part of the believer s life and none should be neglected.

When God says, He repents, in this case, it means He changes His dealing with Saul, from now on, He is no longer king and another will take his place. This doesn t mean that God was surprised or failed to know beforehand that Saul would not be a good king. God knows all things. This just gives justification to His actions in rejecting Saul and choosing David.
