Module Description and Objectives

This module allows students to apply and expand the skills obtained to this point in the program, namely the relationship between visual form and meaning and begin the process of integrating their growing skillsets. Students will have the opportunity to work on a project that integrates the various programs learned so far. Create a Design System: An assignment where the formal aspects of composition, form, color, symbolic drawing, craftsmanship, and processes of conceptualizing are investigated. Assignments are founded on specific goals and a sketching investigation to train the student in areas of selection, self-criticism, and visual logic. Example: Design a logo/corporate identity system that includes the reproduction of the identity/branding for printing limits (1-color, 4-color, etc.) and screen resolution; also include applications such as a 3-piece stationery system, brochure cover series, signage, expanded stationery system, etc. Example of a deliverable would be: final logo as .eps or .tif reproducable as a 1-color, 2-color, and 4-color process artwork; final logo as .gif or .jpg file; letterhead, #10 envelope, and business card format (suggested 6-up on a page) executed in either InDesign or Illustrator or

2. Create a Typographic System: An assignment expressing the principles of typography in a communication context. Deliverable would be packaged InDesign file including layout, all linked files (mechanically ready), fonts, and press ready pdf file. Student should have at the end of the module a full size comprehensive supplied in high-quality color printable paper folded and trimmed, compatible with student's individual portfolio. or 3. Create an Information System: An assignment emphasizing the understanding, structuring, and clear visual presentation of information-rich content such as: a series of maps depicting transportation systems or historical information; or a series of guides, diagrams, instructions, timelines, charts, graphs, or tables reflecting economic and environmental issues. Cover issues of information design including accessibility, transparency, credibility (using actual current data), quantity, density, and language independence. Example: Design a world map depicting human migration from 7 million bc to the 18th century ad. Compliment this information with the spread of major religions, dynasties and cultures, or economic impact. Deliverables would be final electronic files executed in Illustrator plus high-quality color printouts. or 4. Create a Poster Series Solving a Communications Problem: An assignment that emphasizes the understanding of visual relationships and how to use them to create visual impact and clarity while solving a communications problems such as promoting an exhibition, promoting a product or a line of products, communicating society's impact on the environment.
